Game 92: Mariners at Tigers
Seattle Mariners at Detroit Tigers, Jul 22, 2009 7:05 PM EDT
Felix Hernandez (10-3, 2.51) vs.
Armando Galarraga (5-8, 5.09), 7:05 p.m. EST
Any chance for another slugfest at the CoPa tonight?
Felix Hernandez might have something to say about that. King Felix hasn't lost in his past 10 starts, giving up more than two earned runs in only one of those games. (In seven of those outings, he's allowed one run or less.) On the road this season, he has a 6-1 record and 1.97 ERA in 11 starts. Earlier this season, Hernandez faced the Tigers in Seattle, allowing three runs and seven hits over six innings, adding six strikeouts.
Armando Galarraga seemed to be making some progress in his past two or three starts. That is, until his last game before the All-Star break, during which he gave up four runs and nine hits to the Indians in six innings. In 10 starts at home this season, Galarraga has a 3-4 record and 4.97 ERA. He faced the Mariners once last season at Safeco Field, allowing one run and five hits over six innings.
Brandon Inge is out of the lineup tonight, resting a left knee with a "75% torn" tendon in it. Inge doesn't plan on going to the DL, however, unless he'd be able to fully heal in 15 days. Barring that, he's going to tough it out and plans to be in the lineup tomorrow afternoon. Ryan Raburn fills in tonight at third base.
And are you ready for a lineup with Clete Thomas batting cleanup? That's what we're getting tonight, Tiger Town.

So, there's a report we're scouting Holliday.
If we can somehow get him for a couple of position prospects, then I would do it. Or maybe Perry for Holliday. I don’t know.

Cabrera is a first baseman. One of the best first basemen in the AL.
Also, Brandon just said that he would not go on the 15-day DL unless they could fix absolutely everything in that time. Which they couldn’t.

"Be kind, for everyone you meet is fighting a great battle." -- Philo of Alexandria
yeah, different places suggest different things to mix with the vinegar
so I thought I’d see if anyone had experience
not with copper
Although I do know that you can deorderize a smelly drain by dumping down a half-cup or so of baking soda, adding another half-cup of white vinegar, letting it foam for a few minutes, and then flushing it down with hot water.
I didn’t think it would actually work, but it couldn’t do any damage, so I tried it – and it really did take care of the odor in the sink.

Last night, in Sault Ste Marie...
I made the bartender turn on the Tigers game.
I started discussing Tigers with some people sitting at the bad but I think I started getting too analytical about it with them and it got to be over their head. They probably only know Verlander and Cabrera.
Its sad when people
don’t get it. I work with this chick and I am always talking about the Tigers, so she said let’s go to a game. I got tickets for when the Cubbies were in town and we went to that game when it was like 95 in the shade. So anyway, Maggs was up and hit that home off of Lilly and everyone started cheering and yelling. I looked and she was just sitting in the seat and when I sat down she asked me “what happened, did someone do something good?” She later admitted she had no idea who was who and what team was up and when.

this one is for work
But it’s very easy to bake – just ask Chik. She’s made a couple already this week.

"Be kind, for everyone you meet is fighting a great battle." -- Philo of Alexandria

But I’m too lazy to bake. Not to mention I suck at it. I once forgot half of the sugar for my sugar cookies.
you could do this
I’m a lazy baker too, but I can handle this cake – that’s why I like it.
If a recipe has too many ingredients or too much measuring, I don’t even bother. I like ones that use things in packages so there isn’t a lot of raw ingredient left over.
"Be kind, for everyone you meet is fighting a great battle." -- Philo of Alexandria
no, but here it is again
—one box plain white cake mix (I use the store brand ‘cause at the Meijer where I shop it’s only 85 cents)
—three large eggs
—one pint of premium ice cream, melted (you need two cups, and the cheaper stuff has too much air in it and deflates) – so far Cherry Garcia from Ben & Jerry’s is a thumbs up, and so is choclate fudge brownie
Preheat the over to 350 degrees F.
Spray a 13″ × 9″ pan with cooking spray. Or wipe it with vegetable oil. Or wipe it with a margarine wrapper.
In a big bowl, mix the melted ice cream, eggs, and cake mix. If you have a beater it will be easier, but you can just use a wooden spoon and stir and stir and stir and stir – it’s tiring but it still works. The batter is really thick.
Pour it in the pan and spread it to the edges, and bake for about 38 to 42 minutes or until it pulls away from the edges of the pan and bounces back when you press it. Let it cool and frost it if you want to.
It’s very moist and hard to overbake.
Good luck. :-)

Though I’m pessimistic at this point.
Could I make an observation?
It seems that recently, the better Armando pitches, the crappier the bullpen pitches. This makes no sense. Why does the bullpen hate Galarraga?
Seay it isn’t so!

Nice to hear the White Sox are losing
But this should have been a perfect night to gain a game….not over yet, though.

I like the SquanderBusters shirt...but...
can we get one that has Walks with a line through it? Or does Throw Strikes suffice?
I hate walks.
Apparently not.
Maybe they’re hoping he’ll get on base and his speed will do some good.

Since he pitched against the Tigers?

20 for 20....Cant argue with that....
….Atdsma aint perfect like he is

Just because he gets the job done doesn't mean there isn't room for improvement.
So yes. You can argue with that.
Even Mariano Rivera isn't perfect
"It's designed to break your heart. The game begins in the spring, when everything is new again, and it blossoms in the summer, filling the afternoons and evenings, and then as soon as the chill rains come, it stops, and leaves you to face the fall alone". A. Bartlett Giamatti

Dammit, Tigers.

I don't know the literal translation,
but I think the fact that it begins with “woe” makes me inclined to agree.
This loss....
is a perfect microcosm of what ails this team. ’Mando pitched his ass off, the bullpen could not bail him out of one walk, and we cannot drive in runs.
Go Rays.
Against Felix Hernandez...
A lot of teams cannot drive in runs. We knew it would likely be a low-scoring game.

Which is why the first inning squanderage looms as large as Mount Everest.

Why....
……hes having a down year….Shouldnt have to give much
by BennieBladesFan on Jul 22, 2009 10:17 PM EDT up reply actions
Why?
He’s not left-handed, and all his numbers are down this year.

I keep wondering about Luke Scott
He IS left-handed, is hitting .300 (and hits left-handed pitching pretty well), and has power (Don’t we all know about that?). The folks over at MLB Trade Rumors don’t think very highly of him, though, so maybe there’s something I don’t know.

This team is going to drive me to drink.
And I don’t drink, so it will be ugly.
On the positive side, Armando pitched great. And I’m glad he didn’t get saddled with the loss.

Damn it Rays!
Why can’t you pitch like you did last year? (Except against us, of course).

Well...
They hung a blown save and a loss on Bobby Jenks last night (and almost did it on Monday). We’ll have to hope they can do it again.

Well...
While I maintain that both Verlander and Jackson could have pitched better at Yankee Stadium, Galarraga truly deserved better. Bobby Seay picked a most inconvenient time to serve one up.

VERY inconvenient
And it was a very impressive home run, too.
No wonder Seay hid his face in his hand after it cleared the fence. He had to feel like shit after that.

Weak internet at the lake, but FSN-D! Yah for me...boooo for Seay..and the offense.

I never picture him having an accent so when he opens his mouth I’m always like… “whaaaaaa??”
I noticed that too

So do I
I really hope his knees don’t pose a problem for him at all.
by kendra.michelle on Jul 22, 2009 10:49 PM EDT up reply actions
I'm fine with him trying to play through it...
As long as:
A) He can’t do any further damage to the tendons in his knees.
B) He still can produce both offensively and defensively at a decent level.
Shame it had to happen this year, though.

I am much more concerned about defense at this point.
The offense, poor as it is, cannot cover for any free outs.
welp off to mope
talk to you guys later. might not be around tomorrow night due to other plans. pfffft.
The thought occured to me...
This ain’t the first time this has happened to Armando. In fact, the exact same thing happened in his lone start against Seattle last year (although he pitched a lot better tonight than he did at Safeco).

And, that's it.
Longoria retired. The lead is back to one.
Tonight may be our last night alone in first.
