John Sickels Mock Draft

Hello everyone,

I'm the guy running the Detroit Tigers organization in the upcoming John Sickles 2009 Mock First Year Player Draft. I've been a big Tigers fan for my entire life, and this is my first year running a mock draft over at Sickles' website. I'm posting in an attempt to try to get some Tigers fans who know something about prospects to help me out with my MOD (which is posted here). Any help you guys could give me would be appreciated.

Thanks!

honest question about your decisions

if you’re not trying to run the draft like you believe the Tigers will run it, will the results be all that informative?

How will going with who’d you draft bring us more information?

Legit question

I’m going to run the draft as if I’m the scouting director, true. It means we’re probably going to favor position players over players with a big fastball like David Chadd prefers. That being said, I’m also going to draft as if I’m in the actual chair of the Tigers draft director- I won’t shy away from signability and the like.

Also, I have a big problem with “drafting like your scouting director”, especially with this draft. We have no idea how anything beyond the first pick is going to shape up, so just getting people involved in draft coverage is key. I have considered a lot of pitchers that Chadd will most likely be going for, and I’ve written about them in my MOD’s. But the key to me is less guessing who the Tigers will pick and more offering a wider opinion on a bunch of prospects that the Tigers could pick.

You can never have to much pitching…..You can always trade young pitching for needs…..DRAFT PITCHER!!!!!

Sweet.

Thanks for posting here, I’ve been following your stuff when I get the chance. Couple questions/comments:

1.) Would you grab Donovan Tate if he falls to us? There are massive signability concerns, but he’s Boras, so he’s likely to actually sign if enough money is thrown at him.

2.) He’s not a power-league player, but Brandon Wycoff out of Illinois is tearing up the Big Ten. Also, If you subscribe to the Sickels philosophy that in younger players a low K rate is attractive, even if the walks aren’t there, get this: 6 K in 216 AB. That’s redonkulous. Also plays a good SS. Might be worth grabbing in round 2/3, especially if Green doesn’t get to us in round 1.

2a.) I’m not sold on Green, based on stats. What’s the up-close scouting line on him?

3.) Could you please cross-post your MOD’s here? You’ll get a lot more response that way.

Thanks for picking up the ball.

I don't want to hear any weak sh*t from Jason Grilli.

Boras....

….isnt a concern…..Porcello fell all the way to 20 coule years ago becasue no one wanted to pay and the Tigers signed him right away…..They did the same thing with Cameron Maybin the year before…..signability is not a issue with Tigers.

I'll be cross-posting my results over here

As well as an actual analysis of the Tigers picks- probably through about round 5 or so.

And as far as Green goes

The big thing with Green going into this year was that he was a very good player, but there was far too much hype surrounding him. People expected Tulowitzki/Longoria kind of numbers, and Green was merely good. He’s still a very athletic player with a whole bunch of tools, and he’s just underperforming what he could do. But even his underperformance makes him an above average SS in my mind. He’s a steal at #9.
