Placido Polanco and Miguel Cabrera have the touch. They have the power. Yeah!

So what a difference a week makes, eh?

Last Monday, the Tigers couldn't score any runs, the back end of the starting rotation was a question mark, and Minnesota was catching up in the AL Central.  An off-day was welcome relief.  A week later, the lineup is swinging the bats well, the Tigers have built on their lead over the Twins, and... well, that back end of the rotation is still uncertain (though much less so).  An off-day feels more like a pleasant afternoon nap.

And plenty happened over the weekend that's worth talking about:

  • Jim Leyland has a new contract extension, signed through 2011.
  • Magglio Ordonez's agent, Scott Boras, squawked about his client's standing with the Tigers (and drew the wrath of Leyland in the process).
  • Alfredo Figaro made his major debut on Saturday, and earned a win over the Brewers.
  • Ryan Perry was optioned to Triple-A Toledo.
  • Justin Verlander and Edwin Jackson won't follow one another in the starting rotation anymore.

Did I miss anything?  It kind of feels like I did.  Of course, this is "BYOBYB," which means you can chat about anything else, as well.  (Anyone have a new music recommendation?)  Knock yourselves out, BYB Bunch!

P.S.  Have you said hello in The BYB Introduce Yourself Open Thread yet?

Trying to bring the Freddy Dolsi discussion

to the open thread. Not a move I saw coming, that’s for sure.

And as Kurt reported

Dolsi is up with the big boys again.

I’m not so sure that he’s going to be better than Perry.

He's banned

Sorry I didn’t get to it earlier. I was out most of the day, and then we lost power around 5 p.m., lasting through the rest of the night. But he’s gone now.

(So is We Need a Closer, so you can stop baiting him.)

Yikes!

I’m not even sure that my oven would work – I use my toaster oven if I have to heat anything, and do most of my cooking (such as it is) on the stove top. So far that hasn’t blown up or caught fire.

Toaster ovens

My mother is using a large toaster oven to heat food rather than a conventional oven.

As for baseball:

I believe Magglio will recover but is probably not going to be the Magglio most have come to adore.

I thought they'd go with a lefty, since we're a little thin there.

so French or Fu-Te were my predictions. I’m with Tagne — not sure Dolsi represents an improvement over Perry.

Dolsi

they say he’s been a lot better in June. But I’m certainly not wowed by the move and feel like there were better options out there. Had Dolsi earned it by having a good couple of months in Toledo I might feel different. But I’m really not excited.

by Kurt Mensching on Jun 22, 2009 2:00 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

Dolsi has not given up a run in June and what’s most impressive is he only has 1 walk in his last 10.2 IP

by Detroit4lyfe on Jun 22, 2009 2:26 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Perry has had.....

……major control problems all year….Dolsi cant be much worse

by BennieBladesFan on Jun 22, 2009 2:44 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

I'll give the benefit of the doubt

he’s probably not going to be put into high pressure situations. I just feel like there’s better options on his own Mud Hens team the Tigers could have looked at first.

Right now, I’m less concerned about Dolsi’s control and more concerned about his inability to strike guys out.

by Kurt Mensching on Jun 22, 2009 2:56 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

I'm not saying there weren't better options

I would have put money on Fu-Te Ni if I were a betting man. Ni’s K per inning stats are almost as sexy as his ERA in Toledo, but that doesn’t mean Dolsi’s lack of K’s is a deal breaker.

Call me crazy, but throwing strikes and getting guys out is what’s most important, especially with a pitcher who may not be pitching in high pressure situations as you believe will be the case with Dolsi. If he can throw strikes and get guys out consistently, who cares about his inability to strike guys out at a K/inning clip.

by Detroit4lyfe on Jun 22, 2009 3:31 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

The problem is, when he’s not striking guys out, he’s giving up hits. Sure, he’s not giving up the free base. But he’s giving opposing batters plenty of opportunity to earn their own way onto the base. 32 hits in 31 innings, and with a BABIP that only a couple of points higher than his career average. I’m just not sure if his stuff is going to translate to the majors any better this time than the last time we saw him.

by Kurt Mensching on Jun 22, 2009 3:59 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Dolsi’s not a K guy. He never really has been. In Dolsi’s 42 games in the bigs last year, only 20% of the outs he recorded were strikeouts. And the one year he was even close to your desired K/inning (2007 with A+, 44 Ks in 51.2 IP) his BABIP was no better than it has been this year. In fact, it was worse at .325 (compared to this year’s .315).

His inability to strike guys out is not the problem. There are a ton of factors that go into a guys effectiveness and it definitely helps to have a guy who has the ability to K a guy at any given time, but with Dolsi I’d say his control, keeping the ball down, and his ability to keep hitters off balance is much more important than his ability, or lack thereof, to K a guy.

Look at Porcello. Would you say he’s having a pretty good year? He K’s guys less frequently than Dolsi does. Only 18% of his outs recorded this season have been strikeouts. (Porcello is the first guy I thought of off the top of my head as not being a big time K guy, yet still effective, so do not mistaken me for comparing the two’s talent level. That would be asinine, obviously.)

I don’t know if Dolsi is much better than what he was last year, but a 3.97 ERA is not awful. It was his awful WHIP that contributed to the 3.97 ERA anyway, so if he can work on keeping the freebies off the bases, I think he’ll be alright. I still don’t like the move as I was excited to see Fu-Te Ni (or others) get the call, but I’ll live with it if Dolsi can be as effective as he has been in his last 10+ IP with Toledo.

by Detroit4lyfe on Jun 22, 2009 8:54 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

But you just cherry picked 10 innings with Toledo and expect him to be that effective the whole time? You know you can’t do that.

He is essentially the definition of a “replacement level player” and given there are better options in the organization and Dolsi has not proven himself to all that interesting of a pitcher since his demotion last year or until 10 appearances in June this year, I am simply not in favor of it.

by Kurt Mensching on Jun 22, 2009 10:54 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

I didn't say I expect him to be that effective

I said I’ll live with it if he can be that effective, which is basically saying “I hope he can be that effective.” Big difference. I know 10 innings is a small sample size, but if Dolsi is the “replacement level player” you’re speaking of maybe the those 10 innings are more important than one might think. Perhaps the Tigers are getting him while he’s hot and don’t plan on keeping him up very long.

And I was addressing your “Right now, I’m less concerned about Dolsi’s control and more concerned about his inability to strike guys out” comment because I disagreed with it. I think Dolsi’s K ratio is irrelevant to any success he might have.

This is the fourth time I’ve said now that I would have expected someone else/rather had someone else get the call up. I was probably just as surprised as you to see it was Dolsi.

That being said, Dolsi’s not the worst guy that could have been called up. As I said, his 3.97 ERA in 42 games last year was not especially awful and what catches my eye the most. It’s his WHIP of 1.61 that stands out to me as awful. His knack for putting runners on kills him (as it does with most pitchers) and therefore, if he cuts down his walks and keeps the ball down he might be more than alright as a reliever, regardless of how many guys he strikes out.

by Detroit4lyfe on Jun 23, 2009 3:28 AM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

But I completely agree with you

that basing it off of 10 innings when there were other options, doesn’t make much sense and I’m not entirely in favor of.

by Detroit4lyfe on Jun 23, 2009 3:33 AM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

That’s the kinda stat I’m talking about. No freebies, throw strikes.

by VegasTigers on Jun 22, 2009 3:16 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Dolsi was definitely not our best option.

We have one effective lefty, and we need another. Ni seemed like the obvious choice — and plus, he uses a blue glove.

I am very surprised and impressed with the new starting rotation order. Figaro looks like he could have quality stuff for a while, and if that is the case, what a starting 4 that would be huh?

In writing that, I realized what a young rotation we have. Has to be one of the youngest around right?

I like their sound

I go through periods of listening to them and burning out and listening to them again.

I like the rock/electronic combination quiet a bit. And did you know they’re a Christian band? That always amazed me but you listen to the lyrics totally different and see it.

by Kurt Mensching on Jun 22, 2009 11:02 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

I knew they were formed from bits of a Christian band

but no, I didn’t exactly know that. They’re so different from all the other cookie-cutter Christian bands out there who do everything like Relient K, I don’t think I would have guessed that.

I guess I like that they don’t sound like much else. They have the pop/rock aspect, sure, but also some hints of jazz, a kind of raw ethereal sense to their sound too.

by demondeaconsbaseball on Jun 22, 2009 11:14 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Well, this will be hard to explain

They are pretty much a straight-up driving rock Brit trio, but made with a lot of sweet guitar work and electronics (you know, keyboards and outer space sounds). They have a kind of dark mood about them, however they are almost always high energy. Good music for stadiums, as it is big and symphonic. Some songs have good piano work too. The singer, Matt Bellamy, is a falsetto most of the time and can really sing powerfully. Drums are really driving and they have a really good bassist. Hope that’s detailed enough, haha.

One of my favorite bands. If you want a sample, try these:

Starlight – http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Pgum6OT_VH8
Knights of Cydonia – http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=G_sBOsh-vyI
Hysteria (live, just for kicks) – http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OZR_UkJV-wE
Butterflies and Hurricanes (live again, I love them live) – http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LViy46GeMe0&feature=related

If you like any of that, get some energy and pick up their last two or three records. Phenomenal stuff IMO.

Sounds pretty good from the links… course, I’ve always been a sucker for electronics- big NIN fan, just discovered Powerman 3000, idolize Tom Morello as a guitar player (sure, it’s not exactly electronics, but it’s pretty nifty sounding).

Trying to rally support

The Armando Galarraga bandwagon crashed and burned a month ago, and it’s time to give this guy the time to sort it out somewhere else, he’s costing the team too much, when we’ve got a qualified starter who has had success at this level sitting in our bullpen. Remember what Miner did in place of Maroth? Imagine what a boost that would be to us right now.

I can’t be alone in this, the argument against shipping out our only qualified middle reliever is week, plenty of options in AAA, my personal favorite being French, but with as much as Galarraga is costing the team, we’re virtually forfeiting his starts anymore, the time for reckoning has come, and we already have the answer.

He was a hero for us last year and started this year fine…
But I think you can only take what we’ve been getting for so long, he still gave up 3 ER and 4 runs total in 4 innings. Yes he looked better, but Miner came in and threw 2 1/3 scoreless and only gave up one hit.

In my mind it’s not a question of whether or not Armando is capable of it, he’s more than proven he is, it’s a question of whether or not he can handle it right now. And I don’t think he is at the moment. Give him a break, and let him return to form.

mlbtraderumors

Had an interesting Tigers related post today. Most of it covered the “Ordonezgate” and the news on Gullien sounded promising. What threw me though was the comment that regardless of Gullien’s health the Tigers are looking to trade for a power bat. My question is who is out there and what do we have to give up? I remember the Brad Hawpe rumors but given the fact that the Rockies have climbed back into wild card contention I don’t see that happening. The only other name I can think of is Matt Holliday and my concern there is that he would be over priced. Any thoughts?

uh...Barry Bonds?

or more realistically, what about Frank Thomas? He had been DHing the last several years so he’s got to be pretty healthy. I guess I don’t really want any of those guys but Thomas is certainly a doable rent-a-player.

I think he officially retired

not a 100% sure on that one but I know he is working for Comcast in Chicago during the broadcasts of Cubs/White Soxes games. I also know he has said that he is the kind of hitter who needs 100 AB’s to get warmed up and I am not sure taking a chance on him is the best idea. Of course, I would prefer that option versus trading any true prospects we still have.

by Tagne13 on Jun 22, 2009 9:10 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

funny you mention Kenny

I have a friend that’s a Tiger fan and I keep telling that I believe Kenny and DD have a deal worked out that as long as Kenny stays in shape then the Tigers would look at him as an option should a rotation regular get hurt. Kenny doesn’t want to pitch any where else and in all seriousness should something happen to Jackson, Verlander, Porcello or Gallaraga and they were to miss the rest of the season then the Tigers would sign Rogers and fill the hole in the rotation with him. There is nothing substantial to support this of course, just one guys crazy theory.

Adam Dunn?

He’s 30, and he’s on the Nats… With the right incentives it might be possible. Something like a Thomas and some lesser prospects might intrigue a team as mired in rebuilding as the Nats.

Don’t we all wish, I can’t realistically see this happening

The time for reckoning has come, and we already have the answer

by Vreeland2 on Jun 22, 2009 9:14 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

I thought about that too

The Nats are out of it, Dunn was not happy that he only got a 2 year deal at 10million per (reasonable for a 40 hr guy) and it was with a team he didn’t really want to sign with. Plus, everyone seems to agree he fits the mold of a career DHer from here on out. He does strikeout a lot but his production helps you tolerate it. If we don’t have to break the farm I would be all for it.

Dunn wants out, but the Nats won't let him

for anything short of half or farm system…. Thomas, Raburn, and a pitcher maybe…. Ni possibly? I’d hate to do it, but he’s stil lgot a lot of good years ahead of him as a DH if he stays healthy, it might be worth looking at, depending on how our deeper prospects work out.
He could be our offensive Jackson-style deal.

by Vreeland2 on Jun 22, 2009 9:48 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

If that were really true

those 3 names right there, I absolutely would pull the trigger. Raburn will never be more than a career utility guy and thus would be more valuable on an NL team, Ni hasn’t proven anything yet until he can pitch his way into the Majors, and Clete would be tough to part with because of his D but obviously Dunn is the better major-leaguer.

Kenny Rogers

In his day he was one of the best pitchers around, but his days are done. I have not missed seeing him on the mound. Last year he could barely go four innings without looking like he was gonna fall over dead.

Armando doesn’t look like he’s dying after 3 innings, he usually just looks like he’s ready to cry (lately anyway) lol

I was just throwing names

The Nats want young pieces who could be future guys, I think Clete could have leverage, Ni has just been the name on my mind lately, we’ve got any number of decent ptchers, and like you said raburn is utility for us, but he’s shown potential and could sweeten the deal without hurting us

it hurts me to do it I’m as big a maggs fan as anyone, but a name like Magglio’s, even with this years numbers, might make it happen.

Maggs

Not sure if this link will work, but Leland is still not decided if Magglio will play tomorrow. Sure doesn’t sound like it.

It worked

Who wants to take bets that Maggs won’t start tomorrow against the Mets?

You're probably right

I saw him on the news earlier saying pretty much what I just read. Never can tell what Leyland might do. When he does come back, I am almost thinking this will be Magg’s “last hooray” so to speak.

I figure they’ll see how he does when he comes off of the bench so they can evaluate his trade value. I would really like to see him get out there tomorrow, or the next day with some real pop in his bat.

I really don’t think he’ll finish the season in Detroit. Too much talk and too many rumors for too many weeks. I have been a fan since we acquired him and will probably follow the rest of his career until he is “done”… where ever he goes.

true

too much talk, too many rumors and too much money not to consider this seriously. I don’t think they have any intention of letting him get his at bats in, not unless he comes out slugging.

fans won’t like it if he GIDP, first pitch swing, SO or misses a ball in right field, either.

I love him, no matter what. But the team comes first.

Truly If It would help him hit better, I’d say DO IT! I’d go into mourning but if it helps the team then I’d be all for it. Yeah, I know I’m waffling, but homers flying off that bat would look better to me than those locks flying under that hat, at this point.

Though I did mark out huge for the “Arise, Rodimus Prime”. Ah, to be 11 again.

I had to explain to my fiancee for the first movie how big a deal Optimus Prime is to many guys my age. Not looking all that forward to the second flick, though.

I love the guy… he helped bring the tigers back from the dark times…. I don’t want to do it, and I guarantee this deal won’t happen.

me either

I was rooting for LSU to tie it in the ninth and then Texas not to score.

I didn’t really have an opinion who I wanted to win until the Texas guy leaned into a pitch to get hit and that annoyed me so I started rooting for LSU. That could change if they annoy me.

It’s too hot and I’m irritable, haha

by Kurt Mensching on Jun 22, 2009 11:06 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

haha.... yeah, i have no preference either

Its almost getting hard to watch though. Pitching is bad enough to get into a huge jam, hitters can’t come through in the clutch, pitcher gets out of the jam, repeat…

Sure hope we've jumped ship

on the whole “lose to the best, win against the worst” thing we’ve done for stretches before.

Although I’m sure that’s what most fans think about their teams occasionally.

But yes, we should win the next 3 series, or something is off.

We are catching both the Cubs and Stros at the wrong time.

Cubs come in with the top of the rotation and are starting to play well. Stros just played great up at the Dome.

I’d feel great about 6 of 9, myself.

So when does everyone think the KC blog will forfeit the season?

I was checking out the Indian’s blog and they have all decided the season is over, and basically only us or the Twinkies will win.

Which is fun, sad and interesting to see, considering we thought similarly at points last season. My question is, when do y’all think we’ll see similar posts from KC? I think in 2 weeks or so.

by Kmann on Jun 22, 2009 11:58 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

the royals should have forfeit by now, too. they’re just not good.

Sox Im not sure about. I think they could go either way, and their pitching has been better recently. Twins obviously are always dangerous

You can try this

www(dot)atdhe(dot)net

It was pretty reliable with the hockey games all season (since the NHL saw fit to be ass-stupid about televising games on channels that weren’t blacked out in home markets). They carry some baseball games, too – I don’t know how wide the selection is, but it’s worth a shot.
