Game 7: Rangers at Tigers
Texas Rangers at Detroit Tigers, Apr 12, 2009 1:05 PM EDT
Kevin Millwood (1-0, 1.29) vs.
Edwin Jackson (1-0, 1.23), 1:05 p.m. EST
I hesitate to say what the Tigers could do with a win today, for fear of invoking the jinx, but you know what I'm talking about. Rhymes with "leap"?
Edwin Jackson was flat-out robbed on Tuesday night, after pitching one of the best games we've seen from a Tigers starting pitcher in quite a while. Hopefully, the bullpen does a better job of supporting him today. Jackson faced the Rangers once last season, holding them to one run and five hits in six innings at The Ballpark in Arlington.
Kevin Millwood also started off his season strong, holding the Indians to one run and five hits over seven innings in the Rangers' home opener. In two starts against the Tigers last season, he went 1-0 with a 2.81 ERA,. However, he wasn't great on the road last year, posting a 5.05 ERA in 16 starts.
No matter what happens today, I think I'll miss seeing Elvis Andrus and Josh Hamilton wear those downflap hats. (Are those available to the public yet? Our ears get cold, too.)

One nice thing about six straight day games...
Leyland’s not doing that “day game after a night game” thing, and resting some regulars.

Will have to wait to later to watch...Easter with the In-laws
Get Millwood’s pitch count up and attack the Ranger bullpen, and let Mr Jackson work his mojo

Apparently...
Josh Hamilton likes this particular day game. He crushed that ball.

Crowd
Looks very sparse. I remember going to an Easter Sunday game after church a few years ago (although it’s arguable that baseball/comerica is my real church) and we were able to walk up to the netting behind home plate and sit down with no problems. I hope the Tigers don’t expect to feed off the crowd today….
pitching?
The way the Tigers have been blasting away at Texas all weekend, I’m sure the Tigers can put up a couple of runs, but will the pitching keep Texas under 20?
I gotta get a kid
So I can run on the field before or after a game. Or use him or her to score a handshake with a Tiger.
Maybe I start recruiting an honorary stand-in kid for BYB this season.

I got out there....
with my nephew last season. But they were pretty adamant about letting me nowhere near the diamond and had to wait behind home plate. Still great to be down there, though.
No adults on the field?
Well, then #@$% that.
To those kids that have already applied to be the honorary BYB stand-in kid, your services are no longer required.

Oh, boy...
Ian Kinsler with a two-run homer. This definitely won’t be Edwin Jackson’s day.

Nice job by Guillen
Running into the left field gap to catch a ball near the fence by Hamilton.
(It sounded like Hamilton was going to have his second homer of the day, judging by the crack of the bat.)

Sorry everyone
If this game doesn’t turn around, it’ll be on me. The Tigers are 0-2 in games I’ve been able to watch, and 3-1 in games I haven’t seen.
This just might not be their day
Polanco looked safe on that play at second.

Millwood is just starting to mow hitters down
Do the Tigers’ hitters have an Easter dinner to attend?

dinner?
they’re aiming for easter lunch

All right
Top of the order coming up. Tigers need to get something going here.

Jackson
minus the 2 difference maker mistakes, is turning in another fine outing in my book. Verlander plummets after those two bombs. Jackson meanwhile has done a great job of minimizing the damage
totally agree
Edwin occasionally struggles with control, so it was unfortunate that there were runners on base for both homers, but I really don’t feel like Jackson has pitched badly.
and if not
you can get a little tidying up done between innings! win-win!

In non-Tigers matters...
flipped to the Masters to prepare for my upcoming nap. There’s a dude wearing purple pants and a purple checked shirt. I hope he wins just to see how the green jacket looks with that getup.
Yeah, just the outing he needed.
Can’t help but wonder if Jackson was thinking, “Well, he can’t blow this one.”

OT
Phil Mickelson is playing out of his mind right now… he’s stealing all of Tiger’s magic playing with him. Don’t call it a comeback.
tough lip out
on the birdie putt for Tiger. Not a good day for athletes with the word Tiger in their name.
Wake up!
Inge goes opposite field for a homer!

That puts him on pace for 93 this year.
I love doing early season pace calculations.

I think we're seeing
why Texas isn’t as serious threat to win the West despite having some scary bats
Yep
the bullpen sucks real bad.

Man oh man
I was ready to be pissed at Guillen for swinging at those low pitches.
by Ian Casselberry on Apr 12, 2009 3:19 PM EDT up reply actions
Not just for this game...
But this is big, because if Guillen wasn’t going to start hitting, Cabrera was going to see himself walked to first base a lot more often.

fingers crossed its mostly a precautionary thing. It IS cold out there today.

Yes, Glass Joel
Currently holds the trophy.
Maybe we have to call Guillen “Creaky Carlos,” or something like that.
by Ian Casselberry on Apr 12, 2009 3:24 PM EDT up reply actions
What'd Guillen do?
Did he walk off on his own?
by TennesseeYooper on Apr 12, 2009 3:22 PM EDT reply actions
I wouldn't swing at a thing Madrigal throws
After the game he had on Friday, they’re making him load the bases?
by Ian Casselberry on Apr 12, 2009 3:23 PM EDT reply actions
DAMMIT
Laird let Madrigal off the hook there.

Five-tool player!
Nice barehand pick up and throw by Inge!
by Ian Casselberry on Apr 12, 2009 3:30 PM EDT reply actions
Perhaps there is something to
Inge playing third after all. A lot of guys give themselves a hernia making that play.
Is it an exaggeration to say...
There’s no way they win this game last year?
by Ian Casselberry on Apr 12, 2009 3:33 PM EDT reply actions
The best part is that the rally started with the bottom half of the order.
Which is supposed to be where we are going fall off in production this year.

Great team win!
Loved every second of it!
"It's designed to break your heart. The game begins in the spring, when everything is new again, and it blossoms in the summer, filling the afternoons and evenings, and then as soon as the chill rains come, it stops, and leaves you to face the fall alone". A. Bartlett Giamatti
Let's not forget
The nice work done by Edwin Jackson. He wasn’t as sharp as his first outing, but he really battled and kept the Tigers in it.
And you are off the hook
Free to keep watching, sir.

2 days in a row
Bullpen gets the job done. I’m fully expecting some X-Files shenanigans to start happening, this is just creepy.
year to year
bullpens can be very volatile. 2006 Indians bullpen was a trainwreck, 2007 it was one of the best in the league.
Good starting pitching (like Jackson gutting it out for 6 innings) can help shield a bullpen.
Jackson
Got the win he should have gotten Toronto!

that’s a pretty sweet win, no two ways about it…saved it all for the last at bats, and Rodney shutting ’em down 1-2-3 for the second straight day….
Is it safe to say Brandon Lyon isn’t getting his closer’s job back any time soon?
I sure hope so
I don’t really care who it is, I just want the closer to inspire a little confidence. We all know Rodney has great stuff, hopefully he can keep things going.
RODNEY!!!!!
…..WILL BE THE CLLOSER FOR 162 GAMES THIS YEAR!!!!!! GO TIGS!!!!
