Wilkin Ramirez Recalled; Casey Fien Demoted
Per the Detroit Tigers Game Notes, outfielder Wilkin Ramirez has been recalled from Triple-A Toledo. To clear a spot for him on the roster, reliever Casey Fien was sent back to the Mud Hens.
There were rumblings this afternoon (via Twitter and elsewhere) that the Tigers were getting ready to make a move. Looks like we have it. Although you have to wonder if this is the only one that happens, with the bullpen now a man short.
Ramirez was hitting .274/.351/.455 with 13 homers and 40 RBIs in 347 at-bats with Toledo. In a cup-of-coffee appearance with the Tigers earlier this year, he went 1-for-3 with a home run.
Fien, meanwhile, was something of a disappointment (especially to those of us that were excited to see him pitch) in his four games with the Tigers. He allowed four earned runs and six hits in four innings, with six strikeouts and three walks.
UPDATE: MLive.com's Steve Kornacki reports that Ramirez will bat leadoff tonight and play left field.

I wonder if he'll lead off tonight against the lefty.
Maybe he’s seen Matusz before and has some success, which would further explain the call-up.

I like the move.
Let’s see what this kid has got. Can’t do any worse than Maggs right? (poor Maggs)

Then there is the question of Maggs
I feel like the Brass will do something with him, very soon. Of course as a Maggs fanatic, it has been weighing heavily on my conscience. I couldn’t blame them for releasing him considering where he is this year, but I also feel if he was batting .325 ^, no one would say anything and pay him the 18m. Of course as his #1, I find that hypocritical.
Personally I look for the brass to do 1 of 3 things:
1) sit down and renegotiate for a lower $ amount on the contract ( if allowed by Mr. Borass – just fire him)
2) Release him
3) let him get these last upcoming plate appearances and let the contract vest (highly unlikely)
That’s my take on it. It’s inevitable that something’s coming, it would just be nice to when and how….

Curious
what would be hypocritical about the Maggs situation if he hit .325^? ((Not trying to start a argument, but more interested in the point you are making). I think Maggs got a lot of credit and praise when he was hitting well. Now that he’s not, he is taking the heat for not living up to his contract. I kept hoping he’d turn a corner… but it didn’t happen. Hoping option #1 is a realistic option.

because
when they signed him as a free agent, I don’t think BA was a factor, I am sure it was more of something that was unsaid. I know he was signed, I am pretty sure to “drive em in”. that’s all. But anything I say re: Maggs is most definitely biased. I was also just curious to know what other people’s take on the situation might be.
Inge is a good example of driving runs in without an over the top BA.

geez, short leash
that’s at least a couple times this year we’ve had kids coming up to the big leagues, having one bad outing, and getting sent down very soon after…thinking about Figaro, rough second time out, and Hello Toledo! (though he landed on the DL very soon after). And now Fien, and the curse of the 13th inning.
Not really questioning the move, just pointing out something that struck my eye…kinda odd, given the Tigers recent history of bonus baseball and the close call last night. As with Ian, I’m wondering what other announcement might follow…

Would both players have to clear waivers?

Oh! Washburn is starting tonight.
Along with being a righty leading off, we really need speed in the outfield tonight. Duh.

struggling here with something
How do you give a nickname to a guy whose name already sounds like a nickname??
I mean, really, “Wilkin”? Can’t call him dubya cuz that might start a fight, the second thing to come to mind only works situationally, (“Walkin’ Wilkin milkin’ the count for a base on balls”). Is there any chance his middle name starts with an “a” so we can call him WARrior or something? You know someone’s gonna try out “Wilk Dogg”, so I thought I’d just get that travesty out of the way. Really, folks, I’m at a loss. Fortunately, I have you guys to back me up…have at it!

Ramirez
Basic scouting report-
Plus power, decent speed, good contact rates, average at best defender, bad plate discipline. If that discipline continues to be a problem, he’s a 4th OF. If he improves his discipline even slightly, he’s a solid and cheap player.

BTW
I’m thinking about doing a Top 10 list for prospects this week when I get the time. If there’s anything in particular any of you would like to see on that, I’d appreciate it if you’d let me know.

Are they that scared of a lefty pitcher?
I mean, Matusz’s numbers are good, but come on now.
This seems like a bit of an overreaction.

Raburn's line against LHP:
.219/.337/.425. I’m not sure that really makes up for Granderson’s lost defense.

Why can't Wilkin play center and I thought Marcus did a good job in left last night
P.S. I would much rather see Maggs DH. He may be worse in the outfield than Rayburn

I, too, am sad we have to retire the Fien-y call
at least for now.
