At Least You're Not Luis Castillo Today
No matter how the rest of the Tigers' series with the Pirates develops this weekend, you can probably rest assured that you will not see a play like this from Placido Polanco or Ramon Santiago. (I hope I didn't just jinx them.)
If you didn't see or hear how last night's Yankees-Mets game ended, here's some video for you (with several TV and radio calls of the moment), courtesy of The Mets Report. Check it out before it gets taken down:
But hey, at least Luis Castillo feels bad about it. That will surely count for something with Mets fans... right? And thanks to Kurt, who shook me out of my Red Wings stupor and told me to find highlights of the blooper on MLB Network or ESPN.

Even Brad Stuart called Castillo up and was like, “Dude…”

And in a small twist of irony...
Gary Sheffield is starting at DH for the Mets in their interleague series.
That’s just shocking they’re not letting him start in left. Riiiiiight….
He Hes Been...
….Now in interleague play he is DHing……He has been playing well.

Sheff has been playing the field quite a bit
and he’s hitting again.

Well, I hope so
See, in the NL a pticher will bat. They usually bat 9th. In the AL we have what is called a designated hitter (DH). This means that players sole purpose in that game is to take ABs. They do not play the field (defense) during the game. Gary Sheffield plays on the New York Mets. They are based out of New York City, New York. This is the most populated urban center in the United States of America. The Mets play in the National League (NL). Because of this, there is typically no deisgnated hitters. All players involved in the game must play on defense as well. When Gary Sheffield plays for the Mets, he plays on defense.
There is also a time of the year when all teams in the MLB (Major League Baseball) play ‘Interleague games’. AL rules and NL rules are determined by whichever team is the host team. The New York Yankees are currently hosting the New York Mets. This is commonly referred to as the ‘Subway Series’. Because of this, the games are played under AL rules in which a designated hitter is inserted into the lineup. These rules allow the New York Metropolitans to insert Gary Sheffield into this aforementioned DH position as he is a defensive liability. It is notable that they went this route the first opportunity they were given, as they would much rather place a younger, more athletic player into the left field (LF) position. Once teams have concluded interleague play, the Metropolitans will once again be required to place Gary Sheffield in the field (on defense).
Now, if he HASN’T been playing the field quite a bit up until now…that, my friends, is called “cheating”…as NL rules do not allow a player to play as a designated hitter as previously mentioned. We can also call this “stating the obvious”.
Cheating? Stating the obvious?
What in the hell are you talking about? I’m a big fan of Gary Sheffield and he is mashing for the Mets. You don’t need to talk down to me. I know what I’m talking about.

Mashing?
I don’t think a .250 BA with 6 HR and 22 RBI is exactly “mashing.” If you like that, there’s a couple guys named Dontrelle and Jeremy who are straight mowing batters down.

Make that 7 HR, 6 doubles, 2 stolen bases and 35 BB
.261 average and rising. It took him several weeks to get in shape to even play the OF. Alot of people don’t like Gary and that’s OK. I do like him and love watching him play baseball. The Mets love him, cause he’s mashing!

Wow...
I stand corrected, he’s clearly tearing the cover off the ball. Of those 7 bombs, how many came in the last two games at that band box in the Bronx? Take out those two games and see where his batting stats are.

I don't look backwards.

Sometimes it's good to watch other teams make mistakes
We sometimes dog the Tigers when they make bad plays but it happens to just about every team.
