Game 123 Thread of Shame
Is a loss even worse when the team you're rooting teases with a comeback, only to fall apart at the end? The Tigers cut a four-run lead to one, thanks to a two-run shot from Miguel Cabrera. But Fu-Te Ni and Ryan Perry could not hold the line, giving up two runs apiece in the late innings.
The Tigers take a bad loss - and a series loss - against an Oakland team they should beat. Now they face three games against the Angels, who could very well sweep them in Anaheim. Suddenly, the prospects for this road trip don't look so rosey.

The ESPN Sunday Night Baseball-gasm is about to start
Yankees, Red Sox, or meteor impact?
(I vote meteor.)

Now, now...
I hate the Red Sox, but we need them to beat the White Sox the next four days.

Maybe the first meteor could obliterate the airport as the White Sox team plane is landing?

at least AJ could - and Ozzie
Guillen probably eats hot flaming coals as a snack instead of walking across a bed of coals like normal people.

Unless we take two of three from the Angels...
And I seriously doubt we will, this is yet another lost road trip.
Guess the only good thing is that we have JV, Wash (egads), and EJ going against the hottest team not named the Yankees.

The worst part about it is that the majority of it happened on national TV
It was one of those FSD-Big Fox-ESPN weekends.

The good thing about this weekend
White Sox completely blew their chance to get close before their hellish road trip, although I’m not so sure we shouldn’t be more worried about the Twins now.

You think this term will catch on?
From MLive’s article about today’s game:
Tomko joined the Carl Pavano Society, which is comprised of pitchers who seem to save their rare dominating performances for the Tigers.
Truth be told, I already had a name for this phenomenon: The Reyes Effect (named for Anthony Reyes and his dominating performance over the Tigers in the ‘06 World Series). However, I coined that phrase back in ’07, and it hasn’t caught on here (not surprisingly, as every time I try to utilize the term here, I end up having to explain it).

I'll never, ever get over it.
I had tickets to Game 6.
Every time something bad happens to the Tigers, I look at my wife and say the following words:
“We should have won in 06. We were the best team.”

However, only 2 teams made it that far
and the Tigers were one of them. I was very proud of that, even tho they lost. Just saying, “we’re going to the world series” is something only 2 teams every year gets to say

My memories of the 2006 postseason are kinda weird
Between school and work, I didn’t get to watch the ALDS at all, and the only game of the ALCS that I saw was Game 1 and part of Game 4. I happened to be visiting my college homecoming that weekend at Denison University (about 30 miles east of Columbus), but it just so happened that the guy who lived next to the friend I was staying with had been to the game and was the one who filled me in on the good news.
I did see a good chunk of the World Series, for what it’s worth, but like I said, I only remember bits and pieces (I didn’t watch as many games back then, which I’m still kicking myself for, so I was still trying to learn who everyone was. It seemed like any time I had watched a game, the starting pitcher was either Kenny Rogers or Nate Robertson). Oddly enough Game 1 of the World Series was the first time I ever saw Verlander pitch. I remember an errant pickoff throw, a home run to Albert Pujols, and a wild pitch (I think), but I don’t remember anything else from his performance in either Game 1 or Game 5 (though I do recall Tim McCarver having absolutely nothing good to say about JV or Joel Zumaya). I mostly just remember Anthony Reyes mowing ‘em down (and getting really tired of McCarver’s subsequent mancrush on Reyes). And the other games in the Series are the same. I remember Zumaya making a throw to third that sailed over Inge’s head, but I don’t remember why he did that. I do remember that at some point during the World Series, both Yadier Molina and Pudge took foul tips where no man wants to be foul-tipped. And of course, I remember Sean Casey being the Tigers’ entire offense.

I was debating most of the time
So I was bugging people with internet for the scores. I still remember what I did after Bondo’s performance in the LDS though. And I did get to see the Maggs shot in the LCS… I told my father there was no way that Ordonez would hit one out since he already had a HR in the game… never lived it down.

I, too missed much of it
I saw Game 1 of the ALDS on tv. I saw Game 2 of the ALDS on tv. And that was about it. Had to work for game 3 and 4, but at least was able to catch glimpses on tv.
I think I saw the afternoon ALCS game and that was it. Again, had to work. While everyone was riveted during Game 4, I was busy at work.
Missed the opener of the world series. Heart breaker if ever I knew of one. Caught a few innings here or there but because they were all evening games and my job was kinda centered on working, that was it.
I almost feel as if the playoffs didn’t really happen.

Thanks to my MLB.tv subscription
I have since been able to watch the ALDS and ALCS games that I missed. Those two series kinda played out like a movie, especially the ALDS. I’ve also dipped into the archives and watched a few games from the ‘06 regular season as well, although it’s been quite a while since I’ve done that.

Far and away, the most heartbreaking sports moment of my life.
Watch hockey. Your roster of heartbreaks will increase rapidly. :(
Once they got to the Series, I wanted the Tigers very badly to win it and they were the better team – the long layoff made them nervous, I think. But before that point, getting to the playoffs at all was amazing, and after beating the Yankees I figured anything else would be gravy. In the end, it was crushing for them not to finish off the run – but I can’t help but be very happy with how they did perform.
The better team over the course of an entire season doesn’t always win a series – sometimes it’s about who is hot at the right time, or who is healthier in key areas, and if you get lucky you can win when you don’t “deserve it” based on the records.
And Tim McCarver is a rambling old man. He and Joe Morgan are part of my Triumvirate of Evil Baseball Broadcasters (the third member varies based on who has been the last ear-bleedingly crappy voice I heard call a game).

tell me about it
you say that, and my mind jumps to 1993, Wings against the Leafs…and Borchevsky in OT, and the next year, Osgood throwing it up the boards and Jamie Baker picking it off…absolutely searing moments.
Basketball is also bad for ultimate heartbreak moments, Chris Webber’s timeout comes to mind. But my #1 worst ever heartbreak moment was game 5 of teh 2005 NBA Championship series, when Rasheed Wallace went after Manu Ginobilli, and left Robert Horry wide open. Had I been home, had I been in front of my own TV at the time, my foot would have been through it…

I watched the Borchevsky goal from my high school prom
That should tell you how the prom went. Heartbreak on many levels that night.
Also, we lost to the Sharks the following spring when I was in my freshman year at MSU during an absolute monsoon. I ran outside and had a Shawshank moment, though less joyful for sure.

Hockey heartbreak?
I’m a Canes fan. There’s like 4 strikes right there.
1. Deadwings beat us 4-1 in 2002 Stanley Cup- I still hold a grudge.
2. Year after we win the cup, we come 1 point short of a playoff berth- we literally had to win like 2 of 5 in a stretch and couldn’t do it.
3. Penguins killed our miracle season last year- Sidney Crosby is a pansy.
4. I’m a hockey fan in the south. Do you have any idea how hard that is?

4. I know. It’s hard enough to just be a hockey fan in the US, I can’t even imagine it in the south.
3. Ab. So. Frigging. Lutely. “Face of the NHL,” my ass. (I wish he would punch a cabbie just to see the powers that be fall over themselves about how a “good Canadian boy” would never do anything like that unless provoked. Damn PR robot.)
2. Sad, but not unheard of. Anaheim did the same thing – it’s just so difficult. I’m hoping that the same hangover smacks Pittsburgh upside the head this season.
1. I felt bad for Carolina, actually – not because they lost the series (sorry – and drop the grudge, at least you have the Cup win later, which is more than a lot of teams have), but because no one was talking about them. There was Detroit and Colorado and Toronto – and that was as far as the talk went.
Carolina should really drop the all-black thirds, though. Goth is so passe now. :)

I do watch the Wings...
and at least they’ve won four Cups that I felt connected to. The Tigers won when I was 9.
Different kind of heartbreak against the Pens this spring-because they left one on the table that they’ll never be able to get back.

But 9 is prime time, in a way
We’re apparently the same age, based on your 1993 prom and being 9 in 1984…
For me, that age 8, age 9 was when I first really got into sprts big time, that first blush of sports awareness/love. Even though the Lions had made the playoffs the previous two years, the Tigers were the first team to really capture my imagination. My family went to India that year, for over a month, so I missed out on the last month of the season and the ALCS, and game 1 of the World Series, but I still remember coming back in time for Game 2, and forcing myself to stay awake and watching Dan Petry pitching, and giving up the home run to Kurt Bevacqua in the 5th inning.
And then winning the next three games to take the title…I definitely feel connected to the 84 team, even if I was just a kid at the time.

I was 14 that year
And late-single-digits to early-teens is probably the best time. You can enjoy the winning and the joy of the game, but you haven’t yet become interested in salary caps and luxury taxes and salary dumps and contract negotiations and holdouts and teams being sold and extortion for a new arena from the city … you pay more attention to the players and what they do on the field instead of what happens off of it.

I wasn't alive for the Tigers '84 World Series.
But I was born 9 months later in July, brought that tidbit up to my parents a couple years ago, they didn’t completely deny the coincidence.

I was pretty smashed about them losing.
It was frustrating since all of their pitchers were on their game, we made Jeff Weaver a champion and E1 became the theme for our pitchers.
Born in ‘85, I can’t wait til I finally see it. It hurt in ‘06 and really hope they can learn how to win on the road between now and the last few weeks. I get to see them in Tampa on my honeymoon so hopefully they’ll have their act together by then.

the white soxs aren’t great either and have an even tougher schedule coming up. Although Minnesota looks to be a factor again with a nice scheudle coming up. We got all our games against the Rays too … not looking foward to that.
