Visiting Detroit
[Editor's Note: Bumped up to keep this one current.]
Hey guys, I'm a Ranger fan from over at Lone Star Ball and am planning my annual baseball roadtrip. This year I will be visitng Detroit on 8/8 to catch a game and then I'll be off to the next stop. While I'm there, is there anything I need to see or do (other than the game) before moving on...restaurants, a particular regional beer I need to try, historical sites, areas to avoid, etc? Also, if anyone has tips on getting cheap tickets (coupon codes - we practically give away Rangers tickets to get people to show up) that would be helpful as I am on a budget. Thanks in advance.

Particular regional beer?
Bell’s Oberon is undoubtedly our most famous regional beer….and it’s great for the summer-time so very appropriate.
There’s so much to see and do, it’s hard for me to recommend certain things over others. Especially since Detroit is not a very good example of the beauty of our lovely state…..save for some of the architecture.

The Detroit Institute of Arts
I know there’s lots to see and do in Greektown and around the ballpark, but the DIA is a gem and the recent renovation has made it even better. The Diego Garcia murals and the history of how they got there are Detroit in a microcosm.

I am sorry
I hate to nit-pick, but it’s Diego Rivera.

Thank you.
That’s what you get for posting in a hurry. At least I didn’t say “Pedroia”

Or Just because - - Wieters!
Diego Garcia is a good Spanish name, though.

Slows BBQ
If there’s one place to eat in Detroit, this is the one I’d suggest. The food’s fantastic, and the restaurant looks great, as well.
Plus, it’s not very far from what’s left of Tiger Stadium, if you care to check that out.

Whats left will be gone by then though...
So, our visitor from the Lone Star State will have to see how baseball was originally played at the corner.

I apologize...
I’ve been to Slow’s on a couple of occasions and think that its a great BBQ joint, though someone who’s coming from Texas might think otherwise. Texas BBQ and Slow’s BBQ don’t compare, that’s not saying the BBQ isn’t delicious.

Agreed. Slow's is tasty, but...
The best BBQ in the country is made in Texas. And served somewhat differently that how we serve it here.

Yeah, I thought about that.
LVS’s Coney Island might be a better recommendation, if you want more of a Detroit flavor.

I don't think it's supposed to compare to Texas
I’d call it more of a KC-style BBQ, which is completely different. That’d be like comparing Chicago-style pizza to New York pizza.

I'll take a Detroit style pizza instead.
Detroit, though not know for its own style of pizza, has been compaired, if not better than, the Ny and Chicago styles of pizza. I think it was Men’s Health, who did an article about the best pizza’s in the US and Detroit had 5 in the Top 20. That’s pretty good for a city not known for its pizza.
KC, Carolina, or Texas, I personally think they are all good BBQs. I’m an equal opportunity BBQer. Anything cooked on a grill is fine with me, even pizza (which is damn good if you ask me. I made one almost every night during the Cup Finals).

Coaches Corner
If you like pizza (and onion rings!), definitely go here . It’s only a couple of blocks from the park; my family usually goes there before a game.

Jacoby's
There are a lot of good places to eat and drink around the park; this one’s still my favorite. It’s a bit of a walk south of the park on Brush (runs between Comerica and Ford Field), but it’s worth it. Classic German dishes, great burgers, and a terrific fresh perch sandwich are all good menu options. They also have a great assortment of local and imported beers (although I don’t think they carry Oberon or any of Bell’s other great brews). There’s a very cool old timey ambiance (dark woods, copper ceiling, great looking bar) and usually a fun drinking crowd. It’s been there about a hundred years, as I recall. It does get pretty smoky, but so do most bars in the area I suppose. The men’s room is an adventure. Watch your head if you’re over 5-7 or so.
If you do end up down that way, the river (and the river walk) are close by. DIA is a solid recommendation, but a ways north of the park. The bus might be your best choice, but a cab ride that short distance would be cheap. You might also check out some of the classic buildings downtown; I recommend at least a stroll through the Guardian building. I think tours are available too.
If you’re staying overnight downtown, don’t go to the Pontchartrain. I’d also stay away from the Holiday Inn Express. Hilton Garden Inn is solid and affordable. Greektown might be a fun place to stay if the price is right.

IMHO,
Lafayette Coney Island (at Lafayette and Michigan Ave., just off Cadillac Square and a few minutes’ walk from the stadium) is an absolute must-visit. That’s the quintessential Detroit restaurant/greasy spoon.
The Old Shillelagh (Monroe and Brush, in Greektown) tends to elicit strong reactions from people, but I think it’s the most fun bar to visit before and after the game. Greektown has a buch of good restaurants; The Golden Fleece is my favorite, but your mileage may vary.
If you’re a casino guy, the new MGM Grand is pretty freakin’ spectacular, and a nice place to stay, too.
I think you’ll like Comerica. Detroit itself has had better days, but lots and lots of us absolutely love it. Hope you do too.

OH
And if you’re looking to add a Tigers hat or somesuch to your collection, don’t buy it at the stadium; go to the Detroit Athletic Company (1744 Michigan Ave., right across the street from the old Tiger Stadium.) Place is like fantasyland for Tigers fans.

I still have not managed to hit that place during open business hours
Regarding tickets: If you can’t find anything super cheap, I’d recommend Pavillion seats in LF. Puts you pretty close to the field and you get a nice view of downtown looking toward RF. $16 bucks a pop.
