Game 14: Tigers at Angels

Detroit Tigers at Los Angeles Angels, Apr 22, 2009 10:05 PM EDT

  Justin Verlander (0-2, 7.88) vs.   Joe Saunders (2-1, 2.18), 10:05 p.m. EST

After an outing in which he pitched into the eighth inning, looking great except for an awful fifth inning, Justin Verlander tries once again to show that he's better than his record and ERA show.  It would be extremely encouraging to see him build on what looked like something of a breakthrough and return to form on Friday night.

Verlander has an 0-2 record and 4.84 ERA in three career starts against the Angels.  This will be the first time he's pitched in Anaheim.

Joe Saunders has pitched well in two of his three starts this season, giving the Angels the closest thing they have to an ace among a decimated pitching staff.  Pitchers like him, who change speeds well and use sinkers as their primary pitch, seem to have given the Tigers problems over the past couple of years.  He's faced Detroit four times in his career, posting an 0-1 record and 4.50 ERA.

Freshly called up from Toledo to replace the injured Marcus Thames, Ryan Raburn gets the start in right field to give the lineup another right-handed bat against the lefty Saunders.  He'll bat eighth, while Magglio Ordonez mans the DH spot, and Carlos Guillen plays in left field.

About three hours ago...

I’d have said there’s no way I’m making it through this game.

Now, after a Diet Coke, it’s a possibility. Still, if the Tigers would like to take a 20-0 lead by the fourth inning, I’d be fine with that.

Oh, I'd kill for 8-0 lead in the third.

But I’ll settle for JV with a good outing and a couple of timely bombs.

Wow, Shields must be shot

Those pitches weren’t even close. Like Mario and Rod have been saying, he’s been a great middle reliever over the past few years.

Why wins mean nothing to me in pitching stats:

If we hold on, Rincon gets the win.

I must say

I don’t know how good this Tigers team is, but it has a lot more fight in it than last year’s team.

richard bernstein

when i was in law school at wayne i would see richard bernstein there every now and then and would make fun of how dopey he looked to some of my friends. Turns out he’s blind. Whoops.

And Boney’s pants are down. Damn…he’s not here.

For those thinking Rincon will go once Zumaya returns...

I think you might see Perry go down. The kid needs to work on his control.

by Ian Casselberry on Apr 23, 2009 12:47 AM EDT reply actions

I'd rather see Lyon go down

Perry’s given up 1 hit so far this year. Lyon has 2 losses. I’ll take the wild kid who keeps the lead.

by handsomerob1 on Apr 23, 2009 12:49 AM EDT up reply actions

Lyon

Not his fault he keeps being left in too long.

agreed

made it look easy and it sure wasn’t. I’ve also been pleasantly surprised by Everett’s bat. He’s no slugger, but my expectations were so low its nice to see he can actually occasionally get a hit.

by ThaWalrus9 on Apr 23, 2009 12:52 AM EDT up reply actions

I’m pretty sure he’s also had more clutch at-bats than Renteria had all last year. I’ll take .225 if he comes through when it counts.
