Robertson to the DL; French Called Up
For those wondering why Brandon Lyon was left in last night's game to throw 60 pitches, instead of bringing in a presumably fresher Nate Robertson to pitch that 13th inning, Nate was, in fact, injured.
In The Detroit Tigers Weblog's game thread, a commenter posted that Robertson wasn't used because he'd hurt himself and that Lucas French was going to be called up from Triple-A Toledo to replace him. (This was also posted in the MotownSports forum.)
There was no immediate confirmation of that following the game, and nothing was reported early this morning, but the Tigers just made it official: Robertson goes on the disabled list with a muscle strain in his lower back (according to the Tigers' official game notes), and French - who was scheduled to start today for the Mud Hens - has been recalled from Toledo. What's also interesting to note is that Nate is being placed on the DL retroactive to May 6. So he's apparently been nursing this for a while.
French is a 6' 4" left-handed starter who's appeared in six games with the Mud Hens this season. He's compiled a 2-2 record and 2.91 ERA, with 29 strikeouts (and nine walks) in 34 innings.

That's why!
No dead arm? Just a back strain. Maybe it was the strain of sitting so long.

Lyon
I think Brandon Lyon needs to be put on the DL as well…for sucking. I honestly don’t think I’ve seen him make an appearance yet this year where he didn’t allow at least 1 run.
to be fair
Lyon was gassed when he went back out there for the 13th. he had done very well to that point, and I think the Crede bomb was on his 62nd pitch. I don’t think you could ask anything more from Lyon.

Fair Enough
But my point still stands….when was the last time he had a clean outing?? And mop-up duty doesn’t really count.
It was a team loss
Had zumaya thrown more strikes and gone an extra inning, had joel zumaya not needed to pitch two innings, had lyon not needed to pitch 3+ innings, had josh anderson caught the ball he dove for and missed by inches, had the tigers batters hit into fewer DPs late in the game … maybe the results would be different.

I agree Kurt 100%
it’s a damn shame Nate was hurt because, as I said in my post after last night’s game, while Crede is a Tiger Killer, Nate is a Crede killer. Things could have been different.

Let's see what this kid has
I like French, he’s big and strong with a power arm and yes, he’s a leftie. Hopefully this leftie can actually get big league lefties out, something Nate the Great struggled with handily.
Not to be a smart a** but,
The reason the DL is retroactive to May 6th is because the last day he pitched was the 5th. i guess a muscle strain is a better excuse than a hang nail.
If I am not mistaken this will free up a roster spot for Bonderman for up to 30 days after Nate’s first minor league rehap game.
Yeah
if he was nursing this for a while, don’t you think we would have just put him on the DL yesterday and kept Rincon up? Or do you Rincon was gone no matter what?

Maybe they hoped Nate would heal up, but he tried to go yesterday, and the back wasn’t getting better.
Regardless, the May 6 thing makes sense, going back to the last time Nate pitched.

Tigers put Nate Robertson on disabled list; recall Luke French from Toledo
by Steve Kornacki
Thursday May 14, 2009, 12:38 PM
MINNEAPOLIS — Nate Robertson was placed on the disabled list prior to today’s game with a low back muscle strain that occurred Sunday in Cleveland when he was doing squat lifts. Tigers manager Jim Leyland said Robertson tried to get loose during the series here with the Twins, but could not.
Left-hander Luke French was recalled from Triple-A Toledo. He was 2-2 with a 2.91 ERA for the Mud Hens, with 29 strikeouts and nine walks in 34 innings.
Robertson was not available to pitch in Wednesday night’s 14-10 Detroit loss to Minnesota in 13 innings. Brandon Lyon threw 60 pitches in the game, the last being a grand slam to Joe Crede, and Leyland decided that infielder Ramon Santiago would have come in to pitch had Lyon retired Crede.
Santiago said he had not pitched in 11 years, but was an occasional closer for an amateur team in the Dominican Republic.
