Game 76: Tigers at Athletics

Detroit Tigers at Oakland Athletics, Jun 29, 2009 10:05 PM EDT

  Rick Porcello (8-4, 3.55) vs.   Brett Anderson (3-7, 5.74), 10:05 p.m. EST

The Tigers have lost six of their last nine road games, but that was during Interleague Play.  Enough of the National League.  Bring back the American League!  And Detroit might be bumping into just the right team as they resume their AL schedule.  The Athletics welcome the Tigers into Oakland nursing a five-game losing streak.

For those A's, Brett Anderson is pitching tonight after being pushed back from Friday to rest a tired arm.  He's winless in his past three starts.  And in those 14.2 innings, he's given up 14 runs and 23 hits.  Anderson faced the Tigers when the A's visited Detroit in mid-May, and gave up nine runs in 3.1 innings.  Only three of those runs were earned, however, as every Oakland infielder ended up committing an error.  In five starts at home, Anderson is 1-4 with a 5.52 ERA.

Rick Porcello took just his second no-decision of the season in his last start.  Despite allowing seven hits and a season-high four walks in his five innings, a struggling Chicago Cubs offense could only score two runs against him.  That gave the Tigers the opportunity to win the game in the later innings.  Porcello has thrown 97 pitches in his past two outings, which makes you wonder if he might be watched a bit more closely tonight.  The rookie has been impressive on the road, compiling a 5-2 record and 3.02 ERA in seven starts.

It's not necessarily the time that gets me...

It’s the weird things that seem to happen on the west coast.

Alright, everyone be honest

Who is staying up for the entire game? (I will not be)

I root for the Tigers, Pistons, Red Wings and yes, the Lions.

I’m actually wide awake right now, as I wrestled a new lawnmower out of my trunk, plugged it in to charge, went to Home Depot to get an outdoor extension cord for my trimmer, and then did my grocery shopping.

But who knows what state I will be in after another 90 minutes or so.

I'm guessing that Jason Beck is off for this series?

I always appreciate Beck, but never more than when he’s not covering a series. Pre-game coverage is like driving a car at night without headlights.

Poor Indians.

Perez, who they got for Derosa, is already giving up runs in his first appearance.

because I loathe them so much.

Welcome to Detroit>>Where the weak are killed and eaten.

I like when division rivals lose, obviously.

But I still feel bad for the fans who have to witness such disastrous baseball like we did last year.

by StringTheory on Jun 29, 2009 9:37 PM EDT up reply actions

So...it's basically business as usual for the Indians' bullpen

I’ve had the game on while waiting for our game to start, and while I seriously dislike the Indians, the White Sox ARE closer to us in the standings.

fake throw by G$ to get the runner stealing second

tricked the guy at 3 to run for home and look like an idiot.

by wepri31 on Jun 29, 2009 10:39 PM EDT up reply actions

Laird faked him out and caught him off third, tossed back to Inge, and Porcello finished off the rundown by tagging him out at home.

by Baroque on Jun 29, 2009 10:39 PM EDT up reply actions

Laird faked a throw to second on the steal, Suzuki was caught too far from third in a rundown, probably trying to steal home, yeah

by Kurt Mensching on Jun 29, 2009 10:40 PM EDT up reply actions

Okay, so Laird has the ball, right, and then he went to the dugout, however, unfortunately, the inning wasn’t over and they called a technical foul on us and Laird got a red card.

How about that?

I don’t get the soccer stuff. That’s why I wondered why they called it stoppage time when I could see the clock still running.

Maybe someday this state will heal

but until then, I’ll stick with slightly less expensive schooling.

by Kmann on Jun 29, 2009 11:06 PM EDT up reply actions

makes sense

I’ve seen people get a good education at inexpensive schools and shitty educations at very expensive prestigious schools. Bottom line is if a student goes out drinking five nights a week and does all the work half-assed, their degree won’t be worth anything – and if they apply themselves, work hard, and study more than party, no matter what school they go to they will have a better education.

College students get out of their education based on what they put into it, pretty much.
