Bonine Squeezed Out For Huff

Eddie Bonine's latest stint with the Tigers was a short one. Four days after being called up, he's going back down to Toledo to make room for Aubrey Huff.

To clear a spot on the Tigers' active 25-man roster for the newly acquired Aubrey Huff, Detroit sent pitcher Eddie Bonine back down to Triple- A Toledo.  The move was just announced in the Tigers' official press notes.

Bonine had just been called back up by the Tigers four days ago to take the place of Freddy Dolsi (who had taken Chris Lambert's spot) in the bullpen.  But with the team's dominant starting pitching over the past four games, along with the recovery of Armando Galarraga, using Bonine in a long relief role wasn't necessary.

This leaves the bullpen a man short, however, which leads you to think another move is soon to come.  But for now, Ryan Raburn, Clete Thomas, and maybe even Marcus Thames avoid getting squeezed off the roster for Huff.

Perhaps the Tigers are waiting until they know whether or not Carlos Guillen can play the outfield before deciding who goes (at least until rosters expand in September).

I'm kind of surprised

knowing JL’s penchant for a 7-man pen and he disdain for Clete striking out…I thought Clete would be gone.

didnt see that one coming...

Bet there is another pitcher added prior to the west coast trip. Perhaps clete and ryan are auditioning. Either way, they’ll both be here for callups.

I prefer it this way

Platoon Huff with Ordonez part of the time or use him to spell Huff, Clete and Marcus play LF in a platoon, Raburn spells Inge and plays RF/LF.

You think Huff plays RF rather than LF?

I know he did in the past, but still…I’d feel more comfortable with him in LF

I would think Magglio and Clete platoon at RF

Huff and Reburn platoon at LF

Jim has confidence in the next 3 pitcher's

outings… Bonine will be back, him or someone by the end of next week.

lefties galore for king felix...

Huff as dh, carlos in left, clete in right, and the chosen one behind the plate. Cue the circus music for carlos in left.

OF is less important...

Porcello’s a GB pitcher. Plus with Thomas in LF and Grandy in CF, the OF can shift over a few steps to help Guillen.

not counting the red sox game

he allowed 39 fly balls in the previous four games. Groundball pitcher or no, the ball goes in the air.

This is true

But I’d be more worried if it was Wash on the mound or Clete/Granderson weren’t playing RF/CF.

Carlos will be fine...

He’ll play on the warning track and left the ball drop

Huh....

…am I the only one who thought “Sent Bonine back down? Was he still with the team?!”

And I have to agree with the majority – Guillen is to OF as Zumaya is to …… not being on the DL? Oh well; I hope he surprises us all and kills it out there!

Our bench is

Laird, Maggs, Thames, Santiago, and Raburn….not too bad of a bench

by Tagne13 on Aug 18, 2009 4:56 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

I agree.

I just want to see Huff push some guys across the plate. Then I will be happy.

by murrajo on Aug 18, 2009 5:39 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

If he does that

I think we all will be.

by Tagne13 on Aug 18, 2009 5:43 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

I like the bench too.

I never agreed with so many guys in the bullpen. We have Seay/Lyon for 7/8 and Rodney for the ninth. If they are needed. We have Perry and Minor for long releif if needed or xtra innings. Who else do we need? Smoltz???

The Rangers traded for a catcher?

Something is wrong with that organization. They had, like 50* major league catchers last year.

Aubrey Huff

Compare the mug shots of Huff and Sean Casey….it looks like Casey is reviving his career under another name…..
