Game 144: Royals at Tigers

Kansas City Royals at Detroit Tigers, Sep 15, 2009 7:05 PM EDT

  Robinson Tejeda (2-1, 3.21) vs.   Jarrod Washburn (9-8, 3.60), 7:05 p.m. EST

According to our buddy Sam Mellinger, the Royals are in the midst of "the most disappointing season in franchise history."  But part of that season was laying a three-game smackdown on the Tigers last week in Kansas City.  Can the Tigers get some payback this week in Detroit?

Robinson Tejeda was outstanding against the Tigers in his last start, giving up just three hits, striking out eight batters, and pitching six innings of shutout baseball (out-dueling Justin Verlander in the process).  That extended his scoreless streak to 19 innings.  Will that streak end tonight?  Tejeda has pitched in three games at Comerica Park, compiling a 2.16 ERA in 8.1 innings.

Jarrod Washburn is back in the Tigers' starting rotation after skipping his last turn to rest a sore left knee.  No word on whether or not the rest helped, but he's back out there tonight.  And in his last start, Washburn allowed three runs and seven hits over five innings to these very same Kansas City Royals.  With the Tigers, Washburn is winless at Comerica Park in five starts with a 7.26 ERA.

Placido Polanco gets the night off.  As a result, Ramon Santiago starts at second base, while Carlos Guillen bats in the lineup's #2 spot.  Also, Magglio Ordonez will reach the required number of plate appearances to trigger his 2010 contract option tonight.  So if you really don't want to see this happen, you'd better try to do something before Maggs's third plate appearance.

Jarrod Washburn goes for the epic

I’ve referred to Nate Robertson as The Exploding Gas Can for sometime now. With this start, Washburn can capture this title.

Everyone hope real hard that he doesn’t.

Lifetime numbers against respective starts. Remember Tejeda is a kid (that is, minor leaguer).

1. David DeJesus LF (9/28)
2. Willie Bloomquist RF (15/32 .469/.500/.594 shitshitshitshit)
3. Billy Butler 1B (3/14 THERE IS A GOD)
4. Miguel Olivo DH (3/13)
5. Alberto Callaspo 2B (donut/5)
6. Mitch Maier CF (1/4)
7. John Buck C (3/17, color me confused by this choice)
8. Alex Gordon 3B (2/18)
9. Yuniesky Betancourt SS (3/9)

1. Curtis Granderson CF (1/10)
2. Carlos Guillen LF (3/6 .500/.625/.833)
3. Magglio Ordonez RF (2/4)
4. Miguel Cabrera 1B (2/9 shitshitshit)
5. Aubrey Huff DH (donut/6)
6. Alex Avila C (never faced, prediction is 3 GS)
7. Brandon Inge 3B (donut/4 shitshitshit)
8. Ramon Santiago 2B (1/2)
9. Adam Everett SS (donut/5)

Summary: Washburn clearly hasn’t been himself lately, so I expect DeJesus and Bloomquist to be deadly up top. Tejeda had our number and a half last time we saw him but Guillen and Ordoñez both hit him well. Add in Catching Jesus and this should boil down to a good game.

So his loss I don’t mourn. However if you rest Washburn for two starts… he wouldn’t end up pitching again until the last game of the season vs. the Twins.

Luke was a serviceable 5th starter

Washburn has been, well, a gas can for us. He needs some rest man. The guy is a vet, he can handle sitting out for a while and coming back strong.

by explosivo2k2 on Sep 15, 2009 7:27 PM EDT up reply actions

well, mr french

had an ERA of 5.73 in August, and 12.27 for his one start in September. And the Mariners defense is better. So , it seems to me Washburn wasn’t a real downgrade.

by Kurt Mensching on Sep 15, 2009 7:28 PM EDT up reply actions

Defensive independent stats have them being equals thus far. Add in another arm from the minors going to the M’s way and we lose the deal. If two things are equal and one is paying a boatload for it while the other isn’t, one’s a winner and one is not.

We are not.

by Mike Rogers on Sep 15, 2009 7:30 PM EDT up reply actions

no matter how much you say I should be

I am not concerned over the loss of Luke French. If the Tigers were going to have to rely on French for the next few years, they’re in deeper shit than we know.

by Kurt Mensching on Sep 15, 2009 7:32 PM EDT up reply actions

It’s less about the loss of Luke French and more about the process in general. To me, it doesn’t show the fore-thought that I’d like to see from the front office. Then again, I’m not a general manager of a baseball team.

by Mike Rogers on Sep 15, 2009 7:33 PM EDT up reply actions

this time last year no one even knew the name Luke French

He came from no where, was suddenly a sell-high prospect and the trade didn’t work out for the Tigers. So be it. It goes both ways.

by Kurt Mensching on Sep 15, 2009 7:35 PM EDT up reply actions

Again, it’s less about Luke French and more about the process for me. I know I keep coming across as a Luke French fan boy — I’m not. He’s just a No. 5 starter and I even said before the trade happened when looking at the PITCHf/x data he’s a run of the mill LHP that fits into the back-end of a rotation.

However, Detroit failing to see significant regression from Washburn — regression that even without this bad HR luck in Detroit would’ve put him close to Luke French’s level — is my biggest beef. I long for the front office of a Boston Red Sox or Seattle Mariners (not because of the Washburn deal, but because of all the great moves they made in the off-season), so I’m getting kind of fed up with the Dave Dombrowski era.

by Mike Rogers on Sep 15, 2009 7:38 PM EDT up reply actions

There's no rule that says regression has to happen before the end of the season.

He very well could have ended up being an amazing rental.

Instead, we gave up almost nothing for well, nothing.

by rcpratt on Sep 15, 2009 7:40 PM EDT up reply actions

We gave up nothing for an infinitely more expensive nothing. No. 5 starters still have value and their value lies in their inexpensiveness.

And regression doesn’t always happen, but it does happen more often than not. I don’t know how that can be argued.

by Mike Rogers on Sep 15, 2009 7:42 PM EDT up reply actions

the cost only matters to the person writing the checks

if it wasn’t infinitely more expensive to the Tigers and their owner, it wasn’t infinitely more expensive.

by Kurt Mensching on Sep 15, 2009 7:42 PM EDT up reply actions

Which is true, but with a team strapped for cash and a first half that didn’t match attendance projections and numerous albatross contracts, shouldn’t they be looking to maximize their on-field performance in the most monetarily efficient way possible?

by Mike Rogers on Sep 15, 2009 7:44 PM EDT up reply actions

well that depends

we’ll never know what goes on with Ilitch and the meeting of his top Tigers executives.

If the owner is OK with not being efficient this year and won’t “punish” next year’s team for it, then it really doesn’t matter.

Constructing the most cost efficient roster is a fun mind game, but not necessarily how it actually works on a team by team basis.

They carry themselves like a big market team, therefore they are one even if they see some losses. It’s up to their owner to cover the red.

by Kurt Mensching on Sep 15, 2009 7:48 PM EDT up reply actions

Just because they carry themselves like a big market team doesn’t mean that is the best way to go about it. I’m not trying to say that “my way” is the best way, because I’m just a 23 year old kid sitting on a laptop at the moment. I just don’t see how someone like Illitch would operate the team like that. Would he operate his pizza chain like that? I doubt it. I know that this is different because he wants to win, but this is, after all, an entertainment business as well.

Saving money by not swapping deck chair for deck chair to serve the same purpose, only getting an older, more expensive one means we have more money to spend on paying off the new car that needs new breaks or buying a nice table for the patio.

I don’t know why I went with a furniture reference.

by Mike Rogers on Sep 15, 2009 7:52 PM EDT up reply actions

Really, who knows what Illitch is thinking

He’s not out to make money off this anymore. He is loaded, he is old, and he wants his damn ring.

by rcpratt on Sep 15, 2009 7:54 PM EDT up reply actions

I guess my point is that I don’t feel that Dave Dombrowskin and company is the right front office to deliver that ring. Player evaluation has evolved and I don’t get the feeling that Dombrowski is, or has, evolved with it.

by Mike Rogers on Sep 15, 2009 7:56 PM EDT up reply actions

Who knows.

But hey, at least he’s not Dayton Moore. Yuniesky Betancourt is clearly really good.

by rcpratt on Sep 15, 2009 7:58 PM EDT up reply actions

This is true. At it’s core, we have a much, much better front office than Kansas City. Let’s rejoice in that!

by Mike Rogers on Sep 15, 2009 7:58 PM EDT up reply actions

Some see it as waste of funds for, fundamentally, the same thing and others see it as a gamble/push that went bad.

The contract situation is troublesome and Washburn basically being dead weight at this point leads me to question why DD made the trade.

I guess the chance that Washburn would stay close to his wondrous numbers was too great to not take and he made his bet.

In the end we’re really no better or substantially worse than when we started save for the injury bug.

The trade didn’t bear the kind of fruit we wanted so it is time to acknowledge and move on. Illitch is concerned more with winning a World Series ring, especially since he is 80 and his window is closing.

by 13194013 on Sep 15, 2009 7:50 PM EDT up reply actions

And this is the exact thought process that I have problems with. Why make that gamble? There were clear signs that he was playing over his head at the time of the deal and a regression was possible (not automatic). So, in the end, what does the trade accomplish?

Trades are made to improve the ball club. There were numerous signals that this trade was not going to improve the ball club significantly.

by Mike Rogers on Sep 15, 2009 7:53 PM EDT up reply actions

I certainly did not like the idea of trading for Washburn.

Playing Devil’s advocate here: I think the price of starters for the stretch run was too high for DD’s liking and the cupboard wasn’t exactly overly stuffed so he took a risk hoping Washburn would somehow keep at his unsustainable level.

DD took a risk, a bad risk, and it didn’t work out. Without more information on what other factors lead to this trade all we can do is wring our hands. Hell, maybe DD made this deal just to do something to placate the fans or maybe to try and get another arm to eat some innings.

I’m baffled at why this trade took place at all as well.

by 13194013 on Sep 15, 2009 7:57 PM EDT up reply actions

I think it was a fair gamble

Otherwise you’ve got Porcello running out of gas at that time. You’ve got rookie French pitching over his head with a small number of major league starts under his belt. And you don’t have a lot of other alternative.

A veteran with playoff experience having a good season, and he doesn’t cost an arm and a leg to trade for?

Take it.

by Kurt Mensching on Sep 15, 2009 7:58 PM EDT up reply actions

Apparently we eat enough Pizza that Illitch isn't worried about $18mil

So I doubt he’s worried about pocket change that this rental cost.

by rcpratt on Sep 15, 2009 7:43 PM EDT up reply actions

It’s not just this year. I doubt Luke French was going to be filling the No. 5 spot in Detroit for years to come, but someone is going to be filling it and likely be more expensive than French will be for the next 3 seasons (before he hits arbitration). Money spent is money spent.

by Mike Rogers on Sep 15, 2009 7:45 PM EDT up reply actions

Again, we don't know

Maybe that someone turns out to be Figaro holding down a spot for a year or two while one of the recent young starters they’ve drafted matures. It’s not like French was the only league-minimum option out there. Maybe next year Nate and Bonderman rebound and round out the rotation at no additional cost.

by Kurt Mensching on Sep 15, 2009 7:52 PM EDT up reply actions

I agree. Figaro can very well come in and pitch even better than a No. 5 starter. Or, he could not be a big-league pitcher at all. Who knows.

by Mike Rogers on Sep 15, 2009 7:55 PM EDT up reply actions

And I didn't argue that he wasn't going to regress.

I think it was worth a shot that he a) wouldn’t regress for his next 7-9 starts, or b) wouldn’t regress so…epicly.

by rcpratt on Sep 15, 2009 7:44 PM EDT up reply actions

I mourn the loss of French puns.

Question about Washburn trade:

Did Seattle have to “sell” the idea of trading Washburn to Detroit, or did Detroit just aproach them with an offer? I’m wondering if D’s FO should be pissed at Seattle’s FO for lying about Washburn’s longevity, or instead, if D’s FO should just pissed at themselves for overestimating said longevity.

by Blueberry_Icecream on Sep 15, 2009 8:36 PM EDT reply actions

Hindsight is 20/20

I didn’t think it was a horrible trade at the time. I don’t think you could predict that Washburn was going to completely go off a cliff like this.

by Mike Rogers on Sep 15, 2009 8:44 PM EDT up reply actions

Oh, no, I didn't mean debate the decision after we've seen the results...

What I meant was, did Seattle do any “convincing” to get Detroit to do this trade, or did Detroit just approach Seattle out of the blue with an offer?
Did Seattle call up Detroit and say we got this awesome pitcher who’ll totally be your post season mvp, and all we want is your so-so rookie and this so-so minor leaguer.
Or did Detroit call up Seattle and say, we want so-so Washburn and we’ll give you future cy youngs French and Robles?

Or did Seattle call up Detroit and plainly say, hey, we’’ll give you washburn for french and robles, waddayasay? Or did Detroit plainly say to seattle, we’ll give you french and robles for washburn, how bout it?

I’m just wondering if any salesmanship was required to complete initiate this trade. thx

Hello

This is a bit late, but is it not considered bad form to swing at a 3-0 pitch when your team is leading 8-1 in the seventh inning?

Also, why is our pitching downright atrocious against the Royals all of a sudden? We looked better against the Yankees, for crying out loud.
