Game 4: Tigers at Blue Jays
Detroit Tigers at Toronto Blue Jays, Apr 9, 2009 12:37 PM EDT
Rick Porcello vs.
Ricky Romero, 12:37 p.m. EST
Is today the beginning of a prosperous major league career for Rick Porcello with the Detroit Tigers or more of a learning hurdle, as Justin Verlander's first major league start was, back in 2005?
Different situations, obviously, as Porcello won a job in Spring Training, while Verlander made a spot start in a doubleheader. Not to mention the different points each pitcher was at in their careers. But this is going to be a very intriguing afternoon at Rogers Centre.
Also making his first major league start will be Ricky Romero for the Blue Jays. And as you've probably heard or read by now, this will be the first time two first-round draft picks rookie pitchers have made their debuts against each other.
With a day game after a night game, Gerald Laird and Placido Polanco are sitting this one out. Matt Treanor will make his first start of the season at catcher, and Ramon Santiago fills in at second base. Marcus Thames will also get the start in left field and bat second in the lineup today, with Carlos Guillen back at designated hitter.

Not to get sappy...
but just terribly sad news about Nick Adenhart. Just awful.

I just read about that, too
What a senseless tragedy.

just watched the angels-A’s last night. Very weird and tragic to see that happened

Porcello
Anyone dare to throw out a prediction for his performance today?
Check out www.spotstarters.com for more news on the Detroit Tigers.
what are the odds of everett actually getting a hit today? my vote is for santiago full time at short with everett playin every 3 days or so, hes definetly not a full time player.
a bit too early to give up on him I think

It's only been a few games...
let’s give him a few weeks.

Everett
is stilll WAY better on defense than Renteria. I don’t think anyone outside of Renteria’s family would disagree with that. That being said, Renteria is a much better hitter.

Captain Obvious statement of the day
Holy crap, Porcello looks young. I’d definitely card him.

Treanor
is the Adam Everett of catchers.

Jimmy really does
have some very interesting ideas about what the top of a lineup should look like, no?
He and LaRussa
Like sneaking a power guy into that #2 spot, for some reason.

Geez, don't make the rookie work, Marcus
First pitch swinging, fouls out to first base.
by Ian Casselberry on Apr 9, 2009 12:40 PM EDT reply actions
the whole half inning
seemed to be the philosophy “Rick’s nervous, let’s get out as fast as we can so he can pitch!”
Though somehow I dobt that was the plan
I was thinking the same thing
“Let the kid work out his butterfiles fast. Swing it, fellas.”
by Ian Casselberry on Apr 9, 2009 12:42 PM EDT up reply actions
Wow...
he’s going to get a lot of grounders.

Whew!
Fielding his position and turning the double play. Nice work.

What are the chances Cabrera homers in his first AB?
65%?

What are the chances someone takes a pitch in this inning to start an at-bat?

Cabrera
He’s basically the new Chris Shelton (circa spring 2006).
Check out www.spotstarters.com for more news on the Detroit Tigers.
Last year was the only slow start he’s had in his career. He usually comes out hitting everything like this.
by handsomerob1 on Apr 9, 2009 12:53 PM EDT up reply actions
I still think we should wait
until we see him hitting in cold weather before we decided it was a one time thing.
He seems like the kind of kid that could hit .300/35/120 in the Arctic.

I have never...
been on the Inge wagon. I have never been a big fan. I still want him to play well, though.

Mom told me Inge is my Tiger this year. My hands are tied.
by Ian Casselberry on Apr 9, 2009 12:58 PM EDT up reply actions
My mom was heartbroken when Pudge was traded, so Inge is her replacement. Don’t understand the mentality there, but hey, I’m not supposed to understand women.
funny
mine misses Pudge too. I haven’t asked who replaces him

That’s the Inge I added to my fantasy team…
by handsomerob1 on Apr 9, 2009 12:56 PM EDT up reply actions
Yes...
but he’s not technically on my team yet. He doesn’t clear waivers until tomorrow.
by handsomerob1 on Apr 9, 2009 12:58 PM EDT up reply actions
I was thinking about that....
Do you think he paid for them to fly out and put them up in a hotel. Or, are mom and dad the proud type and insisted on paying their own way.
Check out www.spotstarters.com for more news on the Detroit Tigers.
well
they look awfully well dressed for a baseball game.

Nice K there....
29 pitches through 2 innings.

Granderson...
Sometimes I am still really surprised by his opposite field power. Well done.
Check out www.spotstarters.com for more news on the Detroit Tigers.
Poor Rios...
That’s embarrassing.
Check out www.spotstarters.com for more news on the Detroit Tigers.
Marcus seems to have figured out
That the only way he’s getting three bags is to hit a guy in the face.
Thames goes Op-o
Maybe I don’t watch enough baseball… I’m missing all of these new baseball terms the announcers are using these days.
okay...
he shouldn’t feel bad about that. great play.
Check out www.spotstarters.com for more news on the Detroit Tigers.
Well, if Porcello can hold it together
The Tigs will have this one no problem. This kid looks very very hittable today.
Porcello
40 pitches through 3 innings.
Check out www.spotstarters.com for more news on the Detroit Tigers.
Porcello seems to be
a little afraid of making those defensive plays….but who can blame him after the post season 2006 Tiger pitchers?
What are the canadian provinces that no one can ever remember because they don’t produce too many NHL hockey players?
I think we named both of them
sure enough it’s newfoundland
by Kurt Mensching on Apr 9, 2009 1:40 PM EDT up reply actions
Like the aggressiveness
But that could’ve been a big inning without Santiago getting thrown out at home.
Two on, with one out and Grandy at the plate? I’d rather have that.
yeah
soon as the ball took one hop into the glove, I knew trying to score there would be a big mistake
by Kurt Mensching on Apr 9, 2009 1:41 PM EDT up reply actions
Only Curtis' second k of the year
good to see he’s cutting back on them. He’d definitely better than Sizemore in my book.
there's 10?
BC, Saskatchewan, Alberta, Manitoba, Ontario, Quebec, Nova Scotia, Newfoundland, Northwest Territories/Nunavat….what am I missing? Is PEI actually a province of its own? or is Lbardor separate from newfoundland?
Wouldn’t have minded Treanor going out to the mound to talk to Porcello there.
by Ian Casselberry on Apr 9, 2009 1:49 PM EDT up reply actions
crap
I was hoping he would go his entire career without allowing a run.
Check out www.spotstarters.com for more news on the Detroit Tigers.
They do! Although I don’t know if they’re called that anymore.
Might be “Arctic Freeze” or something like that.

probably whatever he has at the end of this inning

Inge at 3rd.
How does it look like he’s doing over there? Any re-adjustment problems? I haven’t been able to watch any of the games…being a little gunshy on the mlb.tv price.
yeah
not gonna miss him when this series is over!
by Kurt Mensching on Apr 9, 2009 2:05 PM EDT up reply actions
well that was fast
but he’s at 76 pitches, so I imagine the leash gets real short now

GameCast
sadly, I’m working and get no streaming audio or video, so I gotta watch the game cast on ESPN.com. is anybody warming up?
When Leyland gives that slight chopping motion with his left hand...
You know he’s laying down the law.
Everett!
No way Renteria dives for a ball up the middle like that!
Even if he didn’t get the out, he kept the ball in the infield.
get it out! get it out! get it out!
I just hummed that stupid song! why, oh why is it stuck in my head?
The Blue Jay announcers
are praising the umpire as if he were a god for that incredibly correct call.
When the Tigs are winning
they can play it. When the Tigs are losing, they just need to show Maggs’ HR in Oakland to win the pennant over and over again.
better not relax for long
I don’t think anyone is going to be given a free pass
by Kurt Mensching on Apr 9, 2009 2:40 PM EDT up reply actions
it would be more consolation
if the Rangers weren’t coming to Detroit

look away for a few minutes...
…and the game goes to pits….
so much for my streak in the espn streak for cash game….I think my tigers loyalty might cost me a few here and there, huh?
It's this excellent song
that the good and merciful people at FSN decided to bless us with 26 times a game.
One of these days, we’ll use cheap, in-house options in the bullpen and life will be so much better…..
like who?
The peanut vendors? actually….those guys have pretty decent arms, I’ve seen ‘em chuck bags across an entire section of fans and accurately hit the guy requesting the nuts before…granted, it nailed the guy upside the head, but…it got to the right vicinity, didn’t it?
I’d love to see Fien, Rapada, Dolsi (give the kid another chance), Kibler, Wise; although those last two are probably another year or two out….and ALL of them would be better than Rincon!
1.5 runs really
Guy on base didn’t belong to him but scored
by Kurt Mensching on Apr 9, 2009 3:14 PM EDT up reply actions
Sure.....
except that he threw 46 pitches during that time span, and most of his outs were fly outs. He was definitely serving up some BP. Also, looked like his command was only slightly shaky today instead of flat-out terrible
Like I said 1 run in 2.1.....
…..GOOD OUTING!!!
by BennieBladesFan on Apr 9, 2009 3:18 PM EDT up reply actions
MAKE IT STOP!
Ian if you have any contacts at FSN can you ask them to please stop playing that awful April in the D song….I’m wearing out the mute button on my remote.
Almosy had a RBI.....
…..Santiago got thworn out at the plate

Good Bullpen Ian.....
…….There were best in the league last year……If you down after 6 you aint gonna beat Toronto.

Well We Are One Game Ahead Of Last Season Place.....
…….For that im happy…..Tough place to win…..Gettin one is a good start
Bats
Well I knew the pitching would be suspect but I’m more worried about the hitting. That’s what 16 runs in 4 games? I get Halladay but the rest wouldn’t be in that rotation if Toronto’s whole staff wasn’t on the DL.
Its early....
……Pitching is usually ahead of hitting……Dont be worried.

OT: Up and running
Fellow Detroit sports fans, Motown String Music is up and running for business. Ian is my inspiration. I aim to do as good a job there as he does here. ::fingers crossed::
Good Series As A Whole....
……You cant win em all and they had a shot in 3 of the 4……Good Sign On the Road…..2 – 1 will be the best record in Div after the series…..so that puts us only 1.5 out……Plus Cle will be 0 – 3…….Much better start then last year……GO GET EM TIGERS!!!!
wow
I had that “april in the d” 30 minute show on while writing up my blog post, and as it turns out, we should be thanking The Good Luck Joes, because the other entrants really, really sucked.
