BYB on 'The Benchwarmers'

"The Benchwarmers" gave me the thumbs-up on posting some audio from last night's show, so here's a clip of my appearance on Toledo's WSPD (1370-AM).

The second hour of the show was their "Spring Training Spectacular," and we discussed how the team is looking so far, what important competitions remain (especially among the pitching staff), and whether or not some players can rebound this season.  (Adam Van Arsdale from Let's Go Tribe was on later to discuss the Indians' chances in 2009.)

Thanks to Jim Kushlan for inviting me onto the show, especially while the Toledo area was under a tornado warning.  Somehow, the idea of people listening to some baseball talk while seeking shelter in their basement isn't entirely comforting.

You can listen to an embedded audio clip below or download the file from the accompanying link.

Great job overall, Ian

but you made the closer’s role seem so “matter of fact.” You really think it’s Lyon’s to lose right now? You probably know more about it than I do, but I didn’t realize he was brought in with the assumption he would be closing. I thought he was going to have to win it—same chance as the other guys. Based off of performances thus far, I’d say he’s at the bottom of the totem poll, but I’d like to say that Rodney, Lyon, and Zumaya (barring injury) are all on par with one another thus far. I wouldn’t be surprised if Perry gets a peek. If it’s Lyon’s to lose, it seems to me like we’re going to have another Todd Jonesy/controversy on our hands. Everything else you said, I felt was right on and I completely agreed with. Good job

Thanks for listening

Yeah, you might be right about the closer’s competition. Going into Spring Training, I thought it was Lyon’s job to lose. But Kurt from Mack Avenue Tigers pointed out to me last night how well Rodney was pitching, which could imply that he’s fighting to win that job.

However, I still have a hard time thinking Zumaya’s in the mix until he checks out fully healthy. And if not, Perry might be ready to step into that role.

ooh a namedrop

I listened to! I think you’re right that Zumaya isn’t even in the running and I feel like it’s Lyon’s to lose, because the Tigers saw Rodney in the closer’s role last year and it didn’t really turn out very good. But i’m confident it’s a competition. I think they’re going to look for something more out of Rodney than just showing up, which is maybe all Lyon has to do. I don’t know what they’ll be looking for, though one has to think throwing strikes and not walking people are high on that list.
