BYOBYB: Off-Day Open Thread
One more day remains in the Detroit Tigers' All-Star break. (This year, we don't have to hear any complaints from Jim Leyland about how most other teams get that Thursday off while the Tigers have to play.) But four days without baseball can make a fan twitchy. We're here to try and help you through that.
Welcome to "BYOBYB," the off-day open thread where you can chat about anything you'd like: Your Detroit Tigers, Major League Baseball, Detroit sports, food, movies, TV, food, lawn care tips, etc.
Possible topics for the afternoon?
- Was the rest of the country introduced to Curtis Granderson on Tuesday night? With the slow day in sports and a lot of talk about the All-Star Game, Grandy got a lot of publicity for his triple and game-winning run. Or do most fans already know about Granderson because of his blogs for ESPN and Yahoo! over the past couple of years?
- Carlos Guillen went 0-for-3 for the second straight game on his rehab assignment. Does this matter at all?
- Did anyone have to negotiate I-75 this morning after last night's tanker truck crash?
- And of course, we're about two weeks from the trade deadline. What would you like to see the Tigers do? What do you realistically think they can accomplish? (Eye of the Tigers' interview with Ben Nicholson-Smith of MLB Trade Rumors might give you a few ideas. Although I think his read on the Tigers' needs is off.)
- Those of you on Facebook probably know by now that you can choose "custom URLs" for yourself. Now, you can do the same for fan pages. And BYB has a Facebook page, but "blessyouboys" is not available. This, of course, is an outrage. But I still want to create a custom URL. And I was hoping you could help me out with a suggestion or two. It can't be "byb," because usernames have to be at least five characters long. Should it be "bybtigers"? Help a blogga out!
- By the way, have you become a fan of BYB on Facebook? Or followed us on Twitter? Just checking.
Of course, you can bring up anything else you want to talk about. It's "BYOBYB."
P.S. If you're new around here, have you said hello in The BYB Introduce Yourself Open Thread yet?

But
Will it be any different? Other than the name of the player? I heard the Tigers are going to release Maggs before July 31.

I'm Wiet-nostic.
Until there is proof of Wieters I’m not taking a side.

ohh, I will
I used to live there and last time I saw a game there, they were still the Anaheim Angels (I think, who the hell knows).. so it’s gonna be pretty funny
by allikazoo on Jul 16, 2009 3:01 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
They're still the California Angels as far as I am concerned.
I usually hate “state” named teams but it was much easier on me then the seemingly 80 million name/uniform changes the Halos have gone through this past decade.

I still call them the California Angels, too
Everyone knows what I mean, and it’s better than trying to accomodate to the name, logo, and color changes.
Worse than the blasted Buffalo Sabres.

Hoping to make the journey from Minot to Minneapolis for two more Tigers/Twins games in September. Was there last year for a weekend series and got to see the Tigers win them both! WOO!

That reminds me ....
I laughed until I cried the first time I watched this. May be a bit dated to people around here but in case you missed it check out Hitlers response to the Lions 0-16 season.

Oh, man
I forgot how funny that was. Of all the ‘Downfall’ remixes, this is my favorite.

Relive the 0-16 season?
I’m not a football fan, but I would think that would be akin to voluntarily poking oneself repeatedly in the eye with a sharp stick.

I have to ... I just have to
be able to laugh at it or I might get so pissed I drive up to Ford Field and start taking hostages until we start winning games again.

Did anyone hear about the Cubs fan who is going on a hunger strike
until they win 5 in a row?

Hope he has plenty of fat reserves
Because that could take a while.

I just made (I think) my first trade of the fantasy season
it’s been accepted and is now in a waiting period
Pablo Sandoval/Yovani Gallardo for Matt Holliday/Tim Lincecum
thoughts?
by Tagne13 on Jul 16, 2009 3:38 PM EDT reply actions 0 recs
Which side are you?
If I had Sandoval and Gallarado, I don’t think I’d make that trade.
by Ian Casselberry on Jul 16, 2009 6:16 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
I have Gallardo (SP) and Sandoval (C, 1B, 3B)
but I already have Soto and Wieters so I’m overloaded at C. Plus this league is very different. Besides the usual C, 1B, 2B, 3B, SS, UTIL spots, there are IF, OF, RF, CF, LF spots as well. So I was just stashing Sandoval in the IF spot…but I could put just about anyone there. This league also counts losses, and Yovani leads my team in losses which is just killing me because I am second-to-last overall in losses in the league. The rest of his numbers are good, granted, but Lincecum’s are better.
My initial offer was Sandoval (he was looking for a 1B and that was the only one I had besides Miguel Cabrera) and Erik Bedard but then he countered with this deal.
by Tagne13 on Jul 16, 2009 6:27 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
Also bear-in-mind I am in 1st place in this league by about 20 points
just looking to shake things up a bit
