Miner Starting, and my answer for Middle Relief
I'm reading around several Tigers blogs, and it seems like the big question is, how do we upgrade the rotation? I'm on the get rid of Armando bandwagon, and I think the answer is Zach Miner. Think back to a couple years ago what he did as a starter in place of Maroth, and in starts since. He's been as solid as anyone, and a good middle reliever for us this year. I think the time has come to give him the ball and see if he can earn a spot. Which leaves the question of who can be the middle reliever, since Robertson has proven he can't handle it, and Miner is our only legitimate option there.
My friends, I have the answer, and you've already seen him. Lucas French, he did decent in his MLB debut, and he's posting solid numbers as a starter down in AAA... in fact, I'm not entirely against him being the starter, but with a pair of rookies already in the rotation I think we need to go with someone with starting experience. Miner brings that to the table, and I think Armando is running out of time fast, Miner is already here, still having success in his current role. Give him a shot, and bring in French for middle relief, option Armando down, or finally cut the money bleeding out of Robertson.

I had the answer a while ago
and it’s only now starting to be realized…
If I were manager:
Bring up Dusty for Dane…….DONE
Drop Willis outright…….SORT OF DONE…….the fact he is unwilling to take a minor league assignment further strengthens this decision
Swap Galarraga and Miner’s roles…….still waiting on this
With Willis gone, bring up French……still waiting on this
I’d rather see Ni given a shot with the team than Dolsi right now
Cut Nate and bring Perry back up………not going to happen with the $ tied up but one can dream
Try to trade Magglio for some prospects………becoming more unlikely now that he has been given “time off” and his trade value prob took an even bigger hit
Try and trade for one more bat…..doesn’t have to be an All-Star caliber player, just someone who can knock the snot out of the ball
Sign Ben Sheets, let him continue to rehab till he’s healthy and then give him a tryout a’la Freddy Garcia of last year
My roster would look like this:
C – Gerald Laird
1B – Miguel Cabrera
2B – Placido Polanco
3B – Brandon Inge
SS – Adam Everett
LF – Marcus Thames
CF – Curtis Granderson
RF – Magglio Ordonez (if not traded)
DH – [insert 2nd tier player acquired in trade here]
Bench – Ramon Santiago
Bench – Dusty Ryan
Bench – Josh Anderson
Bench – ‘Dapper’ Don Kelly
SP – Justin Verlander
SP – Edwin Jackson
SP – Rick Porcello
SP – Zach Miner
SP – Alfredo Figaro
CL – Fernando Rodney
RP – Bobby Seay
RP – Ryan Perry
RP – Lucas French
RP – Joel Zumaya
RP – Fu-Te Ni
RP – Brandon Lyon

And if Maggs were somehow traded for prospects..
Bring Clete or Raburn back up…..preferably Clete, never been a real huge Raburn fan.

No way Ben Sheets signs with Detroit
Not as long as his hometown Rangers are in contention.

Impossibility
for Maggs to be traded.

Not impossible
How about to the Mets for a AAA fringe prospect? How about to the Braves for one of their surplus starters and cash considerations? How about the Tigers take a bad contract from someone else- Jarrod Washburn came to mind, but I dunno if Seattle would be willing to consider it.
It’s certainly not impossible- some GM’s will be willing to acquire him in the hopes he comes back. It is, however, very difficult.

Whoops
Forgot about the Reds- they desperately need OBP and are in contention- Ordonez might help them out a lot.

his contract is
worth too much. Highly unlikely anyone would pay the value on it . More likely they release him, if anything at all.

I like that look
I think if Maggs can get it back together he’s well suited for that DH role, se eif we can’t get a second tier right fielder who has some pop in his bat and a little bit of defense. Lord knows there are plenty out there.
The time for reckoning has come, and we already have the answer

I'm also going on the assumption Guillen won't be back this season
Otherwise I’d say he could DH…..if he were able to get his bat going somehow

Is it just me, or....
Does Zach Miner remind any one else of Clay Aiken?
Tagne, great assessment and line-up. I agree that we do not need a top-tier batter, hence why I mention Corey Hart from Milwaukee. Also, I like the Ben Sheets idea, signing him only means we retain his rights as MLB insurance will be picking up the tab (i.e. workman’s comp).
Any thoughts on prospects or low-level starters/position players you think we’d be able to get for Maggs?

It'd be pretty sweet if we could get the SS from Tampa
Not Zobrist…the other one. I know Tampa is LOADED with prospects and they could use an upgrade over Gabe Gross/Gabe Kapler/Pat Burrell…a struggling Maggs is still probably better than all of those guys

Do we need a SS, though?
I think Everett and Santiago are doing an exceptional job at SS, and would like to see the Tigers sign Everett to another year.
Is this kid, Brignac, a better prospect than Iorge?
by jryno on Jun 22, 2009 11:11 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
YES
Absolutely, unequivocally yes. If Friedman accepts Maggs for Brignac, Dombrowski shoudl win Executive of the Millennium. Briggy’s got a solid bat with a lot of pop and is defensively average to above, with an improving glove. This was a top prospect in the loaded Tampa Bay system a few years ago- he’s been struggling a little lately, but he’s still got boatloads of potential.
And I’m not entirely sold on Iorg. His plate discipline is garbage, which will hinder his growth as a player. Frankly, I see Alex Avilla as a much better postion player prospect in the long term.

Last I saw, Iorg was hitting .219
against Double A pitching

Prospect...as in the 'future'
Everett and Santiago are the ‘present’. And I truly don’t see them being the future of this franchise. Santiago is best used as a bench player anyways.

I agree...
I guess that I was thinking immediate impact and not next year, or a couple of years from now. Overall though, I still think that the Tigers should sign Everett to another year. He’s a solid SS and would be a great role model for a young SS.
Agree about Santiago, his numbers drop drastically if he plays more. Wierd how that is, but its the same with Thames.

Regression to the mean
Rather unfortunately… both of them are better suited as utility players.
Well, not so much Thames, who I think should start against all lefties and mediocre righties.
