Game 54: Angels at Tigers
Los Angeles Angels at Detroit Tigers, Jun 6, 2009 7:05 PM EDT
Kelvim Escobar (0-0, -.--) vs.
Edwin Jackson (5-3, 2.30), 7:05 p.m. EST
Entering tonight on a four-game losing streak and a dwindling first-place lead in the AL Central (now 1.5 games), the Detroit Tigers need a win. And what they really need is to score some runs. Unfortunately, they'll be putting much the same lineup out there tonight as they did last night, with Miguel Cabrera again sitting out to rest his left hamstring.
(That shouldn't surprise anyone who saw Miggy wincing in pain after each swing he took in a pinch-hitting appearance. As Will Carroll wrote in his "Under the Knife" column, hamstring injuries tend to feel much worse the next day.)
Edwin Jackson probably has a good idea of how much run support he can expect tonight, as he got a first-hand look at Justin Verlander getting tagged with a no-decision despite shutting the Angels out for eight innings on Friday. Fortunately for the Tigers, Jackson is capable of giving them the same chance at winning. Last time out, he pitched his best game of the season, holding the Orioles to just two hits over eight scoreless innings, with seven strikeouts and one walk.
Jackson's worst game of the year, however, was in Anaheim against these Angels. In late April, he allowed six runs (three earned) and nine hits - both season highs - and lasted just five innings.
Kelvim Escobar returns to the majors after missing all of last season after surgery for a torn labrum. The last time he pitched was in September of 2007, a season in which he posted an 18-7 record and 3.40 ERA. In nine career starts against the Tigers, he's 8-0 with a 2.30 ERA.
Much of Detroit sports fans' attention will be focused on Game 5 of the Stanley Cup Finals, which has a "must-win" feeling for the Red Wings. I imagine many in tonight's GameThread will be watching Tigers with one eye, and Red Wings with the other, and the comments will likely reflect that. But I wouldn't be a good SB Nation team player if I didn't remind you that Winging It in Motown will be rockin' the Wings talk tonight.
UPDATE: Here are your starting lineups:

I hope so...
I hope Detroit is 2/2 tonight.
By the way...
the Wings SB blog is not nearly as friendly.
Wings and Tigs ...
I guess I will be watching the Wings with 1.5 eyes and the Tigers with half an eye. Because that more accurately sums up my interest levels for the teams tonight.
The team was winning while it was going on, too.

I hate to be this way...
but I couldn’t stand this year’s tune…at least last year’s was comically ridiculous. This year it seemed like they were kids after school and their mother was prone to burst into the video at any point with a tray of kool-aid and cupcakes.
haha
oh, it was bad. I don’t think anyone would argue with that. I just miss is for nostalgic purposes.
Abreu's hit
Looked a lot like Magglio’s last night. That’s just no man’s land for centerfielders, apparently.

thats true
kinda expected both Curtis and Hunter to run those down. They both hung up in the air for quite some time.
2 runs since I arrived
you can all thank me.

What is the technology on that stuff?
Is it reliable? Because I see it quoted quite often on whether or not a pitch was a ball or strike.
Forgive me for being a luddite...
but I think instant replay on homeruns is bulljank, and I think it is our responsibility to accept the ump’s call.

haha
I think it has a very useful place as a tool for pitchers, batters, and coaches. That being said, I appreciate the idea that all sports are better served by acknowledging the human aspect of the ump/ref/zebra, etc. This is certainly tangential to this game, but it’s a change in sports that is (unfortunately) slowly creeping in, and I think it erodes the integrity of the “game” as a “game.”
mostly I agree
then you see crazy shit the past couple of years in the world series where you go “was the ump blind?”
… yet none of that is reviewable. go figure!

the big cat
ok so I am embarrassed to say what is going on with miggy whats up with the 2 nights off in a row (minus the pinch hit in the 9th last night) is he hurt?
i like larish, he looks like he cares, unlike some other ppl (yeah, you Nate), so i hope he does well
but he get carved up on the inside corner WAY too much…he’s gotta learn to foul off those pitches…i still think he’ll be a good major leaguer, that being said, Thames should replace him
im so precautious i dont want to say who won/lost that deal so i dont jinx what edwin has done
so far though, i like the returns of that trade and i definitely hopeedwin’s success continues
JarJar Jurrjens lost yesterday.
5-3 so far, I think.
That one is the only one that really troubles me.
I saw him pitch that year
and I heard that news and just sighed. Maybe he won’t be as effective as we all thought he’d be, but I still have this feeling about him.
at the time it felt like the right thing
tigers have a shortstop problem, braves have a shortstop, tigers gear up for world series and no one cares how good jurrjens does.
then it all goes kerblooey and we cringe every time we see his name at ESPN.com in the top 5 NL ERA’s.
big time loss, clearly.

The Braves have our number on pitchers
Smoltz HOF 2014
i still think andrew miller will be an ace, and maybin i think will turn out to be an all star
but cabrera is cabrera
My personal stance...
shit in one hand, wish in the other…
I just don't see it
Miller can’t find the strike zone and Maybin can’t hit a curveball. Obviously we watch Edwin Jackson and see proof Miller can maybe figure it out eventually.
In any case, those guys were farther off than anyone thought and like you said, Cabrera is Cabrera.

winning, losing
doesn’t matter to me long as it works out ok for the tigers.

I like Larish too
frustrating as he has been lately.

the joe
is going to be rocking tonight!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
If only to occupy my evenings
…good lord I can’t stand Don Cherry. That guy is 14 years younger than my great-uncle and three times as confused.
good friend of mine paid
$321 for a upper bowl ticked to game 7
Only shitty thing...
Is that I went to a game in December and it was half-full. I think we, as fans, are taking the team for granted during the regular season.
Totally true.
But, we just assume they will be good and will make the playoffs. I mean, every year we contend. How cool is that?
Well,
That’s what Yankees/Red Sox fans assume, and nobody likes them.
hey
I hate yankees and red sox fans as much as the next guy.
But if my baseball team was as successful as the yankees and red sox, I’d enjoy the hell out of it too.
Not that I don’t enjoy it now, but winning is fun

BUT...
I’ll bet winning would bring you to the ballpark.
For some reason it doesn’t bring people to the Joe. Just sayin’.
living in detroit would bring me to the ballpark til I was broke either way. Good thing I’m so far away!

Agreed!
Now I have to score Skyline tickets to justify the gas.
Here in D.C., I have encountered some serious hate for my red wings
Because of that whole Caps., Red Wings Stanley Cup result.
Napoli's arm=My Grandma's arm
Sorry for that one Nona.
Oh he had this heavy shadow thingy going
for a couple games. All he needed was a plaid flannel shirt and a John Deere cap
god damnit
LETS————————————GO——————————-RED————————WINGS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! GAME TIMES PAIN TIME!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Proud to say I have killed 9
of 16 beers I got for this finals celebration!!!

Dear Jim,
Clete Thomas is not a No. 3 batter. Try Maggs there and Granderson 4th.
Sincerely,
Tigers fans everywhere
at least
it was the 8 and 9 batters this time

OT, a little. See where Clete caught that ball?
That’s right where I was sitting 2 rows up on Thursday. I actually called him Cletus. After that game, I just hated to leave. It’s a good thing I don’t live closer to Detroit, as I’d be broke going to the games. So much fun!

I know what you mean,
The first and only time I’ve been in Comerica was two years ago. Saw Andrew Miller against the Cardinals and we won14 — 2. Got to see Pujols hit a home run, which was fine since we were so far ahead. But I love that park and I would be there at least once a week if I were back home.
Me too!
I actually contemplated renting a hotel room so we could go to Fri night’s game. But then my common sense kicked in. Couldn’t really afford it, but I sure wanted to see another game.

afraid I’ll jinx both teams. No double dipping for me tonight. I’m dying to turn the channel, though.

9th Inning
Do they run EJax back out or give Rodney another shot? Haven’t seen a pitch count.

Run him back out there

true, but Mr. Jackson just might want to finish what he started.

Magglio Ordonez and the EXPLOSIVE Tigers…

The Wings and Pens look like two completely different teams from Thursday night.
Is this just going to be one of those “home team wins” series?

A tired EJ
is better than any other non-tired guys on the staff not named Verlander.

Billie will be glad to know
Passing on a note from Bill of DetroitTigersWeblog.com here:
Thames did not play for Toledo tonight, so he’ll probably be wearing the Tigers uniform tomorrow
That game was worth the wait!

Pens are falling apart!
I love this!
(Now, I would have posted on the Wings forum, but I like BYB better)
But what position will he play?

Great seeing the kids at the park
all geeked up over Edwin’s pitching in the 9th.

So if
Larish is out and Cabrera is day to day, Thames is the DH (usually) who’s got first base? Rayburn? Can he play 1st through a whole game? Or at all? Anderson? With Thames back I think it will be Maggs in right Clete in left and of course Curtis in center… but who’s on first…
Welcome to Detroit>>Where the weak are killed and eaten.
just a guess here
haven’t seen anything so maybe i’m late and wrong, but Thames will play first. he’d done it for the Hens.

Oh, ok
I am completely satisfied with your answer. Then Jim will probably DH Maggs. Clete does a fine job in right field; younger and quicker…

I always thought Thames looked good in the games he played at 1B. Showed a pretty slick glove in snaring some grounders down the line and on the hop.

I for one

Wasn't it to back up Carlos or was it Casey
when they started working him at 1st? I can’t remember. It seems like a long time ago. But he was OK at first.
