Game 23: Indians at Tigers
Cleveland Indians at Detroit Tigers, May 2, 2009 3:40 PM EDT
vs.
In theory, today's game is "nationally televised." But let's not kid ourselves here. Unless you live in Ohio, Michigan, West Virginia, or ... FARGO, NORTH DAKOTA?! (For Pronk or what?), you probably aren't going to catch this one. The Tigers are buried in the midst of their longest losing streak of the season, which, at three games, could be worse, right? But let's end it right now, mmmkay? This is not a habit to start, and losing baseball makes us all sad!
The baseball gods saw fit to flip the script last night, when they tagged Armando Galarraga with his 1.50 ERA (at the time) with a loss and handed Carl Pavano (9.50!) the victory. ... Will they continue to play such games when the Tigers send Zach Miner to the mound with more than twice the ERA of Cleveland's Aaron Laffey? Right handers have a .681 OPS against the left-handed Laffey. Left-handers should probably take the day off. Fortunately, the Tigers sluggers are mostly righties. The other Indians' storyline today is a lot of transactions in the past day or two. The main one? Highly-touted outfield prospect Matt LaPorta is joining the team after bashing a 1.024 OPS for Triple-A Columbus in April. Hey, at least he's not a lefty!
Oh and I forgot to mention last night, our SBN Indians counterpart to check out is Let's Go Tribe.

FUCK FOX
and the MLB. This is the worst of the worst. Pick one game to be played at their time slot. Don’t hold the rest of us hostage.
I am not bitter. Not at all.
as this JA
states, “We are actually going to take some of you up to the Motor City”, as if even he was amazed.
Treanor done for season
Jason Beck, on Twitter (@beckjason): Matt Treanor had right hip surgery Thursday to remove bone spur. Tigers say it’ll most likely be season-ending.
He expects Sardinha to be the backup from here forward.
i guess
he won’t get that batting average after all.

If you guys arent in the viewing area

I thought I recognized his voice…. Indians broadcasters annoy me. Best was 2 years ago when they actually said on the air to “Put one in Sheffield’s ribs”
man
the Mets/Phillies is on my HD Fox
The Tigers on this crappy standard definition signal may as well be streaming video for as bad as it looks.
looks more like 1-1/2 now
it’s great during football season. Depending how it pans out, I can get like 6 games on a sunday.

There’s a lot of technical stuff I could get into, but basically every station (Fox, NBC etc.) only has X amount of bandwidth they can use at a given time. This is just due to the limit of the television infrastructure across the nation. My guess is your Fox affiliate is throwing more horsepower at their HD feed, which makes their SD feed suffer.
I don't think it's quite that
one fox station is from green bay, the other is from marquette. The cable company picks up the green bay feed because if the packers don’t get on tv people storm the cable office with pitchforks and torches. (the congressman has even interceded, or at least taken credit for it) The Marquette station just sucks. (Our ABC is worse, no HD plus constant freezing and audio problems!)

Ah, gotcha. Wasn’t quite sure where you lived. Just sounds like you’re in one of those fun overlap zones!
it's interseting anyway

it's times like these when i'm glad i still haven't gotten around to buying an HDTV.
no high expectations. :-P
by okie for michigan on May 2, 2009 4:02 PM EDT up reply actions
I’ve had an HDTV for three years, but have not yet lived somewhere I can get any kind of HD signal (not even free OTA stuff). Thankfully, I’m moving over this next coming week. Comcast will be called, and I better be watching HD Tigers next weekend.
Where I live in Indianapolis I don’t have a choice. Comcast is all I get. ATT Uverse is not available (and probably won’t be) and I live on the river so there are too many trees in my backyard for a dish. Comcast = Satan.
I’m fine with Comcast. I’ve heard plenty of horror stories. I need them for internet anyway. My apartment won’t let me attach a DirecTV dish to my balcony, it has to be on a tripod. Then I have to give my apartment complex a $100 security deposit for said tripod (yeah, it’s a racket). Then I have to carry insurance in case the dish falls over and hurts someone below.
I’ll pass.
i watch HD sometimes at my grandparents’ house and then i come back home and it takes me a few minutes to adjust haha. i’m unemployed and in college right now, so that’s my reason. i have a paid internship starting may 27 though and an HDTV is one of the first things on my list of things to save up for.

Looks like he’s got a lot of movement on his fastball today… Looks really nice. Hopefully we can stay away from the one big inning that has plagued us…
Turned on the Derby.

I'd argue...
that worthless is a bit strong. But he’s quickly morphing into this year’s Sheff (old dude with enormous contract that gets to play regardless of how little he’s producing).
C'mon Inge...
As Dan says, “The Tigers most consistent hitter, Brandon Inge”
As true as that might be, it just doesn’t sound right…..
Send him home!
Everett……just take one for the team….just put the shoulder into it. It won’t hurt that bad.

When OMR goes out to get Miner,
he needs to run Anderson out to left, and give Mr. Raburn some cab fare to get the hell out of town.

can’t we trade him instead? of course, it might take some David Copperfield level illusions to make the opposing GM not look at the defensive end of things
maybe if we can use some CGI
on his outfield defense. put his face on Inge’s body maybe?

I've never understood this...
and I missed the first four and a half innings, but how is it that Zach fell apart so badly?
http://tigersamateuranalysis.blogspot.com
He would have been out of the inning with NO runs allowed,
if Raburn could actually field any position.
so, truthfully, there should be 5 unearned runs on the board for the Indians, and instead, Miner gets all the blame?
Yes
First, Raburn trips. Then he recovers, gets under the ball, and it pops out of his glove. It’s not like he tried to make a hard play and failed. There’s no way that was anything but an error. All 5 should be unearned because there were two outs.
by Kurt Mensching on May 2, 2009 5:39 PM EDT up reply actions
probably tired some
he wasn’t keeping the ball down as well. still would have been out of it with a 5-0 lead if raburn hell onto it.

Had every reason to lose, and for awhile it looked as if that was our goal. But it’s a win, and we’re back over .500.
