Mount Leyland Erupts

For those of you that may have missed Jim Leyland's explosion at home plate umpire Paul Schreiber (after Schreiber made contact with Magglio Ordonez, who was arguing a called third strike), here's a YouTube clip for you. Check it out before it's taken down:

This was a big topic of discussion on ESPN's "Mike and Mike in the Morning" today.  Should Schreiber be penalized by Major League Baseball?  Wouldn't Magglio be facing a fine and suspension if he was the one who nudged/pushed Schreiber?

Yes...

to both. Magglio would be facing a fine and/or suspension. Same rules should apply to umps. All players argue a call they don’t like now and again, it’s part of the game. I respect Leyland for coming to the defense of Ordonez. I think he could see where it was headed after the ump put his hands on him, not once but twice. Ordonez never gets worked up and generally takes things in stride but I could see it coming last night and apparently Jimmy did too, thus the intervention. GO LEYLAND!!! & GO GO MAGGLIO!!!

I agree

I was also a little worried for Jim. As worked up as he got, I was praying all those cigs and whiskey didn’t catch up to him right there and give him a heart attack.

Agreed

That was a chickensh*t move by Schreiber. You don’t do that to any player, much less a veteran of Maggs’ caliber. Didn’t help Schreiber’s case that it was a bad call in the first place.

Concerns for his health aside, I got very fired up watching Leyland go out there and throw a fit on behalf of one his veterans. It was absolutely the right thing to do.

I was hoping it might break Maggs out of his slump too, but that doesn’t appear to have happened.

sad thing is

I can see the MLB suspending leyland for going batshit while doing nothing to the ump

If any action is taken here

the ump will see a fine of some sort. I don’t see the MLB being stupid enough to fine Leyland and then condone the ump’s “shooing” with no action. I agree, Leyland might see something (if coaches can get fined for arguing louder and more fierce-like), but if that happens then the ump won’t get off easy. I wouldn’t be surprised to see no action taken on this at all…guess we’ll see

I doubt we'll ever know though

the MLB might send a memo “remember don’t touch the players!” or something but it’s probably nothing we’ll hear of again.

That was....awesome!

It was great to see Leyland go Krakatoa. I felt a few balls were strikes and vice versa last night. The ump should be (but probably won’t be) punished and there’s no way Leyland should be punished at all.

ABC baby, always be closing.

Meh.

It didn’t seem like a big deal to me. I know that the contact is what Leyland was yelling about, but it was pretty clear that Leyland rushed the field to keep Magglio from getting ejected. If Schreiber hadn’t pushed him, I’m pretty sure Jim would have found something else to talk about.

If Schrieber had pushed Maggs, and then Maggs erupted and gotten ejected, the league might have had a tougher decision on its hands.

I don't want to hear any weak sh*t from Jason Grilli.

He ushered him

No player or umpire is supposed to do that. If someone is hurt, then that is a different story. He ushered him off the plate like a pet. It was demeaning. Can you imagine how Sheff would have responded? You just don’t do that, it doesn’t matter what player it is, but doing it to the Big Tilde is beyond comprehension.
