UPDATE:  Today's game has been postponed, due to rain.  Doesn't that seem appropriate, in the wake of Mark Fidrych's passing?  No word yet on a make-up date.

  John Danks (0-0, 0.00) vs.   Rick Porcello (0-1, 7.20), 1:05 p.m. EST

The weather situation's looking a bit shaky in Detroit, but the latest forecast seems to indicate that the rain might hit late in the afternoon, so the Tigers and White Sox should be able to get this game in.  If the game gets rained out, however, it'll be interesting to see what the Tigers decide to do with Rick Porcello.  Do they skip his turn in the rotation or push him back a day?

Honestly, I'm a bit nervous about Porcello facing the White Sox, as we're all too familiar with how their lineup can crush Tigers pitching.  (Not to mention the crappy weather.)  But if the kid manages to pitch well against the same batters that demolished Zach Miner yesterday, that would obviously help his case for staying in the rotation once Jeremy Bonderman rejoins the team.

In his first start of the season, John Danks shut out the Royals over six innings, allowing just three singles.  Against the Tigers last season, Danks had a 2-0 and 2.41 ERA in three starts.

Gerald Laird and Adam Everett are both back in the lineup, after getting a day off yesterday.  And Marcus Thames is today's left fielder, with Carlos Guillen again starting at designated hitter.

And I forgot to mention for yesterday's series opener that South Side Sox has your SB Nation opposing view.

This is the lineup I like to see

It looks much more impressive with all the regulars (and Thames) there, with the only exception being Santiago instead of Everett.

Danks looked great

last week against the Royals. I’m anxious to see how Porcello fares with a little more room to spray fly balls out there.

Anyone know if the Tigers are doing anything to memorialize the Bird on the unis or field today (or all season?)

Saw the replays of Dye and Konerko’s back to back 300ths bombs, and I couldn’t help but blame Juan Gonzalez a little bit….both of them snuck over the wall in left center, and just a few years ago would have either been long outs (Dye’s shot), or solid doubles (in Konerko’s case)….

I hate things like that

Cancel it or gimme a time! How’m I supposed to plan around something so open ended? lol

Weather forecast made it look like more rain was coming in later.

Of course, I hope the Tigers are doing a bit more than watching The Weather Channel…

Does that mean

I have to go back to work?

I'll echo a BYB tweet.

While the game should not have been canceled due to Fidrych’s death, it seems fitting that the game was rained out, as if some higher power didn’t quite want things to go back to business as usual just yet.

Armando pitching tomorrow

"It's designed to break your heart. The game begins in the spring, when everything is new again, and it blossoms in the summer, filling the afternoons and evenings, and then as soon as the chill rains come, it stops, and leaves you to face the fall alone". A. Bartlett Giamatti

usage police

Ian, “in lieu of” means “in place of,” not “in light of.” Sorry for that. Just wanted to let you know.
