Game 120 Overflow Thread

Jarrod Washburn put the Tigers in quite a hole this afternoon.  Did he feel a little too much sympathy toward his former mates in Seattle?  Here guys, go on and hit it.  He even did his best to make Russell Branyan forget his 0-for-4, four-strikeout performance by serving up a bazooka shot that could've landed somewhere near the Gem Theatre.

Even the sky had to cry about it, delaying the game by an hour.

But... He Who Has Come to Save Us, Alex Avila, just smacked a two-run single to cut the Mariners' lead to 6-5.  We might have a ballgame here, after all.

We're going to the seventh inning!

just a question of whether it becomes one we’re glad to have kept an eye on all afternoon or not…

a 6.58 ERA at the CoPa. Jason Grilli, anyone?

It's amazing to me that any pitcher struggles in CoPa

It’s always considered to be among the more pitcher friendly ball parks.

I'm afraid to watch

Every time I do, it seems like the Mariners are scoring and the Tigers are flying out. :(

Jerrod Washburn

We definitely traded for the pre-2009 model.

by 13194013 on Aug 20, 2009 3:58 PM EDT reply actions

But as I said

That makes no sense. Why would he suddenly start giving up home runs?

http://tigersamateuranalysis.blogspot.com

by SabreRoseTiger on Aug 20, 2009 3:59 PM EDT up reply actions

He's a fly ball pitcher.

Without heat so he’ll give up long flies.

by 13194013 on Aug 20, 2009 4:00 PM EDT up reply actions

But that wasn't an issue in Seattle

And Comerica’s as much of a pitcher’s park as Safeco

http://tigersamateuranalysis.blogspot.com

by SabreRoseTiger on Aug 20, 2009 4:01 PM EDT up reply actions

Just because it wasn't happening doesn't mean it wasn't an issue.

Plus the M’s defense in the outfield is much better and turned hits into outs helping Washburn out immensely.

Basically he dodged bullets but eventually his true form was going to come out.

by 13194013 on Aug 20, 2009 4:03 PM EDT up reply actions

You missed the point.

He was still getting hit hard but Safeco + defense made him look much better. He still gave up plenty of fly balls but somehow many of them didn’t go out.

He’s the same pitcher and he’s showing it (which is why I thought the trade was dumb). Washburn gives up plenty of fly balls and they’re starting to get out of the park. The question was never: why but rather when.

by 13194013 on Aug 20, 2009 4:06 PM EDT up reply actions

Because he had been lucky.

This had been pointed out in numerous places when the trade happened.

Lookout landing has a significant portion of their game thread to mocking the BYB thread since that’s exactly what they were saying over there.

Also, Comerica really isn’t a pitcher’s park anymore. It’s neutral at best.

by Ian Casselberry on Aug 20, 2009 3:59 PM EDT reply actions

He wont be sent down for the west coast trip after a 3 hit game.

by sal. on Aug 20, 2009 4:00 PM EDT up reply actions

Perhaps there's some progress, though

Of the four home runs, only the Branyan home run was a BOMB. The rest were well-hit, but they seemed to be aided somewhat by the wind.

Doubtful

Washburn is a back end starter. He’s not going to be a strong option and even weak home runs are home runs.

I’m hoping he can keep things to 4-5 runs and the Tigers keep scoring for him.
