"The Tigers lead the Central, but we've just seen them for a couple of days and their lineup is decidedly underwhelming. Detroit is the only team in the Central over .500. The Tigers don't hit anymore. Magglio Ordonez is doing what Ortiz is doing, just in a smaller market. Anybody worried about the Tigers in October? No. The Twins, maybe. The Tigers, no."

Dan who?

Fuck him.

The Red Sox ARE a good team though. But yeah, Papi looked MUCh worse then Maggs at the plate. On a couple of swings there I thought he was going to fall over he whiffed so hard.

Can you blame him?

He’s a beat writer for the Sox. His exposure to the Tigers are these last two games. We’ve looked like absolute dogshit. I’ve been busy doing other things these last two nights and I’ve seen a whole lot of nothing offensively aside from Grandy’s standup triple last night.

Don't shoot the messenger...

Just because we fans don’t like his message, doesn’t mean he doesn’t have a point. We’ve had a nice run with a lot of these young guys and a hot start by Inge, but there’s a reason most of these guys were all in AAA ball before the season started: they’re not major leaguers yet and they cannot be relied upon to produce consistently. We’ll need our veteran bats to produce if we’re going to compete over the full season.

Our pitching has been great, but it is obvious to any objective observer that we have trouble scoring runs at times and that IS our weakness at the moment.

Well Put...

A hefty team like the Red Sox is as concerned about us as we probably would be about the Rangers…“Nice team, kids. Good luck next year!”

We’ve had some very nice stretches with excellent starting pitching leading the charge. What happens if Verlander and Jackson throw a month of 3.5-4era ball? And Porcello starts skipping starts to keep his innings down? And Galarraga continues flirting with mediocrity? And Willis is an absolute coin-flip?

I’m not relying on our bats in that situation, it’s impossible. It’s funny…last year everyone said there weren’t enough role players. Now it seems we have too many. I love the flexibility of this lineup, I love the speed, and I love the defense. If 1-5 on this order does not show up almost every night, though, we are in trouble over the long haul.

I’m not trying to sound the alarm or anything, I just think it is wise to consider the holes that Henning felt he saw two weeks ago in this team. Everyone (including me) thought he was being a raggety old crotch. As of right now he’s looking like a visionary. Let’s just hope that Marcus comes back hitting a home run every .7AB, Bonderman has learned a thing or two about a thing or two from his mentor Kenny Rogers, and Carlos takes the time to get healthy and come back and hit us some doubles with RISP.

I'm not the biggest fan

of Shaughnessy and his point is half-baked.

Ortiz: bad April (OPS .623), worse May (.520)… hasn’t/won’t be the same without Man-o-Ram.
Ordonez: bad April (OPS .650), respectable May (.777)… Maybe he’s on the decline, but the case isn’t closed like Ortiz.

This is from a commenter on Jason Beck's blog...

…but it makes the same point, with a lot of young hitters in our lineup, consistency will be an issue and right now, most of the team is slumping.

These are the recent track records of your major league tigers hitters.

Anderson – 8 for 45 last 18 games – .177
Thomas – 10 for 55 last 16 games – .182
Santiago – 5 for 27 last 8 games – .185
Cabrera – 5 for 27 last 7 games – .185
Polanco – 7 for 37 last 9 games – .189
Larish – 7 for 35 last 16 games – .200
Everett – 5 for 24 last 9 games – .208

Don’t those numbers exhibit that consistency has nothing to do with whether you’re young? Thomas is slumping right alongside Cabrera and Raburn is hot right alongside Granderson. Young hitters just seem more inconsistent because their hot streaks and slumps have a bigger effect on our perceived idea of their true talent level. I don’t think they’re any more inconsistent than an equally talented, more experienced player.

"underwhelming"

might be going a bit too far.

“could use another bat” I’d certainly agree with.

Could

a healthy Carlos Gullien and a healthy Marcus Thames be those bats? Plus, Maggs situation is not as dire as Ortiz. Maggs just had a 16 game hitting streak and is at least hitting above .200. And would anyone be shocked if he and Polanco finish the year hitting above .300. I wouldn’t be. Throw in Grandy finishing above.275 and Gullien being a contributor from July til the end of the year and things look pretty good.
As for Big Dan, everyone out there right now seems to enjoy taking shots at the AL central, well good for them. The Tigers are currently 4 games above .500 with no Bonderman, practically no Gullien or Thames and Maggs, Polanco and Grandy all hitting below their career averages. Let’s all just wait and see how this plays out :)

It really doesn't matter what team Shaughnessy comments on, he never says anything good.

He is one of those baseball writers who has been at it for way too long and hates the sport.

Although I do feel the same way about the team, I don’t think the Tigers are making deep runs in the playoffs, but I thought the exact same thing in 2006.

I root for the Tigers, Pistons, Red Wings and yes, the Lions.

Putz, and I don't mean J.J.

That’s just an unbelievably stupid thing to say for a guy who’s been around baseball that long. Teams get hot. Teams get cold. Making a judgment on what a team is going to do in September or October based on what they did against you in early June is remarkably dumb and a very good way to look like an idiot in four months.

The Sox took advantage of two rookie pitchers in the first game and then beat up on the back of the rotation. That has almost nothing to do with what they would see in the playoffs. Sure, the Tigers will still have to hit but like I said, teams get hot. Teams get cold.

I wonder what he said about the Tigers when they beat the Sox going into the All Star Break in 2007. Or their chances against the Yanks in 2006 after dropping the division by getting swept by the Royals. Beat writers are great for info, but talent evaluation is not their strong suit as a rule.

Sure we got beat

This punchless offense did manage to push accross 10 runs in the past two games. That’s at least league average. If we’re gonna make a run for and in the playoffs we’re gonna need another bat, but I think we’ve done pretty well with what we have.

And not for nothing our run differential is 3rd best in the AL.

The Red Sox lucked out and missed Verlander and Jackson—curerently the best 1-2 pitching combination in the majors—this series, so the guy naturally concludes that the Tigers are no good.

Can't wait to see the Sox in September

When we line up Verlander, Jackson, Porcello, Bonderman, and Galarraga against them. It would turn out much different than this past week. Let’s sweep the Angels! Hope the Big VD… errr Cabrera plays.

Just to summarize:

‘Dan Shaughnessey’ = idiot
