Game 41: Rockies at Tigers
Colorado Rockies at Detroit Tigers, May 23, 2009 7:05 PM EDT
Jason Marquis (3-4, 4.30) vs.
Armando Galarraga (3-2, 2.42), 7:05 p.m. EST
Armando Galarraga can't pitch any worse than he did on Sunday, right? Right? I mean, he couldn't even finish the first inning last time out. So even if he makes it to the second inning, that's some progress. But seriously, Galarraga has allowed five runs or more in four straight starts. And in those 17.1 innings, he's thrown nine strikeouts and nine walks.
Galarraga probably has one more chance after this, since Jeremy Bonderman is scheduled for one more rehab start with Triple-A Toledo, and the Tigers don't have an off-day this week. But if he throws another stinker tonight, perhaps a decision on his status could be made more quickly.
For Colorado, Jason Marquis had one of his best games of the season in his last start. Against the Braves, he gave up just one run and five hits in eight innings. Marquis has pitched better on the road so far this year, with a 3-1 record and 2.79 ERA in four starts.
Here are tonight's starting lineups:

Kinda harsh, Ian.
But oh, so true!

might not be a bad idea after all
start warming up, Zach Miner!

That was brutal.
I mean, when you’re running full speed, I guess it’s hard to back off. But how about backing off there?

Laird touched him
before he touched that plate.

I don't know
the X-mo made it look like Fowler slid around the tag. have to watch it again during the commercials
yeah
I think it was a good call. Not entirely sure Laird ever even touched him with the glove either.
I don't think the glove even touched him
but his hand was over the plate. just have to credit him.

Galarraga's the only pitcher not giving the Tigers a chance to win right now
There’s not going to be any deliberation once Bondo is ready.

Give 'em the Nolasco Treatment
Gala needs a stint in Toled-uh. He’s not only pitching poorly, but he has ZERO mound presence.
Doin' It Now...
Realized I hadn’t really voted so I’m getting in at least Cabrera and Inge. Granderson’s AVG a little low to top Crawford, Bay or Ad. Jones
I would stomp on a puppy's tail for a 5 run inning right now
ok, not really. but I would have to think about it for a second or two

wait, why not?
we all have to make sacrifices

There gonna have to start
manufacturing runs somehow with a bunt, stolen base, anything at this point. That pitcher is really good.

he seems to be either really good or really bad
and today is apparently one of the good ones

Marquis
Yeah, it’s odd because as I said that I’ve never heard anyone say “he’s really good” of Marquis, it does seem that every time I have his game on-he pitches really well. His career stats haven’t really been awful though. He has an outlier on both ends of the spectrum: 2006 – 6.04 ERA, 2004 – 3.71. The prevailing opinion that he’s “sucks” is probably based heavily on fantasy baseball influence.

Oh, Gerry

Low expectations means
being happy the two HR the starter gives up were solo shots. Oh irony, I just can’t quit you.

Gameday is so far behind right now...
It’s going to be the 6th inning before they finish the top of the 5th…
Okay, let's check my math
Ian watching at home: Rockies 3, Tigers 1
Ian briefly leaving the house: Tigers 3, Rockies 3
Ian returns home: Rockies 4, Tigers 3
I need to find a reason to leave the house…

keep Raga and I company on our trip to Toledo?
I don’t wanna drive back alone.

Robertson
Great. Rockies will bust this one wide open in no time. So glad to see Armando is oh so concerned with keeping his job.
Leave house to walk dog
and we’re behind and Nate is our ptcher now? For real?

nope, but our starting catcher is beating their starting catcher
2 legs to 1. Moral victory, ftw

Mauer
Yeah, he’s finally delivering across the board. I was beginning to wonder if the power was going to emerge. I remember he was my centerpiece of a made up team in MVP 2005 (best baseball game ever) and he won three MVPs! :)
Yeah.
To turn down a full ride scholarship to FSU to play quarterback, to become a no power, high average catcher was starting to look like a bad decision

if any day was a gift to colorado
the ERA’s of Detroit’s pitchers today:
Galarraga: 5.62
Robertson: 5.40
Lyon: 6.88
see if the tigers can overcome it anyway.
Slightly OT: the draft
Kevin Goldstein of Baseball Prospectus has us getting UNC’s Alex White. I like it!
“…that leaves Alex White as a great find at ninth overall. He’s not huge, but at 6-foot-3 and 200 pounds, he’s hardly small, and his fastball ranks with any non-Strasburg arm around.”
Tate
I don’t think he gets to us, plus I’m leery of toolsy guys. Something about him screams “bust!” to me.
I feel your skeptacism
would just like to see a position player for a change. Grant from USC would be great as well.

I hope we get a HR!
