Game 24: Indians at Tigers
Cleveland Indians at Detroit Tigers, May 3, 2009 1:05 PM EDT
VS.
LINEUPS
Last year's Cy Young Award winner, the Indians' Cliff Lee, faces this year's great big ball of confusion, the Tigers' Justin Verlander, in the rubber match of today's series between Detroit and Cleveland. If the two pitch to their potential, this game could be over by the second period of the Red Wings' game. But both have been shaky this year.
The Tigers have not won a series at home since sweeping the Rangers their opening weekend. Since then, they've split with the White Sox and dropped 2 of 3 to the Yankees. Can the Tigers reverse that trend today? We'll find out!
Let's Go Tigers!

Wow
Tigers attendance is down 24% from last season. I guess that’s to be expected after a year that was sold out pretty much daily, to a year where 10 games have been played mostly in bad weather while the economy crumbles a year after the team finished in last.
Yesterday’s 35,000 or so was promising though. Hopefully it picks up before ESPN freak out about fire sales.
Oh wait, too late.
a struggling pitcher facing the Tigers
i’ve seen this storyline before, and i’m not too happy with the way it’s been turning out
http://www.fromthecopa.blogspot.com/
well, he's not struggling so much now
He’s allowed 3 earned runs in his last 22 innings. So hopefully that storyline doesnt apply.

Update on Raburn's fielding error from yesterday
@beckjason: The Raburn play from Saturday has been changed to a 2-base error, making those 3 runs on Miner unearned.
somehow
I doubt that effects many fantasy teams, ha! but it’s nice to see they went back to review it.

I like
the way we’re making Lee work today… looks like a good gameplan. It’s only a matter of time til we get to him or that combustable bullpen
On a completely non-baseball related note
I pulled the last 3 fillets from last year out and smoked them. Bring on Spring!
where are you again?
I’d love to have weather that nice. I’m just happy it hit 50 today! Not fair!

per this article
The American League record for most consecutive strikeouts in a game is 8 held by 4 pitchers.
that might mean 8 consecutively
not just 8 straight outs. Either way, the fact that I googled “most consecutive outs by strikeout” proves that JV is dealing
Sardinha
They seriously cannot be thinking of riding out the rest of the year with him the backup C.
And wow; Raburn sucks.
tigers wanted him to play regularly
in Toledo. They probably believe Sardinha has plateaued. It makes sense.

Free Ryan Raburn
has a different connotation this year. Last year it meant play him more. This year it means cut him loose.
Maybe they were trying to showcase Raburn for a trade...
since he’s out of options to the minors. I don’t think that has worked.
Wow Carlos...
…feel free to show up any time you’d like. It’s May for crying out loud.
Be right back everyone
I’m gonna go download “A House, A Home” from the habitat for humanity website
yeah
and it also puts an extra baserunner on in a close game. Concede the run, don’t give them a chance to score more.

Please not Ryan Perry
the kid’s got a great arm but he’s not ready for high leverage innings like this just yet.
with two outs, I do
with one out, I’m sketpical, but it sets up the double play. With no outs, I don’t like it. If the batter is Victor Martinez, maybe.

in a 1-1 ballgame in the ninth
but in the seventh, I still want to prevent the big inning and take the out. It’s the same reason you hate to see your team sacrifice. You don’t want to give up an out.

you've only got 6 more outs to go
You’ve got to be most concerned with not falling behind if you can avoid it. There’s not right answer, just personal preference.
I can do without...
Wade and his drama queen injury nonsense. Dude is apparently always injured, the way he acts.
heres audio of the ATL radio guys mocking Wade

I already have to deal with Ovechkin/Crosby
Not sure if I could deal with both. lol

need to...............
get Verlander a freakin run here
exact;y
Leyland left him in so he could get the win, so lets get it for hum guys

I think Inge is a new hitter
I don’t think he’s as good as he’s showing, but I don’t see him reverting to as bad as he was, either.

he's swinging less
and making a bit better contact. So there’s definitely change.

not saying Sardinha is slow
but even a distracted toddler would have been standing on third

I think I'm falling in love with this 2009 Tigers team
so much more heart and determination than last year’s team. Last year’s team folds when JV loads the bases. Last year’s team doesn’t get a couple runs to back up JV after he manages that Houdini act.
Shows what pudge
did to this team

I believe Carlos....
has now taken up permanent residence in the Sheff/Renteria Doghouse. He’s not the building Super that Grilli was, but it’s getting ugly.
Carlos Guillen
his BABIP (batting average on balls in play) was .239 coming into today, and he’s got 4 flyouts today. That suggests he’s been getting unlucky so far this year.
Anyone know
what happened to Timo Perez? I know he’s left handed, so not really what we need, but he’s not in Toledo this year and was in spring camp… did we let him go? I didn’t hear of such a thing
anyone know what happened to brent Cleveland???
I would rather have him in Left field then Guillen,..not totally dogging him or anything I have always loved Carlos but dude if your still batting 200 at the end of May I will be screaming for your head
Is that Zoom?
warming in the pen?… I would have assumed he was unavailable today after pitching 2 innings yesterday. Would he come in in the 9th?
apparently that has changed
@RonWade , Tigers marketing manager, tweeted:
Zumaya has changed his entrance song. Doesn’t quite have the feel of “Voodoo Child”
98....99
hesitant to say but i think Joel is back

Scott Baker has a no-no
thru 5. Sorry if anyone is starting him in fantasy, or is a closet Twinkies fan
Chet Lemon for the HOF
not that it mattes in may
but a twinkies win puts tigers in first place, long as they hold on here

Directv doesn't have an HD feed
I know I’m a whiner, but SD really looks like crap after seeing everything in HD
Great Game
pitched by Verlander. He deserved the win.
Glad to see...
us winning games like this one today. Last year we could only win if we pounced all over the opposing pitcher early. Really refreshing to see us hang in there, ride a quality pitching performance, pick up important runs late, and close it out with our bullpen. This kind of game never would have happened last year.
From the Indians' SB Nation gamethread:
“no chance. This guy is ON.”
Yeah, Verlander was dealing today.
Chris Jakubauskas
Pitcher from Seattle. He needs to be a Tiger. I wanna see a fellow Lithuanian-American in the D. Send Miggy, Porcello, and Iorg. I don’t care. This needs to happen. And 3-3, woo
Chet Lemon for the HOF
Ian's at that game
and glad he doesn’t have to blog about it with that guy’s name, I’m sure.
