Game 82: Royals at Tigers

Kansas City Royals at Detroit Tigers, Jul 6, 2009 7:05 PM EDT

  Gil Meche (4-8, 4.20) vs.   Armando Galarraga (5-7, 5.34), 7:05 p.m. EST

After a 3-9 road trip, the Detroit Tigers return to Comerica Park for a six-game homestand before the All-Star break.  (And they're back in the eastern time zone!  Hooray for night-time, post-game blogging at a reasonable hour!)  The Kansas City Royals come to town winners of two straight, having done the Tigers a favor by defeating the Chicago White Sox in those games.

Gil Meche starts for K.C., having lost his past three starts.  In his last outing, however, he held the Twins to two earned runs over six innings (despite tying a season-high with five walks).  The Tigers knocked Meche around at Kauffman Stadium on Memorial Day, chasing him from the game after just 2.1 innings.  But he's pitched well in Detroit.  At Comerica Park, Meche is 5-1 with a 3.34 ERA in 12 starts.

The bad news about Armando Galarraga's last start is that he walked six Oakland batters in 6.1 innings of work.  (Jim Leyland was not happy about that.)  But the good news is that Galarraga held the A's to one run while allowing only two hits.  He also struck out five batters for the second straight appearance, his highest totals in that category since April.  But Galarraga lived dangerously with those six walks (the most he's issued all season), and a better team likely would've punished him for those mistakes.  In three career starts against the Royals, he has a 2-0 record and 1.80 ERA.

Royals Review as your SB Nation opposing view for this three-game series.

Have you cast your All-Star vote(s) for Brandon Inge this evening?  He's currently second (a close second) behind Ian Kinsler - who got to play on ESPN last night - in Final Vote balloting.

UPDATE: Here are your starting lineups:

Brandon Inge is currently in 2ND PLACE in voting

PLEASE, if we all vote at least 100X tonight (not as time consuming as it sounds) that should be at least a couple thousand more votes.

It’s so close, only a few more days…DON’T GIVE UP!!

Evening, everyone!

I probably won’t be around (here) for the game (though I’ll be pulling very, very hard for a good performance from Galarraga), but I wanted to drop off my contribution to the Inge campaign:

Have fun tonight!

And with a chance to bury two division rivals. This should be a good week … it’ll be a great one if we can get Inge into the All Star game.

BINGE

I wonder if everyone has visions of Brandon striking out,for the last out of the world series.

by VegasTigers on Jul 6, 2009 6:59 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

I suspect most people outside Michigan and Missouri have forgotten the world series. Other than maybe some images of Tigers pitchers being unable to field the ball or throw it to a base properly.

by MackAveKurt on Jul 6, 2009 7:06 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Last Out...

i remember that. I also remember he had got on base as many times in the WS as Ordonez, Pudge, and Polanco combined.

That “made the last out” bit is silly. It’s all the other outs that cost them the series…

(And I still think that interference call was a bunch of…smudge).

I'm going to check on this.

But Inge probably has the most home games before the all-star break, which is a huge advantage. Home fans can stuff the ballot box. In fact, they should be required to vote at least once to get in.

by StringTheory on Jul 6, 2009 7:03 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

Okay.

Figgins and Pena have the same amount of home games. No ones comes to Rays games, and nationally, no one should think Figgins is better at third.

Armando was pitching so well, and you can’t be bothered to get him enough help that a home run to a guy named Willie ties it up. Maybe the Tigers got him mixed up with Jackson. :(

definitely not a cheapie

One of those where the outfielder makes more of a courtesy jog toward the wall than an actual attempt to catch it because he knows how far gone it is.

Stupid clutch Royals and non-clutch Tigers. This is the wages of squandering early opportunites, nothing good ever comes of it. :(

RBI double in the bottom of the 8th to tie the game was clutch, no?

by Mike Rogers on Jul 6, 2009 9:45 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Yes, but the Royals have been more clutchy.

Less clutchy and the baserunning blunder does make it less clutch, i suppose. Clutchy is a word I need to use more often, as well.

Greinke against French.
Or Soria against the bottom of our line-up.

kinda need to work on the run scoring end so the pitchers don’t have to be perfect every game in order for the team to win.
