Spring Game Thread: Cardinals at Tigers

Todd Wellemeyer vs. Zach Miner, 1:05 p.m. EST

Our long television drought is over as the Tigers make their Spring Training debut on FOX Sports Detroit this afternoon.  (And if you can't watch this afternoon's telecast - or listen to it, as it won't be on radio - FSN will replay it tonight at 7 p.m.)

Zach Miner gets his latest chance to prove he should be the Tigers' fifth starter, and should have three innings to show his stuff.  Other pitchers scheduled to see action include Brandon Lyon, Bobby Seay, Freddy Dolsi, and Ryan Perry.

I'm a little bit bummed that Wilkin Ramirez isn't in the lineup today, as I was hoping to see him play.  But maybe he needs a breather after going 3-for-4 yesterday.  And I guess Timo Perez needs some at-bats, too.

After the game, switch over to MLB Network (which is also televising the game, but will probably be blacked out locally) for a look at Comerica Park on "Cathedrals of the Game."

He's taking time away from Rod!

Actually, I kind of like the Cards’ perspective. Or I would, if this wasn’t the first time the Tigers were on TV.

whats the over under

on the total amount of times they metion that leyland and larussa are “real good friends”? There already at 2, my guess is about 12 times

They’ve puttered out on it, but I’ll put the O/U at 5.5.

TIMO TIME!

Solo homer to left. Tigers on the board. (Down 4-1, however.)

Sheff working on his base running? He had a pretty big lead when they tried the putout, and he had a big one when Larish just cranked that to right.

all that praise from rod about sheff being the tigers best baserunner……..

by HavocRox on Mar 16, 2009 1:30 PM EDT reply actions

Best base runner? I missed that comment, I was on the balcony having a smoke and only caught half the comments. Rod appears to have forgotten about Granderson.

Holy...

Did you guys see that Arby’s commercial with the guy greasing his hair with a burger? I think I’m going to be sick.

by Ian Casselberry on Mar 16, 2009 1:33 PM EDT reply actions

No, I saw the “Let It Shine” commercial. Wasn’t paying much attention though.

And THAT’S why Polanco is my Tiger.

Clevand

Wants a big league job

by ashmark on Mar 16, 2009 1:47 PM EDT reply actions

I think the Tigs should give it to him. As Mario mentioned, someone else will most likely grab him if we try and send him down. He played with us a bit last year and wasn’t overly impressive but from the lines I’ve seen during spring training, he’s really gunning for it.

by john.kmiecik on Mar 16, 2009 1:49 PM EDT up reply actions

I agree. Plus they need a reserve center fielder and he plays center field.

by ashmark on Mar 16, 2009 1:50 PM EDT up reply actions

They mentioned Larish playing CF earlier in the broadcast, I don’t like that idea. While Rod is right that good instinct makes a CF, speed is a huge factor in being able to implement those instincts. That’s why guys like Granderson and Sizemore are stud CFs.

Miner

must want to be in the bullpen even though he says he wants to start.

by ashmark on Mar 16, 2009 1:52 PM EDT reply actions

Yeah, every other start from him has been complete crap. That might fly for the Nats, but not here.

by john.kmiecik on Mar 16, 2009 1:57 PM EDT up reply actions

after a shaky first inning, he looked solid the rest of the way

by HavocRox on Mar 16, 2009 1:57 PM EDT up reply actions

Jeremy Bonderman syndrome.

by john.kmiecik on Mar 16, 2009 1:58 PM EDT up reply actions

i was thinking the same thing

by HavocRox on Mar 16, 2009 1:59 PM EDT up reply actions

My friends and I joked that we should have been starting Todd Jones, then bring out Bondo in the 2nd.

Looking back, I still think that would have been a better decision.

Hit the 1B right in the glove!

Great play though by the Cards fielding.

by john.kmiecik on Mar 16, 2009 2:01 PM EDT reply actions

wow timo is on fire today

by HavocRox on Mar 16, 2009 2:02 PM EDT reply actions

TIMO TIME!

Clevlen has to fight off Timo. A single and a double away from the cycle!

by Ian Casselberry on Mar 16, 2009 2:03 PM EDT reply actions

Wouldn’t be such a bad thing to see, I suppose. Can Timo play CF well?

by john.kmiecik on Mar 16, 2009 2:06 PM EDT up reply actions

65 pitches for miner through 3???? ouch

by HavocRox on Mar 16, 2009 2:05 PM EDT reply actions

Rod

got excited on that play!

by ashmark on Mar 16, 2009 2:32 PM EDT reply actions

Nice ending to the first televised game.
