Game 99: Tigers at Rangers
Detroit Tigers at Texas Rangers, Jul 28, 2009 8:05 PM EDT
Luke French (1-1, 2.22) vs.
Doug Mathis (0-1, 1.64), 8:05 p.m. EST
EDIT (6:30 p.m.): Vincente Padilla was scratched as the Rangers' starter, as he's still feeling weak from the flu. Doug Mathis (0-1, 1.64) will pitch in his place. This will be only his second start of the season. Last time Mathis tried that, it didn't go so well, as he gave up five runs (four earned) and seven hits in an eventual 9-0 loss to Toronto. He's never faced the Tigers.
The Rangers also called up pitcher Guillermo Moscoso, whom you might remember was the key piece the Tigers gave up to acquire Gerald Laird back in December.
Could Luke French have looked at the Tigers' offensive output last night and gone straight for the nearest adult beverage? Because the rookie could have won his last three starts if his lineup had scored more than two runs for him. (He's not alone among the Tigers' starting pitchers, of course.) This will be French's third start on the road. He has yet to earn a decision away from home, despite a 2.79 ERA.

I can't imagine many circumstances in which I would avoid catching a foul ball.
But if the pitcher has/had swine flu, it would certainly make me dodge them.
Good news

Every single one of you has either had success in the big leagues or is talented enough to succeed in the big leagues. Therefore, there is NO REASON why you can’t be successful right now. So SNAP OUT OF IT!

Here's something REALLY depressing...
Mathis went four innings. Therefore, he is not eligible for the win. Therefore, if they do not at least tie this game, Jason Grilli will get the win.

I’m out of chocolate, have to get up early tomorrow, and this game is depressing. I’ll keep hoping for a tremendous comeback in the last couple innings that I read about in the morning.
G’night, all.

So glad Im not around to watch this
Typical Tigers; following up an impressive three wins against the White Sox with three pathetic losses. One step forward, one step backward. It’s all they ever do.
And to think that cat in the Detroit news just declared this team “worth investing in emotionally.” Bull****, this team is never worth investing in emotionally. All they ever do is **** up.

The good teams have winning streaks
like 6, 7 or 8 wins in a row. What’s the most we’ve had this year….6 games? Win 2, lose 2, win 1 lose 2, win 3, lose 3. OMG, I’m going to bed.

On the flipside...
I think the longest losing streak we’ve had is four. Let’s keep it that way.

Back for one more comment
1. Pull the trigger, DD. Do something.
2. Time for an eruption from Mount Leyland. Someone has to shake these guys up. I don’t dog this team for its effort, but the last two nights they’ve seemed to accept their own poor play. And that’s what it’s been. Poor.
What? You told me they needed to look in the mirror!

Am I correct in thinking that JV has never given up a run at Ranger Ballpark?
I believe he’s only made two starts there. One was his first start of ’06, and the other was the start right before his no-hitter, and I could be wrong, but I think the Rangers were shut out in both those games.

The Dodgers and Cardinals are in a 0-0 tie going into the bottom of the sixth at Busch Stadium. The Cardinals have one hit. The Dodgers have eight hits, but they’re 1-for-7 with RISP and have left nine men on base. The Tigers only left 5 men on base for the entire game.
