Introducing Your 2010 Detroit Tigers...?
[Editor's Note: Promoted from the FanPosts, for the sake of discussion. I'm sure a lot of you would like to chime in on this.]
Because it's NEVER too early to speculate and produce rumors. I thought this would be a sort of fun game we could play. Read on...
I was looking through all of the current contracts for the Tigers. I was also looking at who is going to be available on the free agent market after this season. While we are undoubtedly in first place currently and we seem to have many elements of a winning team, no team ever stays completely together from year-to-year. The fact of the matter is, we are going to lose some of our favorite (or perhaps unfavorite) players following this season. I propose to you to put together your OWN roster for the 2010 season, bearing in mind who is currently under contract and who will potentially be leaving.
Below you will find the needed links to formulate such a roster. The 1st link has the players' current contracts. The 2nd link is a list of available free agents after this season (or potential FA's depending on options and whatnot). Note that the 2nd link has a link within it that also displays players who are CURRENTLY FA's (i.e Pedro Martinez, Ben Sheets, etc.)

http://www.mlbtraderumors.com/2008/12/2010-mlb-free-a.html
*** The only twist in this is that you need to try to make it realistic. You need to factor in money and other conditions, just as a GM would (can't have the Tigers signing Victor Martinez, Josh Beckett, Matt Holiday, and Manny Ramirez all at once because it's just not going to happen). Everyone always thinks they know it all and could do the GM's job...well now is your chance to prove it.
With that all being said, here's my attempt at our 25-man roster for Opening Day:
C - Gerald Laird
Laird was only signed for one year but his defense and attitude make him a good value and I would like to see the Tigers re-sign him this offseason. He's familiar with our pitching staff now so it would be good to continue to have some continuity next year rather than sign a new player who would have to come in and learn our pitchers from scratch.
1B - Miguel Cabrera
He's not going anywhere.
2B - Felipe Lopez
Great all-around player who is also very versatile. Seems to fly under the radar just enough to probably not command a huge wad of money (has played in small markets of Cincy, Washington, and currently Arizona). He's basically like a Polanco but with more speed. Good defender. Will be 30 years old so still a lot of years left. Only knock is can be injury-prone but has played through this year thus far without missing any time. I'm very high on this guy...would love to see Detroit get him or even put him at SS if they want to bring up Scott Sizemore to the Bigs.
3B - Brandon Inge
Has another year left yet, and has once again proven his worth to this team.
SS - Marco Scutaro
Another solid, all-around mid-level type. Having a breakout year this year in Toronto after spending much of his career on the bench in Oakland. Will probably ask for a little more money because of this but still not an A-level FA so should be affordable. Barring any inability to sign Scutaro, my second choice would be to re-sign Everett. He's a good value and has been a little bit of a surprise at the plate, but still nothing to write home about.
CF - Curtis Granderson
Nothing to see here...move along.
RF - Magglio Ordonez
Perhaps my most controversial of picks, I'm sure. However, I have a feeling that some how, some way he is going to get that option to kick in this season. I think he may do just well enough in his current situation to justify getting enough ABs. If I am incorrect though, this would throw some of my other choices off.
LF - Wilkin Ramirez
We have a million and one OFs in the minors who have been up and down the last few seasons...it's about time some of them start getting more chances. In the very limited amount of time I got to see this guy, there was just something about him that I liked. I could also see Clete Thomas going in this spot, pending his performance in the second half.
DH - Carlos Guillen
He's got 2 years left and I don't see the Tigers eating his contract over others such as Nate Robertson or Dontrelle Willis. If he can somehow get healthy again (I know, asking a lot) he may be a serviceable DH. This would also keep him healthier, rather than trudging around in leftfield everyday.
BN - Dusty Ryan
We need a backup catcher and he hasn't really done anything to lose this spot, has he? May as well keep it warm for other kids we have in the minors.
BN - Clete Thomas
Should be re-signed. Seems to do well in his role, has a cannon for an arm, and is a fan favorite (still not sure why). Can play anywhere in the OF.
BN - Ramon Santiago
I personally think he is a great career utility guy. Has been clutch at times this season. We need someone to back-up the middle INF. Re-sign him please.
BN - Ryan Raburn
I'm always on the fence about Raburn, but ultimately I think it would be smart to re-sign him. He can always be trade-bait with his versatility and he has some limited power which I like.
SP - Justin Verlander
Obviously our biggest off-season goal is to re-sign him. Has shown that 2008 was a fluke.
SP - Edwin Jackson
Re-signing him should be priority #2 behind Verlander. His price is going to sky-rocket though after busting out this season as one of the most reliable pitchers in the league.
SP - Rick Porcello
Should be great for years to come. Is signed through next season plus has options for 2011 and 2012.
SP - Jeremy Bonderman
If he can somehow come back healthy next year and help this club (feels like I say this every year) he would be a very adequate #4. It would be very easy to say forget him but the fact is he is under contract and will be pitching for a new one so maybe he can get it right again.
SP - Lucas French
We need a lefty and I can't think of any other lefties we have who are big-league ready. (This includes Willis) He has pitched in some big games already (Grienke anyone?) and we shall see how he plays out the rest of the season. I think he has good potential though.
RP - Bobby Seay
Has been lights-out lately and very good overall through most of his tenure here. I feel he has earned a new contract.
RP - Zach Miner
Say what you want about him but he has quietly been very valuable to this team, either as a spot-starter or an innings eater. Leyland clearly likes him too, it seems.
RP - Ryan Perry
Our potential future closer. Next year he can get a full MLB season under his belt and we'll see how much he improves.
RP - Joel Zumaya
There are so many reasons not to trust this guy anymore but he is the guts of this team, in a way. He's also a huge fan-favorite and I think there's a good chance he may re-sign this offseason.
RP - Fu-Te Ni
If what he has shown thus far is any indication of the type of bullpen guy he can be for us, I don't see why you let him go. Seay is nice, but wouldn't it be great to have TWO reliable lefties in the pen?
RP - Octavio Dotel
I dunno, I just seem to always be very high on this guy. Plus wouldn't you want to really stick it to the White Sux by signing him away from them? Dude can pitch. Hopefully Tigers aren't stingy with the money and go after him.
RP - Rafael Soriano
And finally.....our new closer! He is a very dominant pitcher but has always been stuck behind someone else in Atlanta's pen (i.e. Mike Gonzalez). He's still fairly young, as we know closers can last a very long time. I hope the Tigers learned their lesson last year by having to settle for Lyon. Rodney has been perfect in save situations so far this year for sure...and I couldn't be happier. But he will also probably be asking for way more than what he is really worth to stay and if you had to pick, wouldn't you rather take the guy who will be good in save AND non-save situations? Plus maybe he could add a few years back on to our lives after Todd Jones and Rodney.
EDIT: And if it wasn't already implied, yes, this is based on us eating the remaining year of Willis and Robertson's contracts.
Aaaaaand, as long as I'm tinkering around here, let's look at my projected lineup:
1 - Felipe Lopez
2 - Marco Scutaro
3- Curtis Granderson
4 - Miguel Cabrera
5 - Brandon Inge
6 - Carlos Guillen
7 - Magglio Ordonez
8 - Wilkin Ramirez
9 - Gerald Laird

Verlander contract
Great post, but let’s play this game. What type of contract is Verlander going to command. I’ll say 5 years 75 million dollars with a team option for a 6th that could push it up to 95 million if they pick it up. It’s scary to think what the Yankees or Boston would pay for Verlander services.
I like to think that there's one denominator that those other teams don't have though...
and that’s the Illitich’s. It’s the same reason why many of the Red Wings re-sign time after time….people love working for the Illitch’s. Verlander is going to get paid no matter where he winds up, one way or another. But with a nucleus of great young players like Cabrera, Granderson, Porcello, etc., our competitiveness this year and a possible playoff run, and the sentimentality of staying in Detroit where he went to the World Series and got a no-hitter I think we have an excellent chance of signing him.
I would put pretty high odds
Scott Sizemore is the starting second baseman next season. He’s done nothing but produce at each rung of the ladder.
Scutaro is an interesting thought though I suspect Everett is given another year in Detroit.
To put things into further perspective:
Adam Everett is making $1.0 million this season.
Marco Scutaro is making $1.1 million this season.
Both will probably receive more next year. I’ll take Scutaro’s bat anyday. Plus there would be minimal, if any drop-off on defense.
Felipe Lopez is making $3.5 million this season. Of course, he is a significant upgrade as well. But when you compare the Tiger’s payroll from last season to this season, an extra couple mill isn’t going to break the bank. Not to mention, Placido Polanco is making $4.6 million for this year.
Octavio Dotel is making $6.0 million this season. Compare that to Brandon Lyon’s $4.25 million. I think the difference there is every bit worth it. Plus we may not have to pay that much necessarily anyways.
Also, Rafael Soriano is making $6.35 million this season. Fernando Rodney is making $2.7 million. A significant difference, but again, Rodney will be asking for much more than that in the offseason with his stats this year.
Looking at all of this, I am sure we could have enough to sign at least 2, maybe 3 of these guys and still have enough to re-sign our own. I wouldn’t really classify any of these a “big” signings either. These are all pretty much mid-level guys.
+1
Sizemore deserves the job. He’s also cheap, which is nice.

Plus
Kevin Goldstein at Baseball Prospectus had great things to say about him- saying that he’d take Sizemore over Polanco right now. That’s high praise.

Rotation:
Verlander
Jackson
Bonderman
Porcello
French
Bullpen:
Zumaya -Closer
Perry
Seay
Ni
Dolsi
Fein
A Free Agent
Catcher – Laird
1st Base – Cabrerra
2nd Base – Sizemore
Short – Everett
3rd – Inge
Outfield – Granderson, Thomas, Ramirez
bench: Ryan, Larish, Raburn, Santiago
No big shakeups, no big signings other than maybe a middle reliever. DD won’t have the budget with the verlander/jackson contract renewals and the eaten contracts of willis/Robertson
This is more realistic
http://www.motor-citysports.blogspot.com
I don't see how
judging by this, Carlos Guillen, Magglio, Robertson, AND Willis’ contracts will all be eaten. And again, I see Magglio eeking out his ABs this season…I really believe it will happen despite most people not wanting that to happen. He’ll face all the lefties and I’m sure he will DH part of the time with Thames.
At least the above poster thought-out a roster though.
I don't think Maggs contract will be allowed to kick in
he’s not hitting well enough to be played often enough. If they’re smart, they’ll stick to the platoon or make a trade. Either way Maggs isn’t getting the PA. If he’s getting them, it’s hurting the team now and later, and I just don’t see that.
I think Guillen will the 25th man this roster is lacking.
I imagine one of Nate or Dontrelle makes the team
by Kurt Mensching on Jul 11, 2009 9:25 PM EDT up reply actions
If that is indeed the case
and we owe Maggs nothing, and we only eat one contract instead of the two, wouldn’t that leave more than enough money to sign our FA’s as well as some others?
I think it will depend
how much will Verlander and Jackson see their salaries jump. There’s a couple of other arb-eligible guys to account for, too. I think when all is said and done they could be spending $110-115m without any real additions to the roster.
Based on this year’s attendance, maybe they won’t be able to add much salary on top of that.
by Kurt Mensching on Jul 11, 2009 10:18 PM EDT up reply actions
No.
Jackson and Verlander will be due raises, and Guillen, Granderson, Robertson, Willis and Cabrera all have increases coming on their contracts. Even when we save $15 million by not letting Maggs hit the incentives, that money will be tied up by the above players getting paid more.
http://www.motor-citysports.blogspot.com
Guillen's contract will not be eaten.
Robertson and Willis might have their contracts eaten. And, Ordonez has a 0% chance of hitting those incentives.
http://www.motor-citysports.blogspot.com
And would you mind guessing who that middle reliever FA could be?
After all, that is the whole point of this. For fun.
2010 Lineup
SP: Verlander, Jackson, Porcello, Bonderman, French
RP: Zumaya, Seay, Ni, Perry, Fein, Armando (long relief), Cordero (closer)
C: Laird
1B: Cabrera
2B: Orlando Hudson
SS: Everett or Scuttaro
3B: Inge
LF: Guillen (until he gets tired or injured, then Wilkins Ramirez)
CF: Granderson
RF: Thomas
Bench: Rayburn, Santiago, Thames, Ryan
I wouldn't object to this much
except Hudson will command the most money of all the 2Bs and if the Tigers were prepared to spend THAT much they may as well re-sign Polanco
also, I think Miner will be cheaper and probably fill that role just as well as Galarraga would
Hmmm....
SP: Halladay, Verlander, Jackson, Porcello, Bonderman
RP: Zumaya, Seay, Ni, French, Gallaraga, Rodney, Miner
C: Laird
1B: Cabrera
2B: Sizemore
SS: Everett:
3B: Inge
LF: Ramirez
CF: Grandy
RF: Thomas
Bench: Santiago, Ryan, Polanco, Anderson
My thoughts are Thames, Maggs and Perry all get traded, Thames and Perry for Halladay, Maggs for prospects to a team hoping he comes around this year…afterall, why change much in the offseason after winning a ring this year…
Also- question
Do we have insurance on Guillen/Robertson/Willis/Bonderman’s contracts so we’re not eating all the money?
What's Thames' status going into next year?
Not a lot of HR pop in the projected lineups above—assuming Inge reverts to something closer to his career numbers at some point.

Believe this is his 4th year of service time... may be his 5th
He should be arbitration eligible one more time, then he’s a FA.
by David Tokarz on Jul 12, 2009 2:37 PM EDT up reply actions
HRs don't win divisions
Great pitching wins divisions….and World Series for that matter.
Last season and this season should be testaments to that.
I'm with you on Soriano
But Gonzales has been sucking as of late, and Soriano has been moved into the closer role. No way Atlanta let’s him walk unless he demands K-Rod money.
http://www.fromthecopa.blogspot.com
Lyon?
Whats wrong with signing Lyon to another year? Aside from the miserable start he has been one of our most meliable middle relievers. But, since we are talking $$$ and the possibilities of him wanting a raise, I’d trust my faith in a FA.
Asking the wrong dude
I don’t mind him- he’d make a good stopgap closer as long as we don’t mind the stress.

One comment about your lineup
Well, two…
First, I doubt Ordonez is going to get the AB’s he needs for that contract. I’d be willing to bet that Leyland is under strict orders from Dombrowski to prevent that from happening. Factor in defensive replacements and pinch hitters on days when Maggs isn’t doing well, and I just don’t see him hitting that point.
Second- not entirely sure if Ramirez will be ready to step into a job next spring training. He’s got all the potential in the world, but he still needs work on his plate discipline- I’d like to see him get a few months at AAA next year to keep working on that. He’s got fantastic tools, but he’s gotta refine them to avoid ending up as AAAA filler.
Also
I’d like to see us pick up a large bat rather than sign bullpen arms… the only problem is that the bats on the market kinda stink. Maybe try for Holliday or Rick Ankiel for LF/RF?
Again, this is assuming we don’t have to pay Maggs.
by David Tokarz on Jul 13, 2009 1:51 AM EDT up reply actions
No way on Lopez
Lopez would be an upgrade offensively, but look at the teams he’s played for. All of them lost while he was there, sometimes they’ve been historically bad, and nearly every one of them eventually gets rid of him for someone they think is better. He was replaced by Guzman in Washington, for example. I’d prefer re-signing Everett and bringing up Sizemore, but if a team with defensive needs, like say the Red Sox, blew away Everett with an offer, I’d much rather see, say, Alex Cora, or John McDonald on a one-year deal, and keep up the defensive jag.
Cabrera...
should be the 3 hitter, Granderson should either stay #1 or move to #5… unless of course Granderson becomes a better hitter than Cabrera between now and then

Resign Polanco to a nice 2 year Deal
He continues to contribute and it allows us to continue to let are farm system develop.
I don't think Sizemore needs 2 more years to develop
considering they are talking about him starting next season.
yeah but you could platoon him or use Polly as a Backup in the 2nd year
but why sign a FA 2nd Baseman? when you could resign a top one? just doesn’t make sense to me either let him walk and play a young guy or pay him and wait for one more year
Maybe not that bad
But Sizemore is a lot better than people give him credit for.

If Josh Beckett opts out (Highly Unlikely)
Expect the guy who drafted him and had him in the Marlins organization to throw a ton of Money his way, that being said i think he would like to stay in Boston but Dambroski and Leyland love this guy so it would not surprise me to see him come here with a Big Contract
just think of
Beckett
Verlander
Jackson
Porcello
Bonderman (If Healthy)
that looks like a deadly rotation to me
im sorry
if Boston doesn’t pick up his Option which makes it much more unlikely, but still just dream of that rotation
and if you could pull off a trade before the deadline to get Halladay
Beckett
Halladay
Verlander
Jackson
Porcello*
*Porcello might be in the deal but i say Figaro,French and Perry for Halladay if you could swing that oh man
I would sign Soriano and Betencourt
and yes i would also resign Fernando Rodney who has done well in the closers role this year (Well not Good or even Great) and i think he would be better back in a setup position
i mean look at that
Starters:
Beckett
Verlander
Jackson
Porcello
Bonderman (If healthy)
Relief:
Perry
Seay
French (Bye bye Zach Minor you have been replaced)
Betancourt
Zumaya
Rodney
Closer:
Soriano
that has the potential to be a great Staff
So re-sign Verlander, Jackson, AND Rodney
And then sign Beckett, Soriano, and Betancourt?
Are we planning on selling the team to the Steinbrenners this off-season?
+1
There’s enough room in the budget for maybe two free agent acquisitions, and not of the Beckett variety.

Lets see
C: Gerald Laird
1B: Miguel Cabrera
2B: Scott Sizemore
3B: Brandon Inge
SS: Adam Everett
LF: Carlos Guillen
CF: Curtis Granderson
RF: Rick Ankiel (at a contract no more than 3yr, 24 million)
BN: Ramon Santiago
BN: Clete Thomas
BN: Ryan Raburn
BN: Marcus Thames
BN: Dusty Ryan
SP: Justin Verlander
SP: Edwin Jackson
SP: Rick Porcello
SP: Jeremy Bonderman
SP: Brad Penny/Carl Pavano/cheap 4th starter
RP: Bobby Seay
RP: Fu-Ti Ni
RP: Joel Zumaya
RP: Casey Fien
RP: Brandon Lyon
RP: Zach Miner
RP: Luis Marte
We acquire Ankiel as the big bat we need in the offseason- Boras client or no, he’ll be slightly cheaper because he’s such a risky option. We grab an extra fifth starter (I suggested Pavano or Penny)- I simply don’t trust French, plus I’m willing to bet that one of Porcello/Bonderman/Pavano will need some time on the DL or just resting. We don’t sign any FA relievers- you never spend big money on such a volatile commodity. Use Lyon or Zumaya as the closer, keep Perry at AAA as your first option as a callup or sub him out for Luis Marte if you think he’s good as a starter for a long period of time. If Guillen struggles or gets injured, call up Wilkin Ramirez (at AAA for more seasoning).
so far, I think this is the best bet for what we'll see
by Kurt Mensching on Jul 13, 2009 1:23 PM EDT up reply actions
I like that RF option...
I’ve always liked how Ankiel was able to over come his mental issues (throwing strikes) and turned it into a renewed career as a quality outfielder.
Good choice.
I really think that this team construction could win the Central
I’d take our core of Verlander/Jackson/Porcello/Cabrera/Granderson over any other team in the division.
by David Tokarz on Jul 17, 2009 11:29 PM EDT up reply actions
Bonderman’s career as a Tiger is very likely finished in my opinion after next year. He got by with his raw talent and now that he has lost arm strength I do not see him ever being anywhere near effective as either a starter or reliever. Also, unless Magglio somehow returns to his 2007 level of play, there is not a chance that he will get the PAs and/or games started necessary for his option to kick in paying him $33 mil over the next two years.
Rotation:
Verlander
Jackson
Porcello
4 and 5- Galarraga, French, FAs, Call-Ups, Three Finger Brown all before the three amigos Bonderman, WIllis, and Robertson ($34.5 mil next year down the drain). I’d expect too with Verlander and Jackson both not becoming FAs till 2012 that the Tigers will not aim for long terms deals until after the 2010 season (when they’ll have more spending room to work with).
by ryan_matthews28 on Jul 13, 2009 1:29 PM EDT reply actions
Keep the budget low
1st Carera – 20m
2nd Felipe Lopez – 3.5m
3rd Inge – 6.6m
SS Everett – 1m
C Laird – 3m
OF Granderson – 5.5m
OF Thames – 3m
OF Thomas – 0.5m
DH Guillen – 13m
Starting Pitchers in order:
Verlander – 2m
Jackson – 5m? How much blood to keep him next year?
Jason Marquis – 10m
Brad Penny – 5m
Porcello – 1.02m
Closer Mike Gonzalez – 3.5m
If we go with this line up and keep many of the younger players, bench players, and the pen, then we should have a budget of $101.62 million. I wanted to reduce our price from the 115m mark of this year to about 100m.
Note that we will not get Becket, Orlando Hudson, or Rick Ankiel because these teams like these guys enough to pay them out for the next few years. O-Dog is going to get a crazy amount of money from the Dodgers for the next few years. Lopez plays for a small market team in the tanks, so it should be easy enough to get him. Marquis plays for a small market team that will not keep up. Penny is hanging out to dry next season, and I thought that it would be a good idea to improve the closer spot.
The Tigers’ GM cannot get players that are well liked and productive from the playoff teams and big spender teams. I look at small market teams that are on the down swing or players being left over by the big spenders. That is how we can improve without taking on too many large contracts. The other factor is to not trade away our pieces (what is left of our farm system) for a half season hit (like Roy H).
half a season hit?
He is the most dependable arm in all of Baseball why would you only get a half a season out of him?
Beckett will not be a FA anyway
I’d say it’s at least 90% likely Boston keeps him.
I also considered someone like Jason Marquis but I think the Tigers stick with French instead to save money for other needs.
I’m assuming that Verlander figure is a typo….
Marquis?
Why? He’s mediocre, and he’s been incredibly lucky this year. I’d rather have Armando or Pavano.
by David Tokarz on Jul 13, 2009 2:44 PM EDT up reply actions
Eh
Armando sucks, but he’s cheap, versus Marquis who is coming off a career year and overperforming his peripherals. Pavano’s been horribly unlucky (even more unlucky since he has to live in Cleveland all season) and has actually been okay this year.

Seriously, I don't think much will change next year
The best comment so far was about Tagne’s aunt. LOL
I literally just wrote on my blog last night about the SS situation next year. I’ve got an off the wall solution:
Brandon Inge to SS, Adrian Beltre on a short, semi-cheap, incentive-laden contract.
I’m not worried. I’m not a Brandon Inge fan in the least, other than his baseball talents. My least favorite tiger, I think.
Haha, he is a good person. That doesn’t mean I have to enjoy every Tigers fan in the universe going on and on and on about how great he is. Couple that with his temper tantrums after he got moved off his position last year and his excuses for not making adjustments because pitchers are pitching him “like he’s babe ruth with everything on the black” and I found him to be whiney.
Kid can pick it at 3rd, though.
C-Laird
1B- Cabrera
2B- Sizemore
SS- Everett
3B- Inge
LF- Guillen or Ramirez
CF- Granderson
RF- Thomas
DH- Thames or Guillen
Bench: Thames or Guillen, Ramirez (if he does not start in LF), Ryan, Santiago, Raburn
-I could see Polanco being brought back if he was willing to take a 1 year deal at nearly the same amount he is earning now. If he wants a multi-year deal, he will be cut loose and Sizemore will be given the job. Everett will be kept and Santiago will fill in at both spots if/when need be. Josh Anderson might be kept, as well.
Potential call ups: Clevlen, Strieby, Larish, Duglach or Rhymes, Avila, Kelly or some other minor league free agent OF, Sardina or some other minor league free agent catcher.
Potential call ups:
Bullpen:
Zumaya
Perry
Miner
Lyon
Seay
Ni
Fien
-Zumaya and Perry will battle it out for closer after Rodney is given a big money deal in free agency that we will not match. Lyon is kept at a similar deal to this year just in case Zumaya or Perry falter in that role.
Potential call ups: Weinhardt, Satterwhite, Jensen, Rapada
Starting Rotation:
Verlander
Jackson
Porcello
Galaragga
Bondo/French
-Willis and Robertson will either be cut or spend most of the year on the DL. Bondo is still an unknown to me b/c of the injuries. I think Armando and French will be good bottom of the rotation starters, while Bondo has the potential to be a great bottom of the rotation starter.
Potential call ups for a spot start: Marte, Figaro, Brown, Bonine, Lambert
http://www.motor-citysports.blogspot.com
Dolsi and Simons would also be potenital call ups
http://www.motor-citysports.blogspot.com
Sign, not re-sign
A lot of those guys need new contracts. I’m talking about guys who played for other teams.
I'd say thats fine
I doubt we’re going to be terribly competitive in 2010- maybe in the thick of it, but it’s kind of a rebuilding year for us anyways. I’d like to see us ready to be a force again in 2011- we’ll hopefully have Wilkin Ramirez in a corner OF spot, Alex Avila at C and a pretty darn good rotation if we can lock up Verlander/Jackson and an arm like Crosby develops well.
by David Tokarz on Jul 14, 2009 3:14 AM EDT up reply actions
Should the Tigers just get rid of Zumaya?
You would think with all the injuries the tigers would just part ways. Anybody know if they would get a compensatory pick if he leaves? Not sure he would agree to this, but just read an article about him possibly going down to the minors and developing a new pitch. That could be a good idea
FYI: you can read the article here

Zumaya relies to heavily on that fastball. If he could compliment it with a change-up, it would gretly improve the effectiveness of his fast ball. But, what’s the issue with a middle reliever having 3, 4, or 5 pitches? It seems now a days that most relievers rely on 2 pitches, a fastball and either a utter or slider. Why not have a fastball, curve, and a change-up? Or ever add a 2 seam fast ball? Could you imagine a 2-seamer coming in a 97+ with movement?
Anyway, I wish Zumaya luck. I hope he can come back and find what it was that made him a fan favorite in ’06.
