Game 116 Afterglow Thread
Wow, baseball is so much more relaxing when the team you're rooting for scores a lot of runs. Gosh, why don't the Tigers do this more often? Games like last night's 1-0 margin are so much more stressful. They should totally look into trying to score more runs.
Tigers 10, Royals 3 is your final. Soak up the afterglow.

"Even Santiago homering in this game"
Aww, now that’s not nice.

he is known for many things
But he just doesn’t LOOK like a home run hitter.

Great Win
Another solid pitching performance and great hitting! It sure is nice to have KC in town after going 1-3 in Boston. Inge continues to struggle with his knee. Great walk off HR yesterday but how long can he be kept in the lineup hitting .180 with reduced range an effectiveness at 3B. Kudos for his efforts. But… wouldn’t Larish do a better job hitting with him and Raburn at 3rd while Inge tries to be healthy for late-Sept and hopefully October

nah
we like inge. he does well enough with enough spectacular plays that he still contributes.

+1
Inge is definitely a scrapper, that’s for sure.

inge owns the hot corner
I don’t like seeing him hurt, but he and skip wouldn’t have him in the games if it were a bad idea, I don’t think
Maybe rest him a bit more...
but don’t DL him or anything. His glove alone is to valuable to this team.
My Music: Some Sorta Giant
Inge's defense is still top notch and makes up for fewer runs now
I don’t see him going anywhere soon. Although I agree that this may hurt them in the Stretch
In football news, the Lions won!
Let us revel in this now since it is doubtful to happen very often as the season progresses.

Lions can win in preseason
…but then they use up their quota by the time the actual games start.

i missed it
watched most of the game, then switched to the tigers with the lions down 9 with five left to go…

I do wonder about Thomas batting 3rd
wouldn’t it make more sense to put him at lead off and put Granderson at 3rd? Clete is fast and I think Curtis would give more opportunities with Cabrera right behind him.
Does FSN use flash cards for the Leyland interviews?
“How big was X?”
“How concerned are you about X?”
Every time!
I was thinking something very similar
they just have these canned questions every night. no wonder Jimmy looks surly so often.
This is why it bugs me when msm claims that athletes are boring in interviews. Maybe they are boring because you guys ask crappy questions!

But they went to journalism school for four years.
That means they’re automatically superior to bloggers.

Anyone who went to college
Will tell you that there were many classmates who were just as clueless after four years as they were when they started out. College isn’t a magic place where knowledge just gloms onto people as they wander around the academic buildings – you have to work to acquire it.
No work = no REAL education. Anyone with a degree has to show that they actually got something out of it other than a piece of paper that says they successfully passed tests and completed paperwork required in the four years they were there.
(And I have a college degree and am very proud of it – but don’t think that it confers any additional authority by saying “I have a degree!” It matters because I worked hard for it and actually learned something at college, not that I was just THERE.)

OK let me weight in on this
This is what I did for a living in the past life after all.
“Talk about” is a lazy way to do an interview, and typically used when leading in the direction of a storyline you’ve got in your head. For that reason, it’s a favorite of TV guys who want that 15 second quote without much work. You’ve got the highlight, you need the reaction that fits in seemlessly, lead them into it and there you go. TV folks are doing stories, they’re just doing replays. And don’t get me wrong, I’ve got friends in TV and sometimes they do ask insightful stuff. Just seems like you never see it on postgame for pro sports.
Postgame is often a bad time for quotes, anyway, yet people expect to hear them. Athletes were living in the moment, coaches just don’t care to give good quotes quite often, and were of course living in the moment too. There’s not a lot of time to think back about it and put together a nice crisp quote, and they just want to get it over with and go on with their day anyway. The people asking the questions know that, too. So you’re gonna hear a lot of cliches and boring stuff out of both sides. The worst quotes will typically come from asking for them to talk about a specific moment. The best come form open-ended questions and finding a theme.
The theme is what gives the newspaper guys the ability to build a better story. You come at it from a different angle and it works better. Like say it’s the improved fielding. You don’t go “talk about brandon inge’s big play in the third inning” if that’s the game-turning play you want to hang your hat on. Ask what fundamentals make inge a good fielder, etc. Of course over the course of 162 games, you’re gonna be hard pressed to keep it fresh.
But anyway, yeah, I agree, I don’t really listen to postgame interviews on TV. I like the features that occur between games to really get the information from.
By the way, the only journalism class I ever took was the history of journalism, and i’ve got awards for my work from the state press association. It’s a craft, you don’t need to learn it in school, despite what they claim.

Drove right past Comerica just after Avila’s HR. He needs to just start every game :)
This winning + scoring lots if runs is totally awesome!

Little League World Series on ESPN
depresses me.

clarification
I think it’s great to see these kids, but I wonder if being on ESPN isn’t too much pressure for some of them.
But mostly it’s depressing to see how many 12 year old kids are taller than I am. My nephew is 4 and a half – I figure I’ve got another seven years, at most, to be taller than he is.

so the only inning the Tiegrs didn't score in
they had the bases loaded with one down.
I guess you can’t really call ’em on squandering when they put a number up in 7 out of 8 at bats.

Hello to anyone who is still around
Just got home from the game, and it was a blast. Actually, it was very much like the one game I went to last year: The Tigers scored 10 runs and hit four home runs. I have photos which I will try to post to an album somewhere tomorrow morning (I warn you, though I can do some good things with Photoshop, I’m a pretty lousy photographer). My other (random) observations:
-Jackson was hit pretty hard tonight, but made pitches when he needed to.
-Raburn, Inge, Polanco, and Granderson are the only four Tigers who have played in every Tigers game I’ve been to. The Tigers are 3-1 all-time in games I attend.
-The public address announcer says Alex Avila’s name in a really irritating fashion (“Alex A-VEEEEEEEEEEE-la”). Speaking of Avila, one of the things I was worried about with him was how he would fare against left-handed pitching. It’s a small sample size, but so far, so good.
-Guillen, for never having hit left-handed against left-handed pitching before, has actually been pretty good. So far, he’s been hit by a pitch and he has a walk, a single, and a groundout against lefties.
-The crowd gave Josh Anderson a fairly warm reception when he pinch-hit
-GREAT crowd tonight, by the way. If it wasn’t a sell out, it was pretty close, which is amazing considering they were playing the Royals.

Sneak preview on pics
(It’s not my best shot, by the way). I know the angle isn’t the best, but it makes me laugh because it looks like Cabrera is either dancing the YMCA or he’s about to do a cartwheel.
