Game 56: Tigers at White Sox
Detroit Tigers at Chicago White Sox, Jun 8, 2009 2:05 PM EDT
Armando Galarraga (3-6, 5.31) vs.
Clayton Richard (2-1, 3.97), 2:05 p.m. EST
We're playing two today, as the Tigers and White Sox begin a five-game series at U.S. Cellular Field. Detroit currently has a 4.5 game lead over the third-place White Sox in the AL Central. The second game of the doubleheader will be played at 8:11 p.m. EST.
Armando Galarraga is winless in his last seven starts, taking six losses during that span. But he seems to be making small steps of improvement, and would certainly have benefited from better run support in his last three games. Galarraga is 1-2 with a 5.11 ERA against the White Sox in three career appearances (two starts). Both of those losses came at U.S. Cellular Field, where he's given up seven runs in six innings.
Clayton Richard has pitched well in three of his past four starts, but it was in his last game that he got knocked around. Against the A's, Richard allowed five runs, seven hits (three of them home runs), and four walks in 5.1 innings. He pitched 0.1 of an inning versus the Tigers earlier this season, giving up two hits.
Miguel Cabrera is in the starting lineup. Jim Leyland says they'll see how Miggy does in this first game before deciding whether or not he'll play tonight. According to Jason Beck, Cabrera insists that his hamstring feels better when he plays in the field, which is why he's not the designated hitter.

As a Michigan fan, I hate to say it
but I hope we get to Richard early and often. Let’s make their bullpen work.

Isn't Pierzynski
overdue for punch in the face? We should trade for Michael Barret for ChiSox series intimidation alone.
If he got punched in the face at breakfast this morning
He would already be overdue.

any thoughts on who gets moved out after the game?
Beck seemed to think it would be a position player
alwaysatiger.blogspot.com
would make some sense
until they figure out what to do about the starting pitcher situation, and they won’t know until tuesday night probably.
but if Big Mig is hurt, it would be hard to find a free position player either

13 pitchers, then
they need to make a trade or start eating more contracts
alwaysatiger.blogspot.com
They do have an outfield surplus
And unless Galarraga goes deep into this afternoon’s game, they might need some extra pitchers.

tied with Boston for second
Toronto has hit into 59. We have 58. Though unless ESPN updates these things up to the minute, we are now tied for first. WE’RE NUMBER 1. WE’RE NUMBER 1.

hammy
being laid up with a hammy may give him too much time for some hammyburgers.
I get worried when he has too much time w/o forced exercise.

when's the next flight out of Toledo?
at this rate we’ll need to call up 3 relief pitchers to make it through the day!
Does WGN not have the 8 second delay?

You know,
It’s really nice of Armando to lay down like this. I didn’t know he and Dontrelle were this friendly for him to hand over his rotation spot so easily.
Afternoon all
I see the sadness got started without me
well, pitch count aside, that could have been a lot worse...at least he didnt give up 5 ER like last time
That may be the most positive comment I have seen from you

Games against the WhiteSox
really bring me down. I was having a good day so far, and then this game has to start. I never have good feelings about games against Cjicago. ugh

The City of Detroit
Should have just sent Jermaine Dye to the last of Tiger Stadium with a couple of bats, he’d have that lot cleared in no time.
there is no more right field
and the rest of it is coming down as we speak
meh
the good news is I get to watch the Tigers in New York for the 2nd time this year on TV.
the bad news is that its on WGN with the Sox commentators.
I watch a lot of the Yankees(I’m not a fan of them.) Their commentators aren’t biased at all and overall do a pretty good job. The White Sox’s are a bunch of hicks and I don’t like them at all.
you know that's true, and it shocks me
I watched a broadcast from the YES network being shown on MLB Network. I had no clue it wasn’t a national broadcast. They were right down the middle and not nearly as annoying as I picture anyone associated with theYankees

that was weird.....
I’m guessing it was a hit and run but perhaps, just perhaps Raburn was trying to steal home.
Either way
I like the aggressiveness. (Especially since it didn’t backfire.)

The first inning
has been quite rough on Tigers pitching lately. Maybe Bondo’s return is bringing back old memories.
Ian's latest tweet reminded me again
thought I should mention it in here… see if we can get the longest thread ever with this… Happy Birthday Ian. I got you on FB, but I figured I should wish you a happy bday again here.

Unless we win both. Then it does.

Maybe the Tigers will acquire Grilli for a birthday present. Okay, that was mean. Beating the White Sox would be much better.

What a clutch performance from Armando
One minute he is almost “assured” a demotion, the next he is helping us maybe get a win. That’s pretty cool.
Let’s hope it continues.
that was fast. 7 pitches? way to make their pen work

He's not an all-star
there are at least 5 closers in the AL with better numbers. Sorry

anyone else notice...
the awkward man-hug between cabrera and rodney? hilarious.
Well, that was an interesting game!

Now, everybody east of Chicago...
Go outside, face west and blow real hard. It’d be a shame if the second game got ppd. and there’s some nasty weather around Chicago.
Isn't somebody supposed to get sent down
after this game?

Joel "The Vulture" Zumaya
Bailed out two games in a row by the Tigers offense, and gets two wins in the process…
What’s he got against the starting pitchers? (Not that Porcello was in line for the win yesterday.)
Ryan Perry going down says Leland

Matt Wieters Picked Himself To Be The Best Man At His Wedding. It Was His Only Option.
So...
… Perry pays the price for D-Train coming off the tracks, and desigNate never getting the chance to expose his suckiness?
Maybe
but he could do with a little more seasoning.imo

I believe it has way more to do with options.....
They can’t just send Nate or D-Train down, it’s a little more complicated than that with their contracts and service time.
Perry is a first year player. If they were going to send him down at any point this year it only counts as one option, so it doesn’t really hurt. He may not even leave the team, depending on what happens tonight…..
I could be wrong, but I am sure Kurt or Ian could expound.
"Remember there's a big difference between kneeling down and bending over."
if perry is down for less than 20 days
it doesn’t count as an option, I recently learned from Bill’s site.
I doubt he’s down that long. I suspect another moves comes after tomorrow night’s game.

plus
I don’t think options will really be a worry with Perry. he’s going to spend most of his career in the majors, by the looks of it.
