Game 72: Cubs at Tigers
Chicago Cubs at Detroit Tigers, Jun 25, 2009 1:05 PM EDT
Ted Lilly (7-4, 3.04) vs.
Armando Galarraga (3-7, 5.62), 1:05 p.m. EST
Can the Tigers push their winning streak to seven games, and their record to 10 games over .500, by finishing off an undefeated homestand before hitting the road? It's probably not going to be easy, with today's pitching match-up.
Armando Galarraga has now gone 10 straight starts without earning a win. He's pitched a total of six innings in his last two appearances, allowing eight runs. And he'll probably have to go at least six today, with the Tigers using six relievers (three of whom pitched on consecutive nights) in last night's win. But in the first two games of this series, the Cubs have squandered several scoring opportunities. Could they finally break through against Galarraga?
Ted Lilly might also make it difficult for the Tigers to provide any run support. While he's only earned a win in two of his last five outings, he's held the opposition to two runs or fewer in four of those games. Lilly is 3-3 with a 4.40 ERA in seven road starts this season, but allowed only one earned run in his most recent appearances at Houston and at Atlanta. In 690 appearances against left-handed pitching this season, the Tigers are batting .268/.346/.444 with 22 homers and 83 RBIs.
Placido Polanco and Gerald Laird get the afternoon off, with Ramon Santiago and Dusty Ryan filling in at second base and catcher, respectively. And Ryan Raburn gets the start in left field, against the left-handed Lilly.

Day game
It’s a 10:00am start for me!?! Gotta peak at game behind my work application on ’puter. Hopefully go catch Dickerson on XM radio on break time
I might go to hell for laughing at this but this is too funny
From @bigleaguestew
Worst Grandy question…
“Has anyone confused you for Curtis Pride & started yelling obscenities thinking you couldn’t hear them?”
If you didn’t already know, Bigleaguestew was taking questions from fans to ask Curtis Granderson for a Q&A piece
Motown String Music- SB Nation's Detroit Pistons Blog
It made me laugh too
not sure about the hell part….
I'm so ahead of my time, my parents haven't met yet
93 degrees!
I just got a tweet that it’s 93 at game time in the D. Damn, you guys beat us today, It’s 91 in Vegas right now!
It IS frickin' hot out there
Even out here in the cozy confines of Ann Arbor.

This looks like a classic Jim Leyland “Awww, F*(&@ it” game. Hell, they’re even screwing around with the broadcast.

The matchup today certainly doesn't look promising
Here’s hoping that we can get something going offensively, and Armando can turn things around
How about an isolation cam on Leyland
for the entire time Galarraga is in there?

Mario, stop it
This “he’s earned a leash based on last year” stuff ended a month ago, at least.

Son of a bitch
I didn’t realize today was a friggin day game!
Looks like my 5th game in a row I’m missing :-(
I was all pumped up about watching it at the bar tonight
Hopefully the Red Sox are on ESPN or something
I'd rather conclusively make that decision based on
his performance in Toledo.
by StringTheory on Jun 25, 2009 1:17 PM EDT up reply actions
I definitely think he needs lots more time in Toledo
before I can make a real assessment. Like a couple months, at least.
good god
give the french man a shot already

Tigers Live needs a warning

What was the bench looking at?
I thought it hit the rail live and didn’t need the slow-mo.
by StringTheory on Jun 25, 2009 1:27 PM EDT up reply actions
he hasn't been getting fooled a whole lot
but has been popping up just about everything … he doesn’t get paid to play small ball so I guess that just comes with the terrtiory

And answering one of my questions from earlier today
I just saw Dontrelle in the dugout, chatting with Leyland

This is why I hate replay
Are you going to use it or not?
by Ian Casselberry on Jun 25, 2009 1:28 PM EDT reply actions
Yeah
You have it. Use it. What does it hurt other than taking a few minutes of everyone’s time.
by Detroit4lyfe on Jun 25, 2009 1:29 PM EDT up reply actions
He would have gotten a double, but I think it went across the foul line and a fan picked it up...
He was already at second base when it happened…
if Lilly gets to a full count
it aint pretty for the hitter – opposing hitters have a .037 average against him in a full count situation this year according to BR
that was a nice break
I love it when the Cubs are lazy
Hope this isn't a bad omen
but Armando has yet to win a game in which he has allowed a home run
What's the Tigers' record when Ramon homers?

Hey, thanks
Disappointing result, unfortunately

at least we wont beat a record

Offense gets you runs...
… just give up right back. Idiot.
Ohio Tiger
your Razor Ramon post earlier distracted me for several minutes after a youtube search haha I used to like that guy
He got doubled up...
Ball was hit really far back… looked like a HR he went to second, and then went REALLY slow back to first
Wow! He looked terrible on the first two pitches,
and he crushed the curveball like he knew he was getting it.
Everyone cut their hair!!
Oh, man – when’s the last time he pulled a ball like that?
by Ian Casselberry on Jun 25, 2009 2:15 PM EDT reply actions
That picture is on my wall
I can still remember the sound of the ball off the bat.

I like Mario's math there....
HR by Santiago + HR by Ordonez = 2 HRs! One more and that’s 3!
That’s basically what he said…

Incredible how Raburn has stepped up lately
I was ready to write him off as a career mud hen, but he’s actually shown some value at the big league level recently
Everett could be the white pixie from Chapelle's Show
I'm so ahead of my time, my parents haven't met yet
no kidding!
I understand why it has to be there for the sake of the standard def broadcast, but it just looks ridiculous floating in the middle of the screen like that
I think, from now on, we all need to make a commitment
not to call a player an overrated defender based on the very first series he ever wears a Tigers uniform.
Everett’s got one hell of a slick glove.
I got my negative view of Everett from the complete lack of a bat he showed early on….he’s come around, and I’m slowly warming up to the guy…
Official BYB Juju Consultant...now accepting rally creature applications!
After the Tornoto series to start the year
there were plenty of people saying that his glove was overrated. Obviously not the case, I’d say.
I have a feeling that we wouldn't be happy with it at all though
if our offense had only scored 1 or 2 runs to this point
LEE
i think you put Lee on intentionally in his last AB to break the streak. its the same as bunting late in the game to break up a no-hitter.
Dear Associated Press
Please have taken a photo of Galarraga hugging Knapp in the dugout.

Just walkd in
from an interview at a Casino. Oh, my, am I kinda surprised by our score. Wasn’t expecting too much from Armando, but looks like held up pretty good. C’mon Tigers!!

Everago
I like the Everett/Santiago combo at SS and 2B A LOT. Whether or not Sizemore’s ready next year, there’s no reason to resign Polanco.
yeah, decent enough that I actually typed out “Lyon for closer” at some point last week, and then had to think about seriously for a minute….this was rigth after Fernando struggled in back to back games, walked the bases loaded, etc….I think he’s better off without the closer pressure, though…

couple of poor calls against us today
and Jim barely gave the Ump a whiff of his cigarette breath
I think
umbrellas should not be allowed into the stadium… Always pisses me off… sorry just had to say it
It's pretty clear to me
they don’t want to delay at this point. I’m expecting a wide strikezone in the ninth.
are the cubs trying to wait for the weather to delay it or what?
this game came to a complete crawl this half inning
Nice victory by Everett
Getting a walk after a long at bat helps the whole situation
Tigers
must lead the league in blowing Sac Fly chances….and moving runners over. But there pretty good at getting out of Jams themselves.

I LOVE THESE GUYS!!!!!
I sat in the sweltering heat, I have a sunburn and my friend, she almost passed out. lol But it was worth it. Maggs brought tears to my eyes. I felt in coming, I told my friend when Maggs homers, I’m gonna need a tissue……..And the best part of all is, he sent into the opposite field…. and another tidbit, he also changed his entrance music to some hip-hop beat, couldn’t tell you what it was and I don’t care. It worked and I was happier than life to see that sweet swing. Welcome back…Magglio
