Game 44: Tigers at Royals

Detroit Tigers at Kansas City Royals, May 26, 2009 8:10 PM EDT

  Edwin Jackson (4-2, 2.55) vs.   Zack Greinke (7-1, 0.82), 8:10 p.m. EST

Now this could be fun.  Only six starting pitchers in the American League have an ERA below 3.00 and two of them face off tonight at Kauffman Stadium.

Zack Greinke has been in a different category this season, however, allowing just six earned runs in 66 innings.  He arguably pitched his "worst" game of the year last time out, giving up eight hits (and two runs) over six innings.  But Greinke still would've gotten his eighth win if the Royals' bullpen hadn't eventually blown it.  Perhaps his best effort so far was against the Tigers, in which he allowed only three hits in a complete game performance.

Edwin Jackson has had five days of rest since throwing 132 pitches last Thursday afternoon.  But if he tires out earlier this evening, we'll probably have a good idea as to why.  Jackson has won his previous three starts, giving up just four runs in 23 innings, with 20 strikeouts and six walks.  Five of those walks were in that last start, however, which was his highest total of the season.  If he walks that many batters again, fatigue could be a reason.

Here are tonight's starting lineups:

And I forgot to mention yesterday that Royals Review has your SB Nation opposing view for this series.

UPDATE: Dan Dickerson will be out of the Tigers' radio booth tonight, after he hurt himself while jogging.  John Keating will jump over from FOX Sports Detroit and handle the play-by-play with Jim Price.

Anyone else expecting Jackson to look a little shaky after 132 pitches the other day?

by Ohio Tiger on May 26, 2009 8:02 PM EDT reply actions

It's all about how you are playing now

And the Tigers are playing great. 13 runs last game means we could be on a hot streak, similar to the ones we had against the AL West, where we scored big runs on consecutive nights.

norfolk announcer

said bonderman isn’t looking especially sharp tonight. he’s allowed 2 runs (1 earned) with three walks. Announcer isn’t real descriptive of the pitching. I’ve only had it on for two innings but sounds like Toledo doesn’t have great defense.

by Kurt Mensching on May 26, 2009 8:16 PM EDT reply actions

No, he hasn’t been real sharp… fastball is topping out around 85 too. not the same Bondo we’ve seen in the past

there were some hits that should have been outs in his last outing. 3 walks is a bad sign though. What inning?

by Detroit4lyfe on May 26, 2009 8:17 PM EDT up reply actions

Bonderman hasn’t allowed a run since the 2nd inning – it’s 4-2 Hens, bottom 5 – 87 pitches

saw him play in Toledo yesterday… nothing too special. a walk, a bloop single, and a line drive that would have been a home run but was just foul. other than that, couple of ground outs. Big kid though.

I would guess

their angst mirrors ours over Jurrjens. Actually, I find it hard to believe anyone’s angst mirrors what people say about the Jurrjens trade.

He probably benefited a bit by getting out of the AL East, and he definitely benefited from Rick Knapp and throwing more strikes. I suspect they wouldn’t recognize him actually.
