Trade Deadline Open Thread
We're moving the Open Thread to the top of the page until tonight's game begins. (It ended up not being much of a thread, with the Tigers making their move just minutes later.)
Detroit acquired Jarrod Washburn from the Mariners earlier in the day. Later on, the White Sox answered by getting Jake Peavy (again) from the Padres. (I'm catching up on the details of that now, but I would've been surprised if Kenny Williams hadn't done something. But isn't Peavy still hurt?)
So what do you think of the day? Are you disappointed that the Tigers didn't get the bat they seem to so desperately need? Or was the Washburn deal enough in your mind? I imagine we'll be getting some information as to what was close to happening or why any particular deal may have fallen through.

MLB Trade Rumors is reporting that we've got Jarrod Washburn...
However, the post is only one sentence long and it’s via a radio report, so I’ll remain skeptic for now.

I'm scared we might give up Perry or Crosby.
I said this in the last thread, but I’ll repeat it: Washburns BAbip is .245. He has a Galarraga-esque return to Earth stretch coming.
Great trade
Now go get a bat DD! I like what was done here, Robles and French really weren’t top tier prospects.
French and Robles? Wow.
I’ve never even heard of Robles (granted, I don’t follow the farm system THAT well). French made a couple of nice starts for the Tigers, but I’d think he’s a far cry from Chamberlain or Hughes, which is what the Mariners were demanding from the Yankees.

Great timing on that Open Thread, eh?
Way to go, Ian.

Nice trade
Seems like a win-win for us. Washburn won’t be offered arbitration and he has playoff experience so we get a proven lefty starter to offset the implosion of Nate Robertson. Now its time for Dombo to get us a lefty bat.

I'm so ahead of my time, my parents haven't met yet

They go and do this…. I really want to punch someone in a black cap right now….Pierzynksi will do…

Great. Best part: I just got one of my really good friends (Padres fan) a Jake Peavy jersey for his birthday.

Don't worry dude
He’s hurt. By the time he’s ready to pitch, they could be out of the race. Even if they are in it, I like our staff too. I think this race is between the Tigers and Twins.

Could always be setbacks.
At least your friend’s jersey is now a collector’s item!

I'm sure he'll love that
I, uh, haven’t given it to him yet.

not your fault he was traded
At least you aren’t giving him one with his new team. That would be worse.

that's just mean
True, maybe, but still mean. :)

Some are prospects, in their defense
And yes, Pitt has prospects. Just not many.

?!?!?!
This certainly doesn’t hurt the team this season, but I doubt it helps a whole lot either. I realize that Lucas French was probably not going to do enough to keep them in it down the stretch, but without some hitting this team isn’t going to be in it down the stretch anyway. Oh well…at least they didn’t give up too much. Really a pointless trade in my opinion.
i like this trade for the tigers
i think that it’s good for both sides. we get someone to bolster our rotation NOW and hopefully can build on porcello and some of our other rookies in the future. seattle gets a good pitcher who has the possibility of becoming a mainstay in their rotation.
also, the minnesota trade scares me because another bat for them just makes them more dangerous.
the chicago trade for peavy might work out for them because he’s under contract for a few more years, but won’t help them now because he’s injured
cleveland just gave up
suprised that the royals made no moves that i saw today.
and scott rolen is traded as well. woo!
Josh Anderson? :)

I like the Washburn trade.
Taking a vet into a September run makes me feel more comfortable. Especially considering what we gave up isnt going to rattle the core of the team. I am a little suprised that we didnt end up picking up a position player though. I suppose we will just have to wait and see what was attempted but the Tigers bats are there. We have a good enough lineup to take a serious run into the playoffs. We just need to heat up. Much easier said than done but if Maggs swing is getting better … awesome. Thames, Cabrera, Granderson, and even Guillen are coming up with some big hits. Consistant offensive performance is not something you attain by picking up one guy and down the line when the Tigers get beat 3-1 everyone will say “we should have picked up Dunn (or whoever)” but that is just BS. This lineup just needs to do what they can do and we will be fine.
If I had to pick one trade , going into today, I would have hoped they brought in a solid lefty with playoff experience and thats exactly what we got.
Peavy
is with the White Sox until 2012? Scary. I hate it when there is someone on that team that I like.
Looking at the Indians lineup… Marte at first base? Wow. Very depleted.
i'd drink if we lost
but last night was full of drinking. too full. the kind of full that makes a stomach empty…
I'm off!
Going to test the powers of the lucky shirt, as the Loons went 12 innings last night. If there are no extra innings tonight, I’ll be back around the seventh inning.
Go Tigers!

See what happens when you step away from the computer
Just walked in the door and the station on ESPN where I left it to entertain my dog, Allie. Tigers get Washburn, but haven’t even seen who we gave up.

Reading up on the Peavy deal...
it looks like essentially the same deal from earlier this season
San Diego makes out fairly well.
I also read that the talk was of Peavy returning in late-August though there may be something that Chicago saw that lead them to believe it may be a bit earlier than that.
MLB Trade Rumors.com
- White Sox will pay all of Peavy’s contract.
- The deal is the same as earlier this season, except the White Sox added one additional prospect.
- Peavy’s agent is “flabbergasted” the White Sox made this move, based on Peavy’s current condition.
Just venting
… but looking around the nret and reading what people are saying on the blogs I haven’t seen any evidence that Washburn is much of an upgrade. I’m not trying to damper things but to me the trade wasn’t all that necessary as I kinda think French could put up similar numbers to Washburn the rest of the way.. Still seems like the Tigers are as good as any in the Central so whatever. Just a ho-him trade to me.
Fine
I’ll stop the dampering and add some enthusiasm to the fire:
Christina Kahrl, Baseball Prospectus:
Jarrod Washburn is “a quality addition”, “the best starter moved around the deadline, Cliff Lee-inclusive”. The Tigers are “a tough-to-beat proposition in a short series”.
I’d add more, but it’s subscriber only content (which everyone here should get, btw- the best Sabermetric-oriented site with some of the coolest writers on the web for 35 bucks is an absolute steal). Needless to say, Chris likes the deal.

I'm hoping for the best but preparing for Juan Gonzalez!
Beyond the Box Score is pretty good too. Sky runs a good ship over there. I remember BP when it first started. Damn growing old.
Oh, and while we're at ti
Sabermetric based case for acquiring Jarrod Washburn (this isn’t very good, I’m not the brightest stathead around)
Team A acquires proven LHP with career ERA+ of 110 (95, 100, 90 ERA+’s in the past 3 years). Said pitcher has boosted his K rate slightly, while dropping his walk rate significantly and his HR rate slightly. Pitcher has put up ERA+ of 162 in a little more than half a season. Part of this is a mirage since he has a BABIP of .245, but that’s only 30 points off from his career BABIP. Pitcher is leaving a very good pitchers park with stellar OF defense, but he is going to a decent to above average pitchers park with solid OF defense. Pitcher’s FIP is 3.75, though he is getting lucky on fly balls, so it should probably be higher. That being said, lucky pitchers tend to stay lucky when they have hot streaks that last through August (see Galaraga, Armando). It is also important to note that pitcher is one of the best exchanged at the deadline, and according to some organizations (Baseball Prospectus most notably), he is the best.
For said player, Team B receives 2 prospects.
One is a tall LHP with versatile assortment of pitches but with a mediocre record in the minor leagues. His ERA+ in the 30 IP he has pitched in 2009 is 133, but he has 11 walks to 19 strikeouts with 2 HR surrendered. Decent numbers, but not world beating. His BABIP is .294, which is around average, but this is all taken during his first tour of the league, meaning his numbers could plumett once people figure out his stuff.
The other is a short LHP with above average stuff, good command. His fastball tops out at 94, and his curve flashes plus, though his changeup is nonexistant at times. Pitcher has more than a strikeout per inning, and has improved his walk and home run rate. However, pitcher is 20 years old in Hi A, with only 30 innings in Hi A ball. Pitcher’s size and lack of third pitch also mean he is probably destined for the bullpen.
So this is a classic win now move by Team A. Team B gets a fringe lefty and a decent prospect, so it’ll probably work out better for them in the long run. That being said, flags fly forever. So who cares if we gave up Lefty Grove and Mariano Riviera (hint- we didn’t) provided we win a title?

I am not sure who Christina Kahrl is... but,
both Cliff Lee and Peavy have Cy Young awards. Washburn has been mediocre the past couple of years. It is definately an upgrade for the Tigers, but when is BP ever right about anything?

The only way this is a win for Detroit...
Is if they make the playoffs. Put you best possible defense out there and pray his 6.4% HR/FB rate holds up.
Yep
I was just saying it feels kinda early to be celebrating when Chicago is only 2 games back and they just got Peavy and 6 of the last 10 games are against them.
I haven't really seen anyone celebrating
I think most here are realistic enough to realize the bats need to heat up if we are to do anything.
Not really celebrating I guess
more like overly excited. If most were realistic enough they’d realize it’s just Jarrod Washburn. I am anxious to see how he does on Monday against Baltimore because he dominated them in 2 starts this year for Seattle including a one hit shutout. How he does will be a big clue of what to expect for the next 2-3 months. I hope it goes well, obviously.

Sorry to rain on ur Parade.
When I joined from another SB Nation blog doesn’t matter. In the winners and losers sense of trades Tigers fans are acting like winners when in reality the jury is still out. Also, in reality the Tigers didn’t get THAT much better. I just think this will end up with Tigers fans wishing they had Jarrod Washburn Lite and $3.5 million back when the seasons over.

I hesitate to accuse anyone of trolling
But you’ve done nothing but comment how much Tigers fans are gonna hate this trade. Seriously? I’ve explained the stats earlier and why I still think it’s a good deal, yet you won’t bother responding there. A reasoned argument other than all your pessimistic nay-saying would be nice- it’s rude to make snide comments like you have been.
which means he pitches one, at most two games against the Tigers?
There’s a reason he didn’t want to come to the AL in the first place, hopefully he was right the first time around…

Just two games???
Ironically that’s how many games they’re back. Those 2 games could mean all or nothing.
