Tigers Win! Game 143 Afterglow Thread

After letting him down last week, the Detroit Tigers' lineup bailed Justin Verlander out of a bad loss Monday night.

More photos » Duane Burleson - AP

After letting him down last week, the Detroit Tigers' lineup bailed Justin Verlander out of a bad loss Monday night.

These are the kinds of wins that make phrases like "team of destiny" necessary.  Something special happens when the Detroit Tigers play at Comerica Park.

A game that was well on its way to a terrible loss for the home team, with a fifth-inning meltdown by Justin Verlander, turned into a joyous come-from-behind, walk-off win.

Was there a more glorious exhale than the one you let out when Aubrey Huff jacked that three-run homer out of the park?  And how does Alex Avila have such a knack for the big hit?

Full recap later on.  But for now, enjoy some of the brightest afterglow we've had this season.

sorry about the size, but I don't have the link to the smaller version

I think in an Afterglow thread

that’s about the right size.

I'd post a victory dessert...

…but that was taken care of for me with the paczkis. Chow down, boys!

paczki (s)

plural. It is a deep fried jelly or cream filled treat. They are sold mainly on Fat Tuesday ( the day before Lent). They are yummy and delicious and a coronary on a plate.

Ah.

Then I’ll stick with pan dulce.

A panczek (that's the singular)

is a Polish filled donut. You can eat them year round but traditionally they are a big thing on Fat Tuesday, because you have to use up all your fat and sugar before Lent. They are a heavy, yeasty donut – not like those nothing to them Dunkin Donuts or KrispyKremes.

by NCDee on Sep 14, 2009 10:57 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

lot like a jelly donut - from Wikipedia:

Typical pączki
A pączek is a deep-fried piece of dough shaped into a flattened sphere and filled with confiture or other sweet filling. Pączki are usually covered with powdered sugar, icing or bits of dried orange zest.

Although they look like bismarcks or jelly doughnuts, pączki (pronounced ponchki but mistakenly pronounced poonchki or punchki) are made from especially rich dough containing eggs, fats, sugar and sometimes milk. They feature a variety of fruit and creme fillings and can be glazed, or covered with granulated or powdered sugar. Prunes and rose-petal jam[citation needed] are traditional fillings, but many others are used as well, including lemon, strawberry, Bavarian cream, blueberry, custard, raspberry and apple.

Pączki have been known in Poland at least since the Middle Ages. Jędrzej Kitowicz has described that during the reign of August III, under the influence of French cooks who came to Poland, pączki dough was improved, so that pączki became lighter, spongier, and more resilient.

So

my friend came to my room in a time of need (she and her bf just broke up…this is the same person who had this happen before, they got back together and now they broke up again for real this time) but I left the TV on and muted it. I felt a little mean but at least I got to see all the action unfold. So it’s a bit delayed but WOO I LOVE THESE GUYS!

silly

You never get back together if you break up for good reasons. It’s like going back to the asylum after you staged a successful breakout!

GOOD REASONS

Sometimes people break up for silly reasons – they get nervous and get cold feet, or feel that someone else would be more exciting, or they think their current partner has a goofy laugh. Those aren’t important.

If two people don’t care about each other and respect each other, then they shouldn’t be together – and of course, if either is abusive emotionally or physically, that relationship should be very over.

I couldn’t bring myself to turn the TV all the way off, so I thought it would be nice to at least mute :)

I would have been pretty harsh, I think.

“What did you expect? He’s the same guy you broke up with the LAST TIME! Of COURSE he’s still a jerk!”

And I wouldn’t even have muted the television. :)

My two best friends (who are brother and sister) have the worst taste in the opposite sex...

The funny thing is, each one recognizes that in the other, but not in themselves. However, one of them just got married, so I hope it works out for her (I’ve never met the guy she married; it was kind of a sudden thing).

And how’s this for weird? My other best friend’s ex has a dog named Washburn.

why do people do this...

a girl I work with just asked my advice about this same issue. (her ex-boyfriend wants to get back with her after he left her for his ex) I told her to kick his sorry ass because it’s just a game that will continue on and on.

right decision

Don’t give him the opportunity to dump you again, because he will. Leopards don’t change their spots (at least, not without time and major life-changing experiences). Don’t let him come back to the safe choice once he dumped you for someone else and then didn’t find her quite what he expected.

by Baroque on Sep 14, 2009 10:46 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

In this case, he didn't dump her for someone else

in fact they were only broken up for about a day before they got back together. It’s mostly the guy being dumb and not knowing what he wants. I don’t think they should’ve gotten back together in the first place, but you know, these things happen.

by kendra.michelle on Sep 14, 2009 10:49 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

sounds a little immature

In that case, she should let him grow up a little bit. She’s not his babysitter and he shouldn’t yank her emotional chain around because he can’t make up his mind.

sometimes it's tough

To be both intelligent and competent.

And meetings are a scourge in all places. I worked in a lab where the physician who was the principle investigator would ask someone to page him after the first ten minutes of a meeting he knew would be useless, but he had to show up anyway. The man had an MD and a PhD and had research to do – but the suits expected him to show up at meetings anyway.

such as my manager asking me what we were out of...

plus having PLU’s memorized, figuring out how to calibrate the scales, fixing the scales when they break, and adjusting prices. Theres nothing there I can’t do right now and some of those women back there think I’m amazing. They should be glad that I enjoy responsibility and the challenges that come with it otherwise i could become suddenly lethargic.

one of my sisters is an engineer

Currently in a PhD program and hoping to defend in the next year. She STILL gets calls from her last employer sometimes because they can’t find where some of the drawings were archived or remember how the computer system did something, and they know that even after several years she will recall the information.

If they had paid her better and treated her less like a peon, she might have not left quite yet – but the fact they gave her no respect, promoted some less experienced and less qualified (but male) engineer over her for a position that all the vendors and clients she dealt with assumed she would get since she was the most qualified for it prompted her to leave and she has really enjoyed her research.

it's the leverage of the situation

bases loaded in the ninth is more important than bases loaded in the first, since there’s less time remaining in the game to make amends.

I agree mostly, but i’ll take the runs whenever they occur.
