Game 46: Tigers at Orioles
Detroit Tigers at Baltimore Orioles, May 28, 2009 7:05 PM EDT
Armando Galarraga (3-4, 5.74) vs.
David Hernandez (0-0, -.--), 7:05 p.m. EST
To steal a line from Kurt, tonight's original pitcher for the Orioles - Koji Uehara - sounded like a character who might be found on the Starship Enterprise, rather than the Baltimore starting rotation. Alas, Uehara was beamed aboard the 15-day disabled list, due to a strained hamstring, pitting the Tigers against a rookie strikeout machine.
David Hernandez has thrown 60 strikeouts (versus 13 walks) in 43.1 innings for Triple-A Norfolk this season. (In his last start, he struck out 14 batters.) His record was 3-1 with a 2.91 ERA in eight starts. Those strikeout numbers probably aren't a fluke, as he led the Eastern League in that category last year. (Here's more from Scout.com, if you're interested.)
We keep saying that Armando Galarraga is running out of chances to hold onto his spot in the Tigers' starting rotation. But there's still some room on his leash, as long as Jeremy Bonderman still needs work on his Triple-A rehab assignment. Galarraga was arguably better in his last outing, allowing fewer than five runs for the first time in five games and showing better control. But he's still giving up quite a few hits, as he tries to rediscover that slider.
Camden Chat has your SB Nation opposing view for this four-game series.
UPDATE: Curtis Granderson bats fifth once again. And despite his 4-for-5 game yesterday, Josh Anderson isn't batting leadoff. Actually, he's not even in the lineup, as Clete Thomas gets the nod. Here are your starters:

Hrmm.
Is this Leyland permanently moving Curtis to the 5-hole? I can understand Anderson, but Clete…
Yeah I was thrown off by Clete in the leadoff hole a little, too
Would have expected Anderson to be at least in the lineup after going 4-5…

I never understood that...
guy goes 4-5 and you sit him? love Leyland…but screw the lefty-righty match up thing,,,he swears up and down by it,,,does every manager in the league do that? i mean i know they do it to a point,,but 4 for 5 in the lead off spot? come on,,,and Grandy is much better with his power and speed in the middle of the line up batting 250 something,,,AS for tonight,,Armando mania needs to return,,,if he allows more then 3 runs and pitches less then 7 he needs to be moved cannot keep putting him out there…the guy has allowed 4 or more in like 5 straight starts,,,,,
Luke Scott + Melvin Mora + Armando Galarraga = nightmares tonight
I’m sleeping with the light on tonight.
Somebody needs to get mlb.com a map
Cuz here in NC I’m blacked out of watching Orioles games. Oh well, I get to listen to Al and follow along on Gameday.
I'm eager to see Adam Jones play
Though I hope he doesn’t do too well in this series.

So pumped
I just paid $14.95 to be able to listen to Tigers games for the rest of the year..wanted game day tv but Wife wouldnt approve it..but hey this is a hell of a lot better then Gamecast
You better put your wife in her place! My special lady isn’t thrilled about it, but that is why she’s my special lady, and not my wife!

Larish
If it works, hey…but his batting stance drives me absolutely nuts. He sits there so still, and then has this huge swing. The swing doesn’t bother me, but just sitting there…..odd.

how about leyland's answer

Nothing like Tigers pitching

OK SO....if Gallaraga pitches well tonight....
who goes when Bondo is ready?
I'm going to say Nate
And while they won’t go with a six-man rotation or something weird like that, they might give everyone a break by skipping some turns.
by Ian Casselberry on May 28, 2009 7:41 PM EDT up reply actions
so Ian...
if they wont go with a 6 man who is going to take Nates spot in the pen?
Yeah, that's the question...
I mean, Leyland barely uses Nate anyway, so… maybe one of the starters gets a little “on the side” work for an inning or two to stay sharp?

I'd like to see Bondo get up to 91-92 consistently

Doesn’t it seem like the way to beat the Tigers is to put in some pitcher making their career/season debut? I mean Romero, Palmer and now we let this guy off the hook for 2 walks in the first inning

the good one or the bad one? But, we have to remember (or at least I do) that we’ve become spoiled with our great starting pitching and expect better from Armando.

Meh...
I don’t think we would have scored a run in the 9th no matter what…
It just wasn’t our game tonight.
By the way...
I almost never join in on the conversation during games where Verlander or Galarraga start, but I figured I’d stop by. I know you’re gonna disagree with me, but I don’t think Galarraga was bad tonight. Let’s face it: He’s going to give up home runs. He gave up a bunch last year. As long as he limits them to solo shots, I don’t have that much of a problem with it. But he went seven innings and gave up three runs (last one should not have scored), and while I don’t think he’s all the way back yet, I think this was a step in the right direction. But one thing that’s been kind overlooked is that throughout his struggles, Galarraga has not gotten much run support (with the exception of his disastrous start against Oakland). That has continued tonight. And that is really, really frustrating.
