A Trade! Tigers Get Jarrod Washburn
According to MLB Trade Rumors, the Detroit Tigers have acquired pitcher Jarrod Washburn from the Seattle Mariners. MLBTR cites a report from Mike Salk of ESPN Radio 710 AM in Seattle.
Washburn has an 8-6 record and 2.64 ERA in 20 starts with the Mariners this season. He's lost only twice in his last 10 starts, and was arguably the third-best starting pitcher available on the trade market after Roy Halladay and Cliff Lee.
No word on who the Tigers may have given up yet. This post is probably going to be updated.
UPDATE: Pitchers Luke French and Mauricio Robles are heading to Seattle.
Robles is a left-hander who's pitched in 18 games this season between Single-A Lakeland and West Michigan, compiling an 8-6 record and 4.24 ERA. The number that raises an eyebrow (and seems to have Mariners fans excited) is the 111 strikeouts he's thrown in 91.1 innings.

Posted in the other thread- Robles
http://firstinning.com/players/Mauricio-Robles-a
Decent K-BB ratio, K’ing over a guy per inning. Scouting- he’s supposedly got a good FB and an above average CB, but a bad changeup and mediocre control/command. He’s also got size problems, which means his future may be in the bullpen.
Also, let it be known
Happy dance time.

Didn’t give up much. Great move.

BP's Kevin Goldstien:
“New #Mariners P Mauricio Robles is a small lefty with a big arm, 90-94 mph with +command, breaking ball flashes plus, prob. bullpen in end.”
Plus command?
Heard his command was mediocre…
Still, a bullpen arm for a good SP- that’s a good deal.

Type A
Washburn is projecting as a Type A free agent. If he’s offered arbitration and walks, Tigers get two draft picks as compensation. Very nice.
MLB Network says Robles is a young, somewhat newly converted OF.

MLBTR says he projects as a type B.
I don’t know if he will reach A threshold if he continues to put up the same kind of numbers the rest of the season.

He will be a A....
….after he gets another 8 wins with detroit!!!!

Type B
It’ll be fun when he gets a 1 year – 15 Mil contract in arbitration and takes it. He’d absolutly murder us in Arb with that low era and his 10 mil contract this season.
He’d be worth about 1/2 that much on the open market this off season.
Yes, this is an improved pitcher. But this is still Jarrod Washburn. His ERA has been deflated due to a helpful ballpark, a fantastic outfield defense (that Detroit can’t match up with), and a completely unsustainable limitation on home run balls.
When Jarrod Washburn is being successful because he is limiting home runs on his fly balls you should be very afraid of that continuing.
What should be expected of Washburn going forward? A 4 to 4.4 ERA. Typical Washburn.
So DD traded a young Washburn that’ll be under team control for 6 years for a couple of months of this “new and improved” version. Oh and threw in 1 more interesting young arm as well.
Not sure how Detroit won this deal.

We dealt a young 4/5 starter and a potential bullpen piece for an expensive guy who will probably regress a little. For a win-now move, though, I like it. They may win in the long term, but I doubt either Robles or French turns into John Smoltz. Maybe Jarrod Washburn and Fernando Rodney (a good RP?)…

They don't see French how we see him
We see a soft tossing lefty, which reminds us of Robertson, they see a young Washburn. The Tigers didn’t have high hopes for Frenchy and I never saw much more potential then bullpen. It’s a good trade for us.

MAYBE top 10, probably not though
either way, still a huge piece that we needed badly and will make our top 3 starters tough to face
I go to the grocery store and come back to this.
WE didn’t give up much, but poor Rod has three months’ worth of “French” references down the drain.
Contract Year?
Last time Washburn pitched as well as this year was in a contract year (2005), I believe.
Turned on SportsCenter and saw this news on the crawl
knew I had to immediately get on here. Great addition for us! I gotta admit I’m going to miss Frenchie a little bit haha. I’m going to the game on Monday and French was originally going to start that game, so maybe I’ll see Washburn firsthand! I liked Frenchy, and I totally did not envision a trade like this, but after they said they were gonna need a lot of stuff to pry Washburn, this looks like the steal of the century. Yay Dave, you didn’t suck for once!
I love this deal
We all know the Tigers have a weak farm system. When I saw that they traded for Washburn, I was pumped, but was afraid to see the prospects they give up. I figured one of Sizemore, Crosby, or Iorg would be in the deal. Instead, they dealt two prospects who didn’t make Baseball Prospectus’ top 11 Tigers prospects. This is a masterstroke, and it leaves the cupboard stocked for another deal.

Depends on a few things.
The HR rate he’s putting up is going to regress eventually. You can try to hope that it doesn’t happen this season.
Is the Tigers outfield defense as good as the Mariners? Anderson, Thomas, and Granderson are a pretty nice OF defense but its just not the same as Seattle.
Also, Safeco is death to flyballs and right-handed hitters. So that was a huge advantage Wash had that is now gone as well.
We have, hands down, the best top 3 in the rotation if he indeeds keeps it up.

Because we're distracted by his "shiny ERA"
And we gave up something good for him.
I’ll say it again- I’d take his FIP of 3.75. I’d take his career ERA of 4. I’d probably be okay with what Cameron says he should be at (4.4). Because we gave up a #4 starter and a bullpen arm.

FIP is deflated due to that HR-rate.....
The truth of the matter is the big difference in the deal is player control.
Give Wash the benefit of the doubt and say that he’s an upgrade over French, well your veteran #4 starter is gone in 2 months while they’ve got that #4 French for 6 years…. AND a nice bullpen arm.

It's just excitement for having gotten anything remotely useful for Washburn
When a year ago we couldn’t have gotten anything for him, and yesterday we were being told we were probably going to be stuck with him. We’re seeing it as trading a 35 year old expensive Washburn for a 23 year old cheap (with 5 years of team control) Washburn 2.0 and a nice live arm with upside in Robles as a bonus. People are excited because we managed to immediately replace Washburn and add something else. Of course, once everyone calms down and remembers that we hate Washburn and thus we’ll probably be equally frustrated with Washburn 2.0 they won’t be as excited, but nonetheless it’s a good move for the M’s.
No one’s terribly excited about French, we’re just excited that we actually got something for Washburn.
by Terminator X on Jul 31, 2009 6:52 PM EDT up reply actions
They are excited
Because the difference in ability between French and Washburn is negligible while the difference in how long each player will be with their new respective teams is massive.
Wash may push you guys into the playoffs this year. That is FANTASTIC!
But no matter what he did he wasn’t going to help the Ms there, they are just too far out. So they swapped him for 6 years of his replacement. Congrats. For a rebuilding team that is a good reason to be happy.

"Be kind, for everyone you meet is fighting a great battle." -- Philo of Alexandria
This means they wouldn't be getting Scutaro
Which means I still think we can make a good push for him.
Why?
We wouldn’t have to give up too much to get him. He can play some 3B for us this season to allow Inge to take days off frequently or to do on the DL. Then we can re-sign him next season and he can be our new starting SS, for roughly the same amount as Adam Everett would cost. He is better than Everett.
Here's what DodgersDan says:
“Most underrated pitcher in trade talks. Washburn has been putting together an amazing season. Great move by the Tigers. I was hoping the Dodgers would move on him if they couldn’t manage to get Halladay.
… can we have Edwin Jackson back? ;)"
I like reading this stuff, cuz it makes us seem in a really enviable position.
lips are sealed :)
"Be kind, for everyone you meet is fighting a great battle." -- Philo of Alexandria
Read the last two sentances
“Cabrera, 34, is hitting .280/.318/.365 on the season in 448 plate appearances. He has $1.75MM remaining on his contract, once you factor in a $250K bonus for being dealt. Though he profiles as a Type A free agent after the season, Cabrera’s agent wisely negotiated a clause disallowing his club to offer arbitration. So, no draft picks for the team for the loss and no impediment to signing Cabrera from the player’s point of view.”
WHY LUKE SCOTT???
He can’t play defense…potentially a 1b for orioles next year and super religious, which may not bode well with the clubhouse. do not get him.
Vinny Rottino

The Lookout Landing folk think we are retarded for thinking this is a good trade for us
They are wrong. I see this trade being pretty much even in terms of improvement on both sides. Luke French was good this year, but he showed no signs of being amazing or even continuing his good pitching ways for the rest of the year. Of course, he could very well mature into a great pitcher, but we also have Ricky Porcello who has a better chance of doing that. No loss there for us, potential gain for the M’s. I had heard nothing of Robles until today, so that proves that he wasn’t nearly the best prospect we had in our system. From what I have heard, he is good, but needs a good deal of work. Have fun M’s with him, whether he ends up good or bad.
On to Washburn. The Tigers needed a quality left-handed pitcher. We also needed some veteran presence. Aside from Carlos Guillen, we are a team full of really good young guys. Washburn adds both of those qualities instantly. The M’s fans are saying that he was having a fluke of a season and that his “sparkling ERA” some of us have raved about is an abnormality. This doesn’t matter. The odds that we keep him for a long time seem low. We do not need him, right now, to stick with the Tigs for a long time. We need a guy like him to ensure that we get to the playoffs, have a brick wall of good pitching come playoff time, and fill the requirements I noted in the first two lines of this paragraph. If he does this, the Tigers received today just as much as the M’s did. Who knows; if he continues to rock like he has so far this season for the rest of the season, we may have won the deal if we resign him for the coming years and he pitches anywhere near his career average 4.00 ERA. To those who say Jarrod will not do as well without his catcher, or without King Felix in front of him, this is not a big deal, seeing as Laird is one of the best defensive catchers in the league, and Justin Verlander or Edwin Jackson will be pitching in front of him. He should be able to work well with that situation. One other point; I know he is a fly-ball pitcher, and this is good for us, seeing as the CoPa is very spacious and also, we have one of the best defenses in the AL. If someone hits something far off Jarrod, Grandy will probably corral it no problem.
In conclusion, I feel this is a win-win situation for both teams. I see no downside to this trade whatsoever. Congrats M’s fans, but I am happy I am a Tiger at this moment.

It certainly looks like it
I’m hoping it’s largeness attracts any Mariners fans who are checking this blog out.
Ask and ye shall receive.
I love this deal for the Mariners, because if you look at the whole of Jarrod Washburn’s M’s tenure there was no guarentee that we’d ever get anything of value for him let alone a guy who fits our stadium well (French) and a minor leaguer with some upside (Robles). There was absolutely no reason to keep him. We had to trade him, and that we got value in the process can only be construed as a win.
As for your side of the deal…there is no doubt that Washburn is pitching better than he has…ever, but how much of that is attributable to park factors + stellar outfield defense + luck and how much is attributable to a genuine increase in skill (aka “the flipper”) + intestinal fortitude?
In the end, I guess a slight regression from the current so-called “shiny” numbers but Washburn, in a mental groove and determined, ends up being what you hoped for and does his part in helping carry you to the play-offs. Mere speculation but the best I can do.
Good luck.
but a good analysis
I basically just said “why are the Tigers stupid for getting a decent veteran starting left-handed pitcher when what they needed was a decent veteran starting left-handed pitcher?”
Good ERA is a bonus, but the low walkage is better. :)
"Be kind, for everyone you meet is fighting a great battle." -- Philo of Alexandria
They're overrating Robles
He may be top-5 in the Tigers system, but we dealt from a position of depth. He’s a reliever in the end, something that the M’s have plenty of. A solid prospect, potential setup guy, but we’ve lost worse.

Caron "Spa"
It’s a bamboo blend and the color is “Ocean” — kind of a light teal. Now I just have to find a pattern I like.
I have a skein of the Spa - in the same color, too!
There is a scarf pattern I have that uses sport weight, and the first yarn I used I didn’t like the way the pattern stitch draped. I thought the Spa might be better but I’ve been too busy trying to figure out a pumpkin basket for my little niece for Halloween to try the stitch yet. Too many projects and stupid work and chores keep getting in the way.
"Be kind, for everyone you meet is fighting a great battle." -- Philo of Alexandria

I have a shawl, a bag and a shell all going now. Why I’m starting a new project I couldn’t tell you. Except it’s fun to go back and forth among projects so you don’t get bored.
not to mention
Buying more yarn on the off chance that I’ll find something to do with it eventually – besides, it was on clearance and a great price! (My mom says that I am truly her dad’s granddaughter. I’ve been called worse.) :)
Although I did go through my stash and pull out three full paper grocery bags of novelty yarns that I can’t see myself actually doing anything with anytime soon, and I’m going to call around and see if I can find somewhere to take them off my hands. I’m keeping all the standard worsted weight, the Fun Fur, and the ribbon and ladder yarns that I picked up because those I have at least some vague ideas for. Also keeping all the cotton, because my sister and parents like the dishcloths I make out of that.

Washburn's defense and pitching at Safeco helped him out.
Comerica is a pitcher’s park and he should get some help from the Tigers’ defense but having had the displeasure of seeing most of Washburn’s tenure in Seattle I think Detroit made a terrible deal.
If he turns out to be another Doyle Alexander I'll be fine with this trade.
But Washburn’s numbers are shiny and glittery but perhaps not real.

The only problem is that Washburn has a better breaking pitch this year.
The numbers he’s putting up seem to be more because of his defense and ballpark. Comerica and the Tigers defense are comparable to Safeco and the Mariners – except RF where Ichiro runs and CF where Granderson has graded out to league average.

Welcome to Detroit>>Where the weak are killed and eaten.
I wish they would have traded sizemore
I know they never would have, but that would have really been a kick in the crotch to Cleveland. (which i always feel is deserved)
We did better than last year
and gave up next-to-nothing for it
Why be upset? A few days ago everyone was shitting all over Lucas French. Now all of a sudden we can’t bear his loss. And a Single-A player who will probably be a reliever? Aren’t we supposed to have a plethora of them? Well, you have to give up something in order to get something.
I’ll give the deal a B+
I’ll give getting no hitters a C….primarily because I expected NO trades AT ALL today. Plus we still have the waiver trade period. Lots of time to make deals guys….
Oh, and Josh Anderson for ANYTHING I give an A.
I liked Luke French.
Cheap and back of the rotation; considering the contract problems for Detroit there was stuff to like about French. What’s done is done though and I will put away my Washburn voodoo doll.
I’d say we’re in C+ to B+ (depending on how things work out).
They're gonna be talking a lot about us here:

Main guy thinks it’s the best trade of the day. I agree.
Yeah I heard that too
Pfft.
And twice more!

I used to say Porchello
but now it seems so odd to hear. Especially when everyone at that table is calling him that.
When it's spelled like that...
It looks like a household cleaning product

Well
if he’s talking at a national level, uhhm it would be fitting if he could at least pronounce the names
Welcome to Detroit>>Where the weak are killed and eaten.

there may be trades that were completed
that may not even be reported until later tonight…you never know
that is true
and I am hoping for something like that. Usually a GM will come out and make a statement if they are done for the day … correct?
Alright guys
I’m off. I’m leaving for the weekend and I’ll be at the game on Monday (yay!) so I will be back around these parts on Tuesday. Here’s hoping we take our brooms to Cleveland.

Welcome to Detroit>>Where the weak are killed and eaten.
I'm going to start using the term Peavey to describe hope dashing rejection.
This lady seemed to be interested but just as I went to pick her up to go out to a show she Peavey’d.
Not good, if true

I said that things were too quiet around the White Sox camp...
…but isn’t Peavy still on the DL?

mlbtraderumors.com reporting Jake Peavy to White Sox, again.

you are great for keeping my hope alive
you are just as good at “Peavying” my expectations.
(was that used correctly?)
haha.
I dunno, I mean he’s probably right, but I’m bored and have nothing better to do than speculate
Plus it be great to send a "Take your Jake Peavy and shove it" statement

Close enough in my book.
A guy I knew was accused of plagiarism and I began to use his last name as a term for copying. I Bowman’d the idea from television.
Hey, anytime the Tiger hitters are stymied by a pitcher they shouldn't be stymied by...
I call it the “Reyes Effect” because it always reminds me of Anthony Reyes in game 1 of the World Series.

that's a mean wish for someone going to work on a Friday evening

Just because
someone is doing something they rather not be doesnt mean they cannot have fun while doing it.
Do yourself a favor Leyland...
Put your best possible defenders behind Washburn and you might get the the value of the $3.5 million he’s due over the rest of the season. This trade is only in Detroit’s favor if they do work in October.
I can't decide why you guys are being such jerks about this
Seriously- Lookout Landing’s behavior was downright offensive. I’m surprised they didn’t accuse us of all being stupid. Well, explicitly, anyway.
Look, I’m a SABR type as well, and I see a pitcher with a 3.75 FIP moving to a slightly less spacious park with slightly worse OF defense. It won’t be the end of the world at all. Hell, pitchers on lucky streaks like this tend to see them hold up for whole seasons (see Galaraga, Armando).

Do you understand regression
and the instability in HR rates?
Because there’s the source of your nice FIP.
His xFIP is something like a 4.10 which is still decent.
Like I said earlier, this trade is a breakeven if you guys can make that playoff birth. Otherwise it was a bit of a waste.
but hopefully
that Hr-rate doesn’t regress this year.
Someone needs to make it to the playoffs that has a shot at stopping the Sox/Yanks/LAnahiem
"slightly worse OF defense."
The Mariners OF defense has been worth 35.9 runs above average this season. The Detroit OF defense has been worth 6.8 runs above average this season.
