Around SBN: Odds On Peyton Manning's Next Home Includes Three Teams

Deflated, Defeated: Rangers 7, Tigers 3

If the Tigers aren't going to put much effort into trying to win a game, how much effort should I put into a recap?

This one started off promisingly, with Detroit pouncing on an early scoring opportunity, instead of frittering away yet another chance.  With two on and two out, Ramon Santiago smacked a double into the opposite field gap to drive in the first run of the game.  Then Dusty Ryan followed that up with a single that brought in two more runs.  A three-run lead for Luke French!

French got so excited that he gave the lead right back in the bottom half of the inning.  With two outs in the inning, but two runners on, three straight Ranger batters got base hits.  A single, triple, and double, to be specific.  French almost gave up the cycle in one inning.  What he did give up was four runs, and the Tigers went flat after that.

Detroit put two runners on to lead off the fourth, but the next three hitters went down.  And from then until the ninth inning, another 12 Tigers batters failed to reach base.  Perhaps adding to the indignity was former Tiger Jason Grilli recording six of those outs in the fifth and sixth innings, which turned out to be good for the win.  (Another former Tiger, Guillermo Moscoso, closed out the game in the ninth.)  Throw in three errors, and that pretty much sums up the night.  It wasn't pretty.

Comment of the Night:

On the bright side...

We’ve only left 4 guys on base!

And your runner-up, but you have to read the comment directly before it for context.

I wish I had some clearly thought-out, emotionally grounded comments tonight...

…but I’m not coming up with anything. At this point, I’m just glad my brain has recovered from multimedia overload. As the game ended, I was sitting on the floor in front of a laptop, trying to type comments here, eat dinner, watch the postgame show on TV, listen to the postgame show on the radio (yes, I actually do that with regularity), and keep the cat away from my dinner, and all the while, there was a computer with iTunes on the other side of the room blaring out Phil Collins, Santana, and Rod Stewart (the iTunes thing was out of my control). So it was all a bit much.

But I will say this: In their last 3 games, the Tigers have scored one run, then two, and now three. Does that mean they’ll score four runs next time? Hey, if Verlander pitches the way he has for most of the season, that should be enough to win.

What is this?

I leave the country and the Tigers go 4-2. I come back, they go 0-3. This is a monumentally large bottle of suck.

Done.....need Dunn

The comment of the day SHOULD have been Ian’s opening statement:

“If the Tigers aren’t going to put much effort into trying to win a game, how much effort should I put into a recap?”

Exactly my feelings.

Sitting here in DC I don’t get to see many Tiger games, but I listen to as many as possible on XM, but I have never seen a team just seemingly give up in games as often as the Tigers this year do. There have been some great comebacks of course, but now it seems once they get down 2 or 3 runs, it’s just toast.

Now the good news – if you had told me that we would be in the lead by a game or two on August 1 at the beginning of the year, I would have ran up and hugged you like a long-lost poodle. So let’s start from here….we need Dunn. Not Willingham, not Scutaro, Dunn. He has single-handedly raised the averages of Zimmerman and Willingham here in DC – just cuz people are afraid of him. Put him behind Cabrera and watch the sparks fly. Willingham is good, but he’s .260, 17hr, 83rbi good without Dunn around him. Those are Ryan Raburn numbers….

In my opinion...

when the Tigers lose it reminds me of last year and Edgar Renterror. There was squandering last year by names that I would rather not repeat.

Cabrerra is our best?

Cabrerra is our best but when was the last time he helped the team with his bat? Most of his hits are without risp and he gets them with raw talent, no thinking. He lunges at balls two feet outside and lines them to right field. With runners on he gives away his at bat. If the two previous batters have walked on 8 straight pitches Cabrerra will swing at the first pitch two feet out of the strike zone and hit into a double play or pop up. If he doesn’t learn the art of hitting he will never be close to worth what he makes. And sadly he is our best. Right now, with men on base I would rather see Dusty Ryan at the plate than any of the others. Sad.
The Tiger’s radio announcers do a pretty good job of telling it like it is. The TV guys are hard to take. I really do not think that either of them are really Tiger fans. It just doesn’t seem to bother them when the Tigers lose. Last night Mario seemed more excited when the Ranger’s got the extra base hits than when the Tigers did something well. We don’t expect an overly partisan broadcast but for god’s sake show a little passion once in a while and act like you give a damm.

We’ve beaten Cliff Lee three times, but we’ve lost to Pavano twice. Galarraga’s pitched well enough recently that he deserves to oppose someone the Tigers can score runs against, for a change.

I noticed that over the weekend that the Sox are playing the Yankees and the Twins are playing the Angels. And of coarse we are playing those stinkin Indians. Quoting MLB.com
“Joe Crede, Twins

Why he’s available: If the Twins are out of contention by the Trade Deadline, it’s possible that they could attempt to move Crede, who will be a free agent at the end of the ’09 season.

Will he go? Crede’s prior back problems might scare some clubs away, and while he’s been productive with the Twins, it means his $2.5 million contract could reach near $7 million thanks to performance bonuses. "

I’d take him. Doesn’t seem like a whole lot of money considereing what DD has spent a “basura” in the past

Crede

But the Twins aren’t out of contention by the trade deadline, as we of all people ought to know. And there is no way Minnesota will someone to the Tigers who might be useful thsi year.

just a thought

that’s all. we will probably end up empty handed…..

Well not to pop your bubble

but if any one of those 8 days fell December 25th, you might get a pair of socks or something…

I woudln't read too much into it

The Tigers seem to be the best team at plugging leaks to the press when they’re up to something. You never hear a peep and then whamm-o, trade happens.

I was just thinking that too.

I remember being pretty shocked about pudge, unless I was just out of the loop

I was just invited to go to the

Orioles vs Tigers on Wednesday Aug 5th. I was thinking I wonder if Luke Scott will be playing with us, against us or not at Comerica at all that day.

I was more surprised at the Mariners and Pirates trade.

Cleveland has been dismantling their team and Toronto wanted wouldn’t budge for Halladay. I think the Jays are stuck with Roy.

by 13194013 on Jul 29, 2009 3:06 PM EDT reply actions

Yeah, everyone's talking about Halladay being the big trade

but it seems like no one wants to give the Jays what they want and the Jays won’t take what’s being offered to them.

by kendra.michelle on Jul 29, 2009 3:07 PM EDT up reply actions

The salary is high but the fact everyone found out Halladay wants to test the free agent market is what really made people go hellz naw.

That’s what I think. No one wanted a very high priced rental with how prospects are being viewed at the moment.

The Wladimir trade is still suspect

But I think the M’s are going to put their heads down and try to make a run on that Wild Card.

otherwise i’d be REALLY bored at work

When the Weaver trade happened I swore I was done with the Tigers.

It brought back horrible Juan Gonzalez flashbacks. I couldn’t stay away though. Stupid love of Detroit Tigers baseball.

Hey

Leyland’ll occasionally do his postgame interview with no shirt on, so I’ve already had the (dis)pleasure of seeing his bare chest. Usually it results in me just listening to the interview and not looking at the screen.

…but after having spent the day visiting and talking to people I haven’t seen in a long time, I feel so disconnected that it seems like last night’s game happened five weeks ago. When tonight’s game comes on I’m gonna wonder what I’ve been doing.
