Game 122 Thread of Shame
Once again, runs are hard to come by for the Tigers. But they may have been lucky to be in this game until the bottom of the ninth, as Armando Galarraga somehow gave up only two runs, despite seven hits and two walks.
That doesn't diminish the fact that the Tigers struggled to score against Trevor Cahill, a pitcher they mashed for seven runs back in May. Detroit also managed just one hit in two innings against Oakland's bullpen, but that's been a strength for the A's all season long.
This one hurts a bit, as both the White Sox and Twins won earlier today. So scratch a game off that lead.
Full recap tomorrow. Both teams back it at 4:05 p.m. EST tomorrow afternoon.

Hello, boys and girls
My local Tigers’ radio affiliate decided to ditch in the middle of the radio postgame show and go to some ESPN programming, and I am not happy about that (Of course I watched the TV postgame, but as a blogger, I feel it important to get analysis from multiple angles). I do wonder about that last play, and I think there were two things that cost them on that: Raburn trying to dive for the ball, and Avila letting the ball get past him. Then again, giving up base hits to lose a game instead of walking people is something new and different for Zach Miner.
On the other hand, this game is a brilliant example of why Armando Galarraga does not have more wins. I can think of at least seven games (including this one) where he gave up three earned runs or fewer and got saddled with a loss or a no-decision either because there was no run support or because the bullpen blew a lead late.
Interestingly enough, this game really didn’t have much of the strangeness we’ve come to expect from west coast games. But I’m sure they’ll make up for it in Anaheim, where weirdness is in abundance.

Here's some good news...
Grilli blew the game for the Rangers… Gave up the winning run in the bottom of the 10th.
That's not good news
It puts us closer to having both Boston and NY in the playoffs.

It's good news if you don't much care for Grilli

what's with the grilli hate?
People really ought to let it go by now.

Kinda agree
I certainly don’t like the guy, but as long as he’s not winning games against Detroit, helping a team in the Central or helping Boston/NY, I could care less.

I am very annoyed with Clete's
Performance this month. I realize that he has come through on some key plays and I am sure I am going to catch all kinds of hell for my comments, but that’s ok.
In the month of August Clete is batting ( well under the Mendoza) .188. OUCH.
I feel that because he has done well hitting key homeruns when we really needed them that he thinks he must do this every at bat. He continually tries to swing for the seats, when sometimes we only need the ball put into play. I for one, am getting tired of watching him swing out of his shoes when he steps to the plate.
Ball in motion is more important, especially at this time of year.
Raburn, whom most everyone wants put on the bus, is batting for the month of August .368 WOW
almost double (with lack of a few points) than that of Clete. Raburn has also definitely come through with the some key plays this month
It appears Clete could use some work at the plate and a little more focus on what to do when we have RISP.

I agree
Although he’s been less than average in defense, Raburn has been good at the plate. Every swing of Cletes, looks like he’s going for a homerun. I thought he went to Toledo to work on his swing? I have also been less impressed with Huff. He’s supposed to be a veteran bat. Even tho Raburn, should not have dove at that ball, I think he played it well. Short hopped it and threw it in well. I haven’t heard anyone say, “maybe Laird would have made that play at the plate?”
