Tigers Need Room on 40-Man Roster: Who Goes Next?

On his Twitter feed earlier tonight, Jon Paul Morosi pointed out that the Tigers' 40-man roster was full before Tuesday's trade. So with Curtis Granderson and Edwin Jackson moving over to new teams, and Max Scherzer, Daniel Schlereth, Austin Jackson, and Phil Coke coming to Detroit, there are now 42 players on the roster.

A source told Morosi that Bobby Seay, Jeff Larish, and Dusty Ryan are now available. Seay seems like a candidate to be non-tendered, with all of the left-handed relievers that the Tigers now have. Ryan also could be expendable, with the signing of Robinzon Diaz. And Larish just doesn't seem to have a very high stock in the organization right now. There's no buzz about him, giving the impression that the team has given up on him.

The Tigers probably want to clear at least one spot before Thursday's Rule 5 Draft, unless they're just not interested in selecting any available players.

The implication from Morosi's report is that Detroit would like to deal off Seay, Larish, or Ryan in the remaining two days of the Winter Meetings. But as The Detroit Tigers Weblog points out, couldn't the team also release any players that could've been left unprotected three weeks ago, such as Dontrelle Willis or Don Kelly?

I know the smoke still hasn't cleared from the big trade, but it's becoming increasingly apparent that the Tigers probably aren't done making moves this week. So who could go? Who should go?

EDIT: It would probably be helpful to link to the Tigers' 40-man roster. Sorry about that.

Dusty Ryan should go...

Jeff Larish I’m still kinda fond of.

I like Ryan

However his services are no longer required. Don’t Mike Hessman this kid.

by john.kmiecik on Dec 8, 2009 11:43 PM EST up reply actions

He made three errors in one inning.

It had better be one hell of an emergency.

Not on an everyday basis though...

If Inge has to start the season on the DL, you’d need someone a bit more versed in the position (again, I’m not necessarily advocating Don Kelly)

I’m really hoping Inge does not get traded, because it’d alienate an even larger portion of the fanbase than Granderson and we wouldn’t get much in return.

Keep Larish.

Don Kelly is worthless. Dusty Ryan is never going to see the field, either.

Hrmm

Dolsi, Seay, Larish, Kelly find their way onto the trade block. Try to find an insurance 3B who doesn’t suck major amounts of ass. Or a low-level prospect. I’d also consider trading Ramon Santiago- we have a replacement in Brent Dlugach that would be cheaper.

"Dolsi on the trade block"

I like the sound of that.

Can Dlugach play third (not permanently—just a one-month stopgap in case Inge needs more time).

by SabreRoseTiger on Dec 8, 2009 11:45 PM EST up reply actions

Probably

He’s a natural SS, but the transition can’t be too hard. I’d prefer we acquire somebody like Willy Aybar… maybe for Bobby Seay and Freddy Dolsi. Worst case, we can always shove Ramon at 3B.

Santiago . . .

doesn’t really have the throwing arm to play 3rd

One last negative post, then I'll try to get ahold of myself.

2010 Tigers Marketing Slogan:

Who’s Your Tiger? Seriously! Who is He?

No Centerfielder(with major league experience). No Closer. No Second Baseman (with major league experience). No problem!

I’ve reached the stage where I have to make fun of the situation. It will pass.

by rook34 on Dec 9, 2009 12:07 AM EST reply actions

So how do you get major leaguers if you don't want players with major league experience?

Can you not see how mutually exclusive that stand point is at its base?

As far as closers go: overvalued and overrated; can be replaced in system for much cheaper than buying a closer not named Mariano Rivera or Joe Nathan.

by 13194013 on Dec 9, 2009 2:10 AM EST up reply actions

of course i can.

Patience is not one of my virtues. Our history with prospects, even the can’t miss variety, hasn’t been good, with a few very recent exceptions. That is the basis of my reluctance to rely upon them.

by rook34 on Dec 9, 2009 7:34 AM EST via mobile up reply actions

Seriously

Why does everyone hate prospects? Like there’s less risk in signing Orlando Hudson for 4 years and God knows how much money as compared to using a kid who can clearly hit the ball.

ML experience is easy to learn- you play in the major leagues. No sense in us paying a premium for it, especially when it may not matter.

by David Tokarz on Dec 9, 2009 3:17 AM EST up reply actions

In a sense, we DID pay a premium for prospects

It’s still yet to be seen whether that price was worth it. Ideally, I don’t mind having 2 or 3 rookies on the pitching staff (unless they’re all in the rotation, which would be excessive), but I’d like the position players to be brought up and baptized one at a time so that the growing pains don’t hamper the team’s contention progress too much.

by SabreRoseTiger on Dec 9, 2009 6:28 AM EST up reply actions

my problem with prospects at this moment

is that they are prospects for down the line. The Tigers coulda shoulda won the division this year, and in the Central, would likely have stayed in contention with Granderson and EJax in place. Now? The 2010 forecast is up in the air, and with big changes coming in terms of contracts and salaries thereafter, who knows what will happen when the propects get to the bigs.

The biggest thing, though, is as fans, people naturally want to win now, and trading away known commodities for who knows what return down the line cuts against that instinct.

There will be

lots of empty seats at the CoPa next season.

by Detroitchik on Dec 9, 2009 11:29 AM EST up reply actions

Not really

Sizemore is ready now, Avila is arguably ready now, Scherzer isn’t a prospect, Scherleith is probably ready now, Coke is definitely ready now and A-Jax could do in a pinch (though he could use another year at AAA). Casper Wells is probably ready now.

I still think we have a shot at contention provided we can flip some bad contracts away.

President, Vice President and Secretary of the Casey Crosby Fanclub.

by David Tokarz on Dec 9, 2009 11:38 AM EST up reply actions

there was a drop off last year because people

could not afford tix. I went to a lot of games and had my choice of seating all season. I am telling you both Grandy and Polly were big crowd draws. You are missing 2 of your star players in the line up. Tigers will be hard pressed selling out because of that. It doesn’t matter if all of these guys are ready. Many people go to baseball games just so they can see a player the like or they’ve heard of.

by Detroitchik on Dec 9, 2009 12:35 PM EST up reply actions

Dusty Ryan

This is the last year of Inge’s contract, and if Larish still has any hope of playing third base, they need to hang onto him and groom him to maybe take over in 2011 (not saying I like that option, but still).

by ThaWalrus9 on Dec 9, 2009 6:54 AM EST reply actions

Seay . . .

. . . was a useful, if imperfect, player last year. You’d think they could get something for him in trade—not necessarily anything wonderful, but at least a minor league arm.

by rea on Dec 9, 2009 10:12 AM EST reply actions

If we get a minor league arm, please let it be a SP

We’re gonna have relievers coming out of our ears in about a year or two

by SabreRoseTiger on Dec 9, 2009 10:16 AM EST up reply actions

If it's another reliever

I may just snap. More.

Seay

I just hope we shoot for a trade and don’t just cut people. I think Dusty has shown true flashes of potential, and Seay could be especially valueable given our potential loss of Rodney and Lyon.
I could see Seay (!) as a possible 2010 closer candidate if we don’t grab someone off the market. Otherwise it’d be who? Schlereth? Perry? Zumaya?

A lifelong Tigers fan

by ewild on Dec 9, 2009 10:23 AM EST reply actions

Schlereth

Him, Coke or Zumaya. Hell, closer-by-committee. We’ve got enough live arms.

by David Tokarz on Dec 9, 2009 10:39 AM EST up reply actions

Coke . . .

Was a starter in the minors, although the Yankees used him out of the bullpen last year. Why not consider him as a candidate for the rotation?

by rea on Dec 9, 2009 11:22 AM EST reply actions

2 pitches

And stuff plays better out of the bullpen.

President, Vice President and Secretary of the Casey Crosby Fanclub.

I think it's fairely odvious...

dTrains @ the top, I’ll just bet he’s having some “anxiety” attacks about now. Bondo & Rob-us-son can easily go. & w/ Mags odvious power-loss & decline the entire 1st 1/2 of the season, it’s hard to believe he’s worth $18mil, the really hard part is pawning off their contracts on some one else. But, I gotta think as a whole or whatever they’d be worth a solid SS. I gotta think the next move’s definately for an Infielder. Though I could see Carlos back @ 3rd, Santiago or maybe even Inge, gotta see what’s up with the knees, or Sizemore. I know I’d feel alot more warm & fuzz if they solidified the Infield, with some one who doesn’t pop-out or Strike out almost every at bat.

by Ian Casselberry on Dec 9, 2009 12:16 PM EST up reply actions

wait...we re-signed opie?

What else have I missed in the grandy trade blizzard???

When did that happen, anyway (off to peruse the front page a little more carefully!)
