Game 88 Overflow Thread

Well, the Tigers suffered a big gut punch in the seventh inning, thanks to Joel Zumaya.  And it doesn't look good with Mariano Rivera surely set to pitch in the ninth.  But the top of the Detroit order will come to the plate, so maybe it could get interesting.

Yankees 5, Tigers 3 with one out in the eighth inning.

I was gonna comment on the July 26 game in the other thread

but this thread is the cool new thing, so …

I will be at that game. 2nd game this year. Let’s hope the White Sux … suck.

As I was telling Kurt

Almost every time I’ve tried to start early on writing a recap, I’ve had to scrap it because the game turned.

by Ian Casselberry on Jul 17, 2009 11:06 PM EDT reply actions

So...

What do the Tigers do with Zumaya? I’ve officially seen enough, I never want to see him pitch again, much less for the Tigers… Well maybe for the Yankees or Indians.

by ZWC11 on Jul 17, 2009 11:06 PM EDT reply actions

That's what I was thinking...

But wouldn’t they have used them already? He’s really looked pretty bad in almost all of his outings.

by ZWC11 on Jul 17, 2009 11:08 PM EDT up reply actions

Sorry, meant to say wouldn't they have sent him down already

I’m listening to music at the same time as trying to concentrate on the game as well as post a comment. My mind gets jumbled

by ZWC11 on Jul 17, 2009 11:09 PM EDT up reply actions

put him in the dog house?

this is pure speculation, but I think his problem is more attitude than mental. it seems he just doesn’t want to learn how to pitch and just wants to prove how awesome he is. the problem is that other teams have figured him out and will take the 103 mph walk

by murrajo on Jul 17, 2009 11:09 PM EDT up reply actions

did anyone notice

practically none of his pitches were 100mph+ tonight

by allikazoo on Jul 17, 2009 11:11 PM EDT up reply actions

I noticed that too

I wonder if the Yankee Stadium radar gun had anything to do with that.

by Ian Casselberry on Jul 17, 2009 11:12 PM EDT up reply actions

Verlander struggled last year and the beginning of this year.

They let him pitch through it. With strongheaded guys like Verlander or Zumaya, a lot of times they won’t accept help until they fail. But as I said in the first thread, this was an odd sort of struggle cuz he normally doesn’t give up strings of hits like that, he didn’t walk anyone until Swisher, and why he decided to throw a low fastball to Teixiera is beyond me.

But as long as a guy’s not old or injured, there’s always a solution to be had.

When I first read that I thought it said “Manny wins” and I wondered why you were talking about the Dodgers. Stupid sleep deprivation.

Can I ask a question?

How much of Mariano Rivera nowadays is strictly mental? As in, he gets into guys’ head versus his pitch doing the work? Granderson got himself into a favorable count, and yet flied out harmlessly.

by SabreRoseTiger on Jul 17, 2009 11:19 PM EDT reply actions

That's a good question

But I have to think if Rivera’s cutter wasn’t still moving, major league hitters would pound it.

by Ian Casselberry on Jul 17, 2009 11:20 PM EDT up reply actions

I'll bet that plays a part with weaker hitters

they probably psych themselves out.
good hitters probably are not so effected

Why do we suck against the Yankees?`

It’s not like they’re that good, I’m confident we’re a much better team. I think teams lose to them because of all of the hype and they’re all intimidated.

by ZWC11 on Jul 17, 2009 11:24 PM EDT reply actions

better question

can we just skip the 7th innings against them? Those don’t tend to go well

by Kurt Mensching on Jul 17, 2009 11:25 PM EDT up reply actions

Can't the game just end when the Starters come out?

We’d have the best record in the AL if that was the case.

by ZWC11 on Jul 17, 2009 11:27 PM EDT up reply actions

The odd thing is...

My Personal Baseball Guru is a Yankees fan and the Tigers scare him more than any other team. He’s continually telling me that the Tigers play the Yankees tough.

I would agree with that, and it makes me sick that Zoom is the new Grilli.

"Stupidity has a certain charm - ignorance does not"

by Zappatista on Jul 17, 2009 11:28 PM EDT up reply actions

As bad as it looks right now...

I still think four weeks is too small of a sample size to declare him a resounding failure. After all, Verlander struggled all last year plus this April, and look at him now. If Zoom needs to be moved out of setup duties or down to the minor leagues while he gets it figured out, fine. But you don’t give up on an arm like that so quickly.

What makes me sick is how bad the Tigers looked against, of all people, Phil freakin’ Hughes.

http://tigersamateuranalysis.blogspot.com

by SabreRoseTiger on Jul 17, 2009 11:38 PM EDT up reply actions

In those same four weeks that Zumaya's been mostly terrible

Phil Hughes has been mostly outstanding.

I do think starters get more of a chance to work themselves out than relievers, just based on the greater opportunity that more innings provide.

And I agree that Zumaya still has too good an arm to just completely give up on. But he can’t be trusted with a lead right now. Moving him to mop-up duty or letting him try to figure it out in Toledo seem to be the Tigers’ best current options.
