Around SBN: Explaining Jeremy Lin's Early, Surprising Success

Via MLB Trade Rumors. It's reported to be a 2-year, $11 million deal, which is significantly lower than the 3 years, $30 million that Rodney was asking for. As with Brandon Lyon, the Tigers will get a sandwich pick between the first and second rounds.

hope the rally monkey enjoys rollercoasters!

Wonder how long til they come up with some sort of video illustrating that at the park.

After Fuentes and Rodney

The video of the Rally Monkey will be someone trying to talk it off a ledge.

Can monkeys have heart attacks?

by Rogo on Dec 23, 2009 5:48 PM EST reply actions

They have hearts. I don’t see why they couldn’t.

Just normally in the wild they would get eaten before they got old enough.

Do the Angels still play . . .

. . . in a ballpark next to Disneyland? Because if they do, you can see why they might want to sign a roller coaster . . .

by rea on Dec 23, 2009 6:22 PM EST reply actions

What Rodney Accomplished in 2009 . . .

. . . was to convince me that the Tigers don’t need to sign an experienced closer this year. I think they have several pitchers who, if handled carefully, could pull off a season as closer as effectively as Rodney did.

by rea on Dec 23, 2009 6:26 PM EST reply actions

And he is apparently NOT closing...

According to the Freep he will only be set up man for Brian Fuentes.
So I’m not sure exactly how Rodney sees this as better than his situation in Detroit. Does he just feel that the LAAAngels are a better chance to win a Championship or is there something else going on here?

by murrajo on Dec 23, 2009 6:43 PM EST reply actions

Well, yeah

There is no way the Tigers would have given Rodney 2 years at $11 million; there is no way they should have. I liked Rodney, despite occasional frustrations; he was a good relief pitcher, but he ain’t that special.

by rea on Dec 23, 2009 6:54 PM EST up reply actions

weird

word on the street elsewhere (I think MLBTR but I don’t have time to find the link right now) is that they want Fuentes to switch to setup man – that way his role changes, and they don’t have to pick up his expensive option. I could be wrong though. either way, rodney will be entertaining I’m sure

by allikazoo on Dec 23, 2009 7:31 PM EST up reply actions

hmm...

maybe that is LAA’s plan. Or perhaps they will do what Leyland did this spring and make them compete for it. I don’t know what Fuentes makes a year, but that would probably be an expensive pitch-off.

Good luck Mr. Rodney!

I will miss your sideways hat wearing, slow walk to the mound, the changeup, and embarrassing batters when they struck out against you in the Old English D. Merry Christmas!

Don't drive angry!

by Dan Gurney on Dec 23, 2009 7:15 PM EST reply actions

very true

But I won’t miss him walking the bases loaded before he decided to strike out the next three batters after going to a 3-2 count on each one.

Regardless, best of luck to him and I hope he pitches well in Anaheim.

We are so used to this after Frankie Rodriguez and Brian Fuentes.

Now with Rodney, the more heart attacks the merrier, and we are not a particularly young fanbase. Strapping yourself in Anaheim to watch Fuentes pitch is just business as usual to us.

Rodney suffered from Todd-Jones-itis...

In that, he can give up 3 hits or 3 walks in an inning yet still escape without allowing a run.

This afternoon I was reviewing box scores from April

Here are some memories…
April 22 2009
April 27 2009

Detroit won these, but it was Rodney’s ERA was 18.00 for these two games. And there was soooo much more to come!

by murrajo on Dec 23, 2009 9:18 PM EST up reply actions

ah, the memories

If it wasn’t a close game when Rodney entered, he made sure it was by the time he left. :)

Those poor, poor people.

good idea

They must be properly prepared for what they are about to encounter.

Did you tell them to always have as much booze as they think they might need to get through the game, and then double it?

PLEASE

can we still use that picture when there’s a closer meltdown with the caption “Rodney woulda got dis”? I love that picture more than the man himself (something about sarcasm vs acid reflux)

This from one of our local TV sportscasters here in Toledo:

“Tigers fans’ll tell you: Watching Rodney try to close a game was like drinking lemon juice after a hot dog eating contest.”

i literally have only a slight opinion on this...

Rodney did his job last year and really that’s all we could ask.

11 million though? Please….

I won’t lie … this almost bums me out more than Grandy leaving. That makes me weird as hell, but i’ll miss his crooked hat, how I thought he was going to gangsta lean on the mound, how he looked ready in case a knife fight broke out and — most of all — that filthy, filthy change-up.

He’s the present I loved because of how much anguish he put everyone through.

Thanks God

In the next year, quantities of heart attacks in Los Angeles will increase about 50%.

Another problem is … we don’t have:
- setup man
- 9th inning man
- lead-off hitter
- 3rd Start Pitcher with normal ERA and normal W-L percentage

by Grzesio on Dec 25, 2009 10:57 AM EST reply actions

So knowing how up and down Rodney is

The Tigers should be able to light him up when the play LA right? Right?

If the Angels

stick Fernando out there in a non-save situation….the possibilities are endless for us.
