Game 74: Tigers at Astros
Detroit Tigers at Houston Astros, Jun 27, 2009 7:05 PM EDT
Alfredo Figaro (1-0, 3.60) vs.
Felipe Paulino (1-4, 6.18), 7:05 p.m. EST
Last night's loss ended the Tigers' seven-game winning streak. Can they hop back on the win train tonight? Or is this the beginning of a different kind of streak?
For the Astros, Felipe Paulino is making his first start after recovering from a strained groin that put him on the 15-day DL. He's winless in all eight of his starts this season, with his other three appearances coming in relief.
Alfredo Figaro makes his second start for the Tigers since being called up from Triple-A Toledo Double-A Erie. He's pitching tonight after switching places with Justin Verlander in the rotation to space out the starting rotation more evenly between veterans and rookies.
In his first start, last Saturday against the Brewers, Figaro allowed two runs and eight hits in five innings, adding seven strikeouts. Leaving the ball up in the strike zone got him into a little bit of trouble at Comerica Park. If he does the same tonight, Minute Maid Park's smaller dimensions could punish him.
Magglio Ordonez is out of the lineup tonight, with Don Kelly taking over for him in right field and batting fifth. Ramon Santiago gets the start at shortstop.

Not to nitpick,
but Figaro was called up from AA Erie, not Toledo.

I figure I’d let you know that the Tigers are the main baseball feature on Yahoo! Sports today. They’re G-r-r-r-eat! http://sports.yahoo.com/mlb;_ylt=AnG1IajhKd0XIkn0fEUWRmg5nYcB
I love it when we get coverage. It makes me so proud to be a fan.
Finally
a nice uplifting story about the Detroit boys

Do you like Arabic food?
If you do you should go to Exotic Bakeries on Plymouth Rd….the few months I lived there I would get food there because it was only like a half mile from where I was staying
I dunno, it could work
Or, considering a ton of Tigers nicknames end in “y”, we could go with Figgy.

Well, they had the first original guys
and then they left and were replaced by the 4 you know and love.
SO what is the actual reason
Laird left the game.

How was that rundown scored?
Via Mr. Beck:
Inge’s diving tag on Michael Bourn’s backside completes the 9-3-6-4-3-6-5 putout. Matsui had long since score

115 this month as a team. That's not relative to any other team. It's just our monthly total.

another in a line of high ERA / recently off the DL pitchers making the Tigers look silly.
At first you could think it was some sort of coincidence, but this pattern is really starting to make wonder if it’s not.

Matt Palmer came in with like a 7 ERA in triple-A and did well
Ervin Santana came off the DL and carved them up, his best game of the season.

So he went with Santiago against a right handed pitcher. Nothing wrong with that. He went with Kelly instead of a guy who hit three ground balls and stranded 7 runners yesterday. And Laird had back spasms.

But did you ever pay attention to that all star commercial?
Ryan Howard is holding Derek Jeter on first. The St Louis arch passes over and swipes them up. The fans look up. The Yankees pitcher looks up as he takes the throw from the catcher as the arch floats away.

It seems that any game in which the Tigers lose and leave a bunch of guys on base inevitably gets followed up by a game in which they get totally dominated by the opposing pitcher.
