The Reflective Gary Sheffield
Gary Sheffield recently talked to Yahoo! Sports' Jeff Passan about a conversation he had with former major leaguer Ryan Thompson about being out of the game:
"I always ask guys what that feeling’s like, not to have to get up and go to work, and not having to go and play baseball," Sheffield said. "He was stunned the first couple years. This is what you’ve done all your life, and now you’re not doing it. I’ll probably go through that phase a little bit. Eventually, you get over it."

Reflective Me on the Reflective Gary
The fact that he’s been “asking around” in his life regarding this subject is telling. It’s as if it’s going into dangerous territory emotionally (not playing) and it’s something that he may have been concerned about in general, what he would be “without a girlfriend” after living for her so long. I think he’s hating it, the thought of it coming.

Excellent observation
Of course, its crossed his mind, but I think he really hates to think about it. It’s been his whole life. The one good thing he has going for him is his family. He finally found true love with his wife and has 6 children….two in their twenties, a son in his early teens and 3 little boys under the age of 5 with his wife. He appears to be very devoted to his family so I hope he can find some sort of career maybe in baseball or just as a public speaker. It’s a hard thing for some of those guys to accept. As a woman over 50, Gary is just now hearing all the “how old he is remarks”. That’s kinda the age when men go thru the “change”. I’m hoping he can accept it gracefully.
