"Only way a Sizemore is going to lead off for us is if we trade for Grady Sizemore."
-- Jim Leyland, when asked if Scott Sizemore could bat leadoff.

You’re right Jim, why put a guy with a career minor league OBP of .383 and a 2009 SB% of 84% in the leadoff spot when you could just plug in your new CF with a career minor league OBP of .356. So much less work on the new lineup cards!
I’m officially sick of this guy. He needs to be put out to pasture.
Who said he was gonna have Austin Jackson lead off?

Nice Mac
Yeah, JL relies too much on instinct and not enough on real concrete #s

Well, clearly he knows what he's doing enough to be an MLB mgr
But making the statement that he relies on instinct more then numbers is completely factual; it’s well known that he rarely plays the numbers and loves to play hunches, as he’ll be the first to admit when he does.
The numbers don’t lie, as Mac posted, but clearly Leyland feels regardless of numbers, it takes a certain kind of player to bat leadoff and Sizemore doesn’t fit the bill in his eyes. To me though, it sounds like he at least deserves the chance in spring training to see what he can do.

And then he says this
“Certainly, we wanted Polanco back,” Leyland said. “We’re talking about a guy who had almost 600 hits in three years. Now, we’re going to play a rookie at second base. If you think that you’re going to get Scott Sizemore to beat Polanco in his first season, that’s not going to happen.”
Way to make Sizemore feel welcome, Jim. Take him out of the leadoff spot before spring traning even starts and then basically say “these stupid rookies, they can’t play like 34 year old veterans!”
My 2 cents?
Sizemore’s gonna make Jimmy look stupid……….

On the other hand...
Leyland’s pulled this sort of thing before. Remember early April 2008? It was in Chicago and Guillen had some sort of injury. Leyland put Cabrera at first base and adamantly declared it was a one-time thing and that was the end of it. Three weeks later, Miggy made the switch to first base permanently (a switch that has worked out well, I might add).
Is it a form of reverse psychology? I don’t know. But sometimes, when Leyland vehemently denies something in regard to positions, the lineup, or playing time, the opposite ends up happening.

that...
or Jim has no problem admitting he was wrong.

They can't.
I don’t know what sport you’re watching, but it’s not every day that a rookie suddenly sprouts up and takes a veteran’s place perfectly. A Gold Glove veteran. An impossible-to-strike out veteran.
Whatever though, you’re right. Leyland is clueless out there. You should call those guys over at 97.1, they’ll love you.

That's why I don't listen to call-in shows or read comments on Freep/DetNews/MLive/Facebook/MLB Trade Rumors
90% of the comments on those sites are completely absurd and tend to annoy me. BYB is so much better because most of the commenters here are a lot more capable of constructing solid arguments (whether I agree or disagree), not to mention utilization of proper grammar and spelling. And for the most part, everyone’s polite to one another.

Hey now, minus the sarcasm
you’re completely right, but so is Mac. And Sabre makes a perfect point about Leyland saying one thing and doing another, which is one of my biggest pet peeves with him. As a Psychology major myself, I can tell you that it’s not reverse psychology, he’s just a shoot first, ask questions later kind of guy. He acts on instinct and sometimes later pays for it. That all said, he’s a proven winner and has a WS so clearly he does enough right.
Sizemore will do a nice job, not perfect, but a nice job replacing Polly. Leyland though should watch how he says what he says. It kind of reminds me of “Miracle” where Kurt Russel tells the boys if they want a friend, he’s not the one to come to. The only problem is, we all know Leyland isn’t that hard on guys because we’ve seen them “coughSheffieldcoughGuillencough” just say whatever the hell they want to and in return he just gives in to their demands.
Maybe Jimmy was just upset over the Grandy trade and those comments were out of spite. I don’t mind him challenging Sizemore to be better than Polly but when it comes to the leadoff thought, he needs to be more open. With the stats Sizemore had, he’d be a better leadoff hitter than Jackson, IMO.

Tigers in on Grady Sizemore?
Jim showing the Tigers hand a little bit, but good play by Dombrowski…
I root for the Tigers, Pistons, Red Wings and yes, the Lions.

Yeah, so I read that and laughed and the comment below this is “well nuts” so I just burst out laughing more than I probably should.
And now at Beyond the Boxscore and Project Prospect!
I knew that was not going to happen.
When Rayburn plays, he’ll be leading off. Other than that…. who knows
If we can't have Grandy, I suppose Grady might work as a replacement
quick, go plant a rumor at an Indians’ blog, and see how much more hair they have left to pull out…

JJ Putz to the Sox? Get read to see Michgan's golden boy face us a lot (via MLB Trade Rumors)
Yesterday Joe Cowley of the Chicago Sun-Times said the White Sox were closing in on a deal with free agent reliever J.J. Putz, perhaps encouraging Putz’s friend Matt Thornton to leverage their bromance as a recruiting tool. Today, Williams implied that leaks of the team’s interest affected the possible deal. Cowley thinks they’ll still get it done:
The Sox might have to up the ante a bit, but Putz wants to pitch on the South Side and there is still a deal close to happening.
I don't think I have ever called for Leyland to be fired
but I think DD needs to sit down with him and explain the direction this team is going in. No more Pudge, Shef, Polanco and eventually no more Maggs or Gullien. The team is going younger and I know Jim struggled with that in Pittsburgh and Colorado. If Leyland is not on board with the youth movement going on then I would be in favor of shopping for a new manager next off-season. I don’t know if Sizemore is the answer at lead off but I don’t think anyone should be written off at this point either. Maybe Jim was trying to be funny but that statement by itself tells me he does not have a solid grip on the situation.
I can't believe I ate the whole thing!

I thought trading Granderson was impossible
It would be sweet if DD managed to one-up himself and pull Grady Sizemore from a division rival.
