Game 120 Overflow Thread
Jarrod Washburn put the Tigers in quite a hole this afternoon. Did he feel a little too much sympathy toward his former mates in Seattle? Here guys, go on and hit it. He even did his best to make Russell Branyan forget his 0-for-4, four-strikeout performance by serving up a bazooka shot that could've landed somewhere near the Gem Theatre.
Even the sky had to cry about it, delaying the game by an hour.
But... He Who Has Come to Save Us, Alex Avila, just smacked a two-run single to cut the Mariners' lead to 6-5. We might have a ballgame here, after all.
We're going to the seventh inning!

oh, we have a ballgame
just a question of whether it becomes one we’re glad to have kept an eye on all afternoon or not…

It's amazing to me that any pitcher struggles in CoPa
It’s always considered to be among the more pitcher friendly ball parks.

I'm afraid to watch
Every time I do, it seems like the Mariners are scoring and the Tigers are flying out. :(

haha. I was having some issues with it.
So I decided to lop it off.

I'd like to do that with one of my coworkers
Everyone else has “issues” with him and would love to see him lopped off.

But as I said
That makes no sense. Why would he suddenly start giving up home runs?
http://tigersamateuranalysis.blogspot.com
by SabreRoseTiger on Aug 20, 2009 3:59 PM EDT up reply actions
But that wasn't an issue in Seattle
And Comerica’s as much of a pitcher’s park as Safeco
http://tigersamateuranalysis.blogspot.com
by SabreRoseTiger on Aug 20, 2009 4:01 PM EDT up reply actions
Just because it wasn't happening doesn't mean it wasn't an issue.
Plus the M’s defense in the outfield is much better and turned hits into outs helping Washburn out immensely.
Basically he dodged bullets but eventually his true form was going to come out.
The greatest outfield defense in the world isn't gonna help if you're giving up the fly balls he's been giving up in Detroit
http://tigersamateuranalysis.blogspot.com
by SabreRoseTiger on Aug 20, 2009 4:04 PM EDT up reply actions
You missed the point.
He was still getting hit hard but Safeco + defense made him look much better. He still gave up plenty of fly balls but somehow many of them didn’t go out.
He’s the same pitcher and he’s showing it (which is why I thought the trade was dumb). Washburn gives up plenty of fly balls and they’re starting to get out of the park. The question was never: why but rather when.
Because he had been lucky.
This had been pointed out in numerous places when the trade happened.
Lookout landing has a significant portion of their game thread to mocking the BYB thread since that’s exactly what they were saying over there.
Also, Comerica really isn’t a pitcher’s park anymore. It’s neutral at best.
I think Raburn’s sticking around. Going out on a limb here.

Iffy?
No, this is Jarrod Washburn. His shiny numbers were a mirage. Thankfully the Tigers overcame their own front office stumbles to win.
Perhaps there's some progress, though
Of the four home runs, only the Branyan home run was a BOMB. The rest were well-hit, but they seemed to be aided somewhat by the wind.
