Game 99: Tigers at Rangers

Detroit Tigers at Texas Rangers, Jul 28, 2009 8:05 PM EDT

  Luke French (1-1, 2.22) vs.   Doug Mathis (0-1, 1.64), 8:05 p.m. EST

EDIT (6:30 p.m.): Vincente Padilla was scratched as the Rangers' starter, as he's still feeling weak from the flu.  Doug Mathis (0-1, 1.64) will pitch in his place.  This will be only his second start of the season.  Last time Mathis tried that, it didn't go so well, as he gave up five runs (four earned) and seven hits in an eventual 9-0 loss to Toronto.  He's never faced the Tigers.

The Rangers also called up pitcher Guillermo Moscoso, whom you might remember was the key piece the Tigers gave up to acquire Gerald Laird back in December.

Could Luke French have looked at the Tigers' offensive output last night and gone straight for the nearest adult beverage?  Because the rookie could have won his last three starts if his lineup had scored more than two runs for him.  (He's not alone among the Tigers' starting pitchers, of course.)  This will be French's third start on the road.  He has yet to earn a decision away from home, despite a 2.79 ERA.

I can't imagine many circumstances in which I would avoid catching a foul ball.

But if the pitcher has/had swine flu, it would certainly make me dodge them.

I've run out of rationalizations.

When the bats went silent, I thought “Well, at least the pitching is holding.” When the pitching went south, I thought “Well at least they’re still playing good defense.”

I’m down to “Well at least their grounds crew does a good job.”

I can see how lack of offense would causing the pitching to deteriorate...
