Game 101: Tigers at Indians

Detroit Tigers at Cleveland Indians, Jul 31, 2009 7:05 PM EDT

  Edwin Jackson (7-5, 2.59) vs.   Fausto Carmona (2-6, 7.42), 7:05 p.m. EST

After salvaging a win Wednesday night in Texas, the Tigers' road trip continues with a weekend series against what's left of the Cleveland Indians.  (Okay, that might be a slight exaggeration.  The Tribe isn't quite the Pittsburgh Pirates.)

Fausto Carmona is back from the minor leagues after getting a Dontrelle Willis type of demotion.  He'll take over the departed Cliff Lee's spot in the Indians' starting rotation.  Progressing through each level of Cleveland's minor league system, Carmona compiled a 3-3 record and 2.72 ERA in seven starts.  Against the Tigers, Carmona has a 6-3 record and 3.49 ERA in 10 career starts.

For the Tigers, Edwin Jackson is winless in his past two starts, despite allowing five runs in 14 innings.  Run support continues to be a problem.  (We can only imagine what he was thinking during the Tigers' 13-run outburst on Wednesday night.)  He's been spectacular against the Tribe in two starts versus the Tribe this season, giving up only one run and nine hits in 14 innings, with 11 strikeouts and three walks.

Let's Go Tribe has your SB Nation opposing view for this three-game series.

I felt bad for Martinez after watching that interview.

Before today, he said he wanted to be an Indian for his entire career.

Tomorrow is Victor bobblehead night.

I had better still get my bobblehead to taunt my Tribe friends with.

by David Tokarz on Jul 31, 2009 7:32 PM EDT reply actions

Given all the trouble scoring runs of late...

You’d think Jackson would try and take better care of a 2 run lead. “No Squandering” should also apply to the pitching staff.

That was kind of tough to watch.

I actually like him a lot...especially now that he's no longer an Indian

and on Boston instead. I think everyone should have concluded by now that Boston is my favorite team that is not the Tigers.

Washburn and Peavy and Orlando Cabrera incoming, Victor Martinez heading out…

here’s to a great August for the Tigers, cuz with Peavy slated to come back at the end of the month, we might need a cushion…

That’s right, Jim. Just switch to another pitcher. I wonder what the new guy thinks after witnissing the Tigers up, close and personal. Can’t hit for shit, is probably what he thinks.

Brewers were trying to teach a masters level course on squandering

Bases loaded, none down, but then the next two guys get out, and the pitcher’s up next…

and the pitcher gets a hit…

THE PITCHER! Are you taking notes, Tigers????

(of course, Braden Looper apparently has 7 rbi this season, so we’re not talking regular pitcher hitting abilities here)

I came home, flipped on my television, and first thought the sound was broken until I saw that Guillen hit a two run homer.

My lucky shirt is now 5-0 as the Loons came back to win in the bottom of the 9th and I ran into my parents at the game so we could all point and laugh at the people who left after the 5th inning. :D

Cover your date’s ears or your own during their new American Pie-dol promotion (Traverse City Pie Company sponsor) – as far as I can tell the purpose is to find the two most tone-deaf people in the stadium and have them embarass themselves in front of the crowd.

Also, we have a rally camel now. Yesterday might have been it’s inaugural appearance, but as long as it works, it stays.

Galarraga is still in the dugout. He has not moved to the bullpen. Yet.

the Loons apparently have a rally camel now

I think they started it in they extra-inning game yesterday (it was 12 innings, but four hours 37 minutes long, so the announcers on the radio were getting punchy). They showed a camel on the scoreboard captioned “RALLY CAMEL” and going along with this odd mooing sound. :)

Bizarre, but they won 11-10 in the 12th yesterday and rallied to win tonight, so I guess it will stay at least until they start losing.

don't feel bad

They have won the last four games in a row – they are bound to lose sometime pretty soon (and with as sloppy as they were to start this one, I thought they had no chance to pull it out).

I hope your date is okay with a loss, though. I don’t want the two of you to have a disappointing time.

Truth be told...

On a night you score five runs and Edwin Jackson’s pitching for you, you need to win. You should not HAVE to score a sixth run.

And why did our lefty relievers suck tonight?
