Fernando Rodney Needs to be Done!!!
Fernando Rodney should be cut. Tonight. He has been pitching absolutely terribly lately, and he only held on tonight by pure luck and good defense. He walks way too many. He has never even been that good, and the way he has been pitching is inexcusable. Brandon Lyon would make a perfectly acceptable closer for the time being. Hell, I would be much more confident in any single A pitcher they've got in Lakeland than I would be in Rodney going out there again. His time is up. At the very, very least, get him the hell out of the closer role. PLEASE!

I couldn't agree with you more
I can’t believe how many people on here defend that guy.

Plus We Hasve Bigger Concerns Then Rodney.....
…….We need two starters and 2 or 3 bats…..Fernando is the least of the concerns for this team.

+1
Fernando may not be the best pitcher, but he’s getting the job done in the 9th.

Nando
Very seldom sets ’em down 123. Somebody usually gets a hit or a walk and like last night ends in a DP or a ground ball to end the inning. Not too shabby with his saves record.

Rodney should be released? You know what, Granderson didn’t homer last night… cut him, too. Oh and while your at it, how about Verlander? He gave up 5 runs in 4 innings! Cut Him! Now! Lets just call up the entire roster of the WhiteCaps and finsih the season with them, these bums can’t get it done!
What a joke!

Instead of being happy that my team finally broke their losing streak with a big win...
I’ll sit on my computer and bitch about the guy who closed the game (even though he threw a scoreless inning) because I am simply never satisfied.
Riiiiiiight.

Feel free to ping me anytime you feel the urge
I am me and only me. You seem a bit paranoid, though. If everyone doesn’t agree with your assessment of the team, you believe there’s some sort of conspiracy.

This is funny...
According to MLB.com, Rodney is ranked 16th in saves (14) with 14 SVO. That looks perfect to me, I think??? Now, of the top 20 saves leaders, Rodney is the only one who hasn’t blown a save. So, where is the issue?
It is blatantly obvious that Rodney is a different pitcher when their isn’t a save opportunity. But, when the game is on the line I don’t want any one else on the mound (He does make me nervous though).

Rodney should be put on notice
Lyon and Zumaya should be given a chance to close, I’m not saying pull Rodney yet but let Lyon try it once or twice then see how Rodney reacts to it. I think the Big picture is when Rodney is throwing stirkes his fast ball and change up is better then Lyon or Zumaya best two pitches

Zumaya.....
….Wil never be a closer…..He doesnt have the mentality and its howed this year…..IE bases loaded walk the other night…..Chicago afyer Grandy tied it off Jenks….maybe one day but hes not nearly ready to be a closer…Not even close
by BennieBladesFan on Jun 19, 2009 12:39 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
Whereas walking the bases loaded says "closer" to you?
by We Need a Closer on Jun 19, 2009 1:07 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
maybe....
……but he didnt walk in the run and made the pitch when he had to…..to a left handed batter none the less….he has poise….thats what a closer needs

Zumaya
Joel is heathly for the first time in a long time, He’s throwing the way he did back in 06. I’m not saying name him the full time closer but Rodney last couple performances leaves alot to question. Being a closer is 90% mental 10% physical, once he gets over that he could be a closer
by msivits on Jun 19, 2009 2:39 PM EDT reply actions 0 recs
By the way do you think Joel had a flash back watching Motte
give up those 2 homers : ), when Joel is mixing in his breaking ball with the fast ball he looks like a closer

As Does....
….Any Hard Thrower

Not Zumaya
Rodney has been one of top five players on the team by any realistic assessment this year. I agree that he was pretty bad the last two years, but he’s shown tremendous poise and guts all year. He’s contributed to 26 wins and only 2 losses. Nobody has their best stuff every game. That’s why no team goes 162 and 0 or no pitcher 35-0. What’s truly impressive is when a guy is having an off game and still finds a way to contribute something positve to the team. I’ve seen too many Tiger hitters give up at bats when they were having a tough night or facing a tough pitcher and too many pitchers give up and groove one when they didn’t have their top command or feel one night. But not Rodney. He’s battled tremendously and really been a surprise (only gave up 1 homer on the year). Last night he saved an important game for the team. Granted, he saved it mostly from himself, but sometimes that’s the hardest save of all.
I wish others on the team would learn from Rodney’s example this year, particularly Zumaya (4 for 19 in save opportunities in his career). Hard to understand the abuse Rodney gets on these sites if you look at reality. Maybe if the Tigers had Papplebon they could have gone 4-7 on this road trip or even 5 and 6, instead of, well, 5 and 6. Yet, people act like he’s somehow hurting the team. I don’t know if he’ll hold up the whole season considering his past shoulder problems and Tommy John surgery (especially if he pitches 3 days in a row as he’s done twice already), but Rodney has been one of the most impressive and improved players on the team so far.

The fact this guy is calling for Brandon Lyon to close is ironic
You clearly don’t understand the ebb and flow of baseball.

It's quite obvious from your condescending tone that nobody but you understands it...
…at least in your mind.

close my front door…….

I just like to think ahead
I wonder how many saves rodney will have to blow " or close enough to scare leland to start testing to back up plans"…

13/13, that’s all that needed to be said right now.

14
Make that 14/14 and yesterday’s performance was flawless. 2 ground balls and a strikeout to end the game.
Sure, he makes it more interesting than that sometimes, but we got to the WS in 2006 with Rollercoaster Jones! We should be used to the drama. Rodney is doing fine, some people just like to gripe.

Fernando Rodney
Makes things interesting. I enjoy watching him. We originally acquired Lyon for the closer position ( at least that’s what I thought). He’s not so great. If he was that good, why wouldn’t the D-Backs have kept him? He kinda sucks. but I’ve seen way better out there, including Fernando. GO F-ROD!!!

He's a slightly above average pitcher
But he gets the job done. Besides, don’t we want exciting baseball games? ;)
