Game 79: Tigers at Twins

Detroit Tigers at Minnesota Twins, Jul 3, 2009 8:10 PM EDT

  Luke French (0-0, 0.00) vs.   Kevin Slowey (10-3, 4.41), 8:10 p.m. EST

Following a 1-2 stop in Oakland, the Tigers travel to Minneapolis to play the team right behind them in the AL Central.  Will Detroit return to Detroit on Sunday night in sole possession of first place?  Or will the Twins be alongside them in the top spot?

Much like the Tigers' pitching staff did when they visited Busch Stadium, the Twins' Kevin Slowey wilted in the St. Louis heat during his last start.  Pitching just three innings (one of his shortest outings of the season), Slowey allowed five runs and six hits, including two home runs.  (Maybe we should cut him a break on those homers, however, since both of them were from Albert Pujols.  Sometimes, when you're faced with awesome, you just can't stop it.)

Slowey's record against the Tigers is 3-0 with a 4.57 ERA in four starts.  A win tonight would give him the most victories in the American League.

Luke French makes his first start for Detroit tonight, the primary thinking being that a left-hander could be useful against the Twins' lineup.  But it's not like French didn't deserve the promotion anyway.  In his past three starts with Triple-A Toledo, he allowed four earned runs over 23 innings, with 26 strikeouts versus three walks.  (Yet he didn't pick up the win in either of those games, which tells you how the Mud Hens are playing right now.)

With Toledo, French has compiled a 4-4 record and 2.98 ERA.  He appeared in two games with the Tigers back in May, coming out of the bullpen to pitch three innings, posting three strikeouts and three walks.

Twinkie Town has your SB Nation opposing view for this three-game series.  We hope your holiday weekend is off to an excellent start.

say it ain't so

unfortunately you’re right. like a huge lead

also, i'm amazingly tired

4 vs 4 kickball in a full field. i played second base/shortstop/right/center/left field. went 8/9 (with a lineout my only out) and scored 4 runs. my team won 9-8 in 5 innings. so tired…

we normally play frisbockey

ultimate frisbee with hockey nets as goals. great fun. today was a pep band scrimmage honestly. it was percussion vs BAs (tubas). us Concussionists won the day.

Tech is a strange, quirky place

Good to see you’re enjoying it.

By the way — and I know you don’t need me to tell you this — your band is a hell of a lot smarter than NMU’s. When they show up at sporting events, they seem to feel like they’re the star of the show and they have no idea how to properly integrate with the game.

As a Big10 alum, I could only shake my head at how ill-timed and out-of-place their musical selections were.

Tech’s pep band, I know, is a lot better than that.

by MackAveKurt on Jul 3, 2009 7:29 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

that's for sure

i’m actually the head “taunter” for the band. actually, last year when FSD televised the football game at the dome, our band was invited. we got there only to find out that northern’s president decreed we could not bring our instruments into the building for fear of taking their home field advantage away. so we brought in small chunks of wood, cowbells, anything we could get our hands on. and we were LOUDER than the NMU band, WITH their instruments.

also, broomball is life

by mrsunshine on Jul 3, 2009 7:37 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

I covered that game — did a column though, didn’t do the game story.

That’s a shame they didn’t let you take your instruments in, too. Because big D1 football games frequently have both bands in attendance. You would think, having the FSN — and “national” audience — crew there, having both bands playing their teams fight songs at the appropriate times would only show the rest of the state how great rivalry it is.

with or without a goalie?

I like the concept…the place I’m moving to has a city park nearby, and I know they had a field set up with mini-soccer goals…could definitely be used for something like what you describe, if we got enough people.

Aroldis Chapman

I believe DD should make a serious play on trying to get this kid. Imagine the rotation if he were to be as good as he sounds, Verlander – Chapman – Jackson – Porcello – (to be determined), for the next 5 years.

by gonk on Jul 3, 2009 7:23 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

I hate to see him go and it's sad to watch him struggle

I don’t think there is any kind of change coming from him at the plate. Only the front office knows what’s going to become of Maggs.

Welcome to Detroit>>Where the weak are killed and eaten.

I think it's a sad ending

But at this point of the season, you have to make a commitment to the team winning the division and, unfortunately, Maggs is more of a detriment than a help and shows no signs of turning it around.

off topic

I was coming out of the grocery store earlier and I heard a baby crying in the car parked next to mine. When I looked over, I saw it was in there ALONE. I called the police and right about the time they pulled up the father cam outside and he was arrested on the spot for child endangerment. Then the guy who was arrested, his mother came walking out of the family dollar, nest door to the grocery store and they cuffed her too and called CPS. I am very proud of myself. It was 11 months old and strapped in a car seat.

Magglio could be heard sobbing.

200 comments already?

Wow. Now that’s what i’m talking about…….a triple.

It's because

I am back.

The people have followed.

Not to start a contreversy

but I find it interesting that with all the hub-bub about Magglio and even Placido not hitting well at all NO ONE talks about Granderson. Is it just because of the home runs? I mean I don’t think it’s good our lead-off hitter is struggling to stay over .250

by Tagne13 on Jul 3, 2009 8:32 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

I think the difference is that

Polly and Grandy still have defensive skills

by wepri31 on Jul 3, 2009 8:33 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

And smaller contracts.

http://designaterobertson.blogspot.com

by Rogo on Jul 3, 2009 8:34 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

This.

How many times have you seen Magglio slowly stumble over to a pop into right field? He’s showing little hustle out there, in my opinion. RF is far from difficult to play, and it always seems to me he’s three to four steps behind making a decent catch, one even a slide could get him to.

by john.kmiecik on Jul 3, 2009 8:35 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Maggs

was acquired to drive ’em in. I think this is why. Everyone expects more from him.

Welcome to Detroit>>Where the weak are killed and eaten.

and he's not driving. Period!

Agreed.

His line-drive percentage is way down from previous years, but he’s still hitting RHP well. I’ve been wishing he’d be dropped in the lineup against LH starters.

by StringTheory on Jul 3, 2009 8:34 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

well his OPS is above .800, he’s getting on base more, driving runs in more, and plays gold glove level defense.

by MackAveKurt on Jul 3, 2009 8:34 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

no i think you are right

it’s because grandy has put up some power numbers (has any lead-off hitter put up MORE power?) and he is an above average defender

by Motown'sFinest on Jul 3, 2009 8:36 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

I still think it's alarming

no one in the media has come out and mentioned this….he’s a good player, sure, but .250 doesn’t cut the mustard for me….not if you’re purpose is to get on base

by Tagne13 on Jul 3, 2009 8:39 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

agreed

ideally he would bat in the 2 hole or 3 hole

I know they are patriotic and all, but I hate those red hats. They don’t match, and they are blindly bright.

by wepri31 on Jul 3, 2009 8:43 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

I don’t like them on any team. Just use the regular team colors for the hat, and place the special logo in place of the typical team logo. I don’t really understand why they’re red.

by john.kmiecik on Jul 3, 2009 8:45 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

So they can sell them.

And make more money. That’s my guess.

They do charge more for them, and claim the proceeds go toward some veteran’s charity. Unfortunately they won’t say what amount and when they were asked last year, MLB wouldn’t give a straight answer.

Obviously it's too early to judge

But if French can at least give us a sort of 5 innings 4 runs sort of deal every fifth day, where would you put our next biggest area to improve on?

Personally, I’m thinking it’s another big bat (and not, as most would say, a replacement for Galarraga).

by Motown'sFinest on Jul 3, 2009 8:45 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

ignore the 4 ER in 5 innings

i think my idea of giving us a chance to win a ball game might be slightly optimistic

by Motown'sFinest on Jul 3, 2009 8:46 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Five innings and four runs every fifth day means we need a better bullpen, stat.
