Tigers Interested in Crosby?
Jason Beck is reporting that the Tigers have been in touch with former A's shortstop Bobby Crosby's agent, and interest appears mutual.
The way Beck describes it, it looks as though the Tigers are considering him as a fallback option if they don't re-sign Adam Everett.
Personally, I'd rather have Everett than Crosby (for multiple reasons, some rational, some irrational). But what do you guys think?

Ew.
He and Everett seem about even offensively, but Everett is far better defensively. Now that Boston has Scutaro, I would hope we can re-sign Everett.
Blergh
I’d rather go with Dlugach.

Agreed.
Considering the Tigers payroll, and the fact that Everett is probably the best shortstop currently available at a reasonable price, I wouldn’t mind seeing a Dlugach/Santiago platoon at short. Maybe play Santiago against righties and Dlugach against lefties? Seriously, I doubt that Dlugach could be worse offensively than Crosby/Greene/Counsell/Hairston. And in 258 PAs against righties last season, Razor Ramon OPSed .716. I could live with that.
Hmm
Does Razor have a very clear platoon split? If he does, that might be worth it. I still have hope for Dlugach as a fringy starter type…

Lefty/righty splits
Career: .251 against righties, .220 against lefties
2009: .267 against righties, .270 against lefties
(Granted, he has far fewer ABs against lefties)

Last season, I would have liked this
But after this season, I’ll take Everett.
I’m not on board with Dlugach though. Complete rookies up the middle? No thanks.

I would like to pass on Opie too
I watched him bobble tooooooo many balls out there. One that cost us a game when Seattle was in town.
Not much else out there at SS
Nick Green didn’t have a great year, Khalil Greene/Eric Bruntlett can’t hit the broad side of a barn, Orlando Cabrera will want more than the $4m he made this year, Craig Counsell/Chris Gomez should probably hang ‘em up, Jerry Hairston Jr. is a utility player and likely won’t be a good full-time player and Miguel Tejada is coming off his megacontract of 6 years/$72m and isn’t going to take an over 50% pay hit.
I know, I just went all gloom and doom. I think picking up Orlando Cabrera on a one-year contract would be absolutely amazing. I know we just scoffed (sort of) at Polly for around $5m a year but unlike Scott Sizemore, there is no one in waiting at short. We need to sign someone unless DD and Leyland are going to take a dive on Santiago. If they were going to do that, one would think they would have done it by now.

I did
I would rather switch up between the rookie and Ramon, I have more confidence in Ramon than Opie
Anecdotal evidence is not fact.
Everett was one of the better defensive shortstops and by continuing to believe that just because you remember his bobbles more than his regular, good plays, he is not a good shortstop is doing him a disservice – just like Raburn gets flak for when he makes a bad play (they are spectacular but not at all the norm for him).
Everett isn’t the best but he’s a good shortstop with his glove. There were many games “cost” by many people this year. Even if Everett makes the play you are thinking of in Seattle it is not a guarantee that we win. Changing A does not always lead to result B, no matter how our linear brains like to say otherwise.
agreed....
some of us are to hard on Opie.
I do support giving Santiago a chance at the SS job. Opie was our main starter last with 107 starts. Ramon had 73 starts between 2nd and SS. I really don’t think it’s a stretch to give Ramon around 100 starts. Plus his batting average has been fairly decent over his past 4 seasons with Detroit.
Give me one good reason why Santiago doesn’t deserve a shot at being an everyday SS besides us thinking he’s relegated to being a utility guy. Nobody ever really thought Gerald Laird could be an everyday catcher but look what he did for us this season? His average stayed at his norm but he also guided an amazing pitching staff while having an absolute gun of an arm.
If the options outside the organization aren’t that great looking, why don’t we give the inside options more of a chance? Maybe looking into more of a utility player is what we need to be doing right now.

If you want a utility player
DLUGACH.
Seriously, if it’s a problem with rookies up the middle that we have, give Ramon 90 or 100 PA and work Dlugach in. It’s cheap and gets the job done pretty well. I know I’m beating this horse to death, but if we really have budget problems…

only 90-100 PA?
that doesn’t work out to be alot of games. Might as well have Dlugach start.

lol...
I figured that’s what you meant. But I do agree with you, some of our issues can be solved with some internal pieces. I don’t particularly want both rookies starting together all the time, but some of the time is okay.

I don't know why I put "starting" in italics...
seemed like a good idea at the time. I was going for dramatic and failed.

Was that the game where Galarraga outpitched Felix Hernandez before Bobby Seay gave up a home run to Russell Branyan?
I remember the Branyan 2-run homer, but I don’t remember the other runner or how he got on base.

no
my bad, it was 2-1. Ichiro hit off of french straight into Opies glove and when he get’s on base, well that’s it
here’s the box.
But I still feel that Opie cost us that game. You can bad mouth me and say I am wrong but I will stick by that till the day I die. I just Don’t like Everett. I don’t think he’s a good fit here. Period.
Ah, I was thinking of the game the night before that one
And I think we all have players on the team that we just don’t care much for. I don’t like Freddy Dolsi and I wish he would just go away so they can’t call him up and try to use him in setup situations anymore.
by SabreRoseTiger on Dec 4, 2009 8:02 PM EST up reply actions
and I agree - about Dolsi
If I could choose any players I wanted to be on the 25 man roster, I think I’d pass on almost half of them. There are several proven young(er) players I wish we’d get our hands on.
I ain't mad at'cha.
I will say 3 hits is way more a reason the Tigers lost than an E6. At least you admit you have a bias.
I’ll criticize your reasoning and use of anecdotal observation if I feel it is wrong but I won’t call you names and such. That isn’t how I roll. We’re all fans of the same team here and it is never personal (unless you root for Alex “Purple Lips” Rodriguez, then I begin to wonder).
Uh
I’d blame a weak and anemic offense over an E6.

I base a lot of my analysis on a combination of numbers and observation...
…though I tend to lean toward observation a bit more heavily (and I’m not a big fan of sabremetrics, so the numbers I do use are usually traditional stats). But I do realize that this causes my perception of certain players to get skewed. I think Everett makes a lot of routine plays that a good shortstop should make (though his errors can be ill-timed), but he doesn’t make spectacular plays that often so no one really notices him. And the fact remains that he’s still a better defender than Bobby Crosby.
by SabreRoseTiger on Dec 4, 2009 7:49 PM EST up reply actions
Therein lies the rub.
Everett makes many plays that aren’t routine for an average shortstop seem routine. More range and steadier glove means less spectacular looking plays made.
I like the SABR stuff to show me where my personal observations are off base and wrong, that way I can step back and see more than just what I think is going on.
I will admit my biases: I hate closers, bunting and the name the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim. There are others but those are the ones that most readily come to mind.

that would be awesome
Patches for reducing hatred for despicable people.
One of my coworkers alone would be enough to set the company up nicely, as everyone – and I mean EVERYONE! – who has met him hates his stupid moronic self. HATE.

My irrational biases:
I am suspicious of left-handed hitting catchers, I find Joe Mauer to be perpetually uninteresting (Seriously…the dude practically bores me to tears), and I get really nervous anytime Leyland issues an intentional walk (unless it’s Interleague play and he’s trying to get to the pitcher)
by SabreRoseTiger on Dec 5, 2009 10:17 PM EST up reply actions
This is true
But with a limited budget and possible cheap in-house options in Razor and Dlugach that may be able to replicate his win totals, we’d be better suited going with the youth.

I’d rather have Opie than Bobby Crosby, too. He’s solid defensively and I like that in a shortstop. Especially if the Tigers are going to be breaking in a rookie at second, it would be nice to not only have a more veteran player at short, but also a player who has experience with the current team. No learning curve, so he can concentrate more on making the right plays for his new middle infielder.
