Game 145 Post-Game Afterglow

The BYB office staff made a late decision to attend tonight's ballgame (For Ernie!), so we'll have a full recap later tonight or early tomorrow.  Until then, you can share your post-game thoughts right here.

Eddie Bonine allowed three runs in five innings, and the bullpen was near perfect for the final four as the Tigers picked up a 4-3 win against the pesky Royals, their first in five tries. The magic number is now 13.

What did you think of the ceremony with Ernie Harwell during the third inning?  Were you able to see his speech?  What are your feelings on that?

We'll have more for you later.  Thanks for spending your evening with BYB.

It's pre-season...

No need to boo…

Lions were 4-0 last year in their pre-season… Look how that turned out.

I missed the speech

I can’t wait to see it. I imagine some of you will watch it again?

by actioncuse on Sep 16, 2009 10:08 PM EDT reply actions

I missed it, too

I’ll watch it later. When I have the kleenex handy.

by NCDee on Sep 16, 2009 10:11 PM EDT up reply actions

It's another 4-3 win.

That’s either the 12th or 13th of the season.

Watching the Rangers/A's now

I wonder why Michael “Genital” Wuertz never caught on as a nickname

The Rangers are getting shut out AGAIN?

Isn’t this, like, the fourth game in a row?

Does NOT want Boston to get that Wild Card***

Hoping I can be honest here without getting slammed.

I was kinda looking for a moment in Ernie’s speech that would have a similar effect as Lou Gehrig’s speech. I didn’t see one, which was kinda dissapointing. Although no phrases in here will be remembered by me for a long time, it still was incredibly sad.

I don't have a signature.

You could tell he had what he wanted to say mostly memorized,

but he got nervous or overwhelmed and lost his train of thought. Maybe it was in there and he forgot it.

by StringTheory on Sep 16, 2009 10:17 PM EDT up reply actions

I thought it was heartfelt at least.

Him pumping his arms coming to the mic was the best part for me, I think.

I don't have a signature.

by Kmann on Sep 16, 2009 10:18 PM EDT up reply actions

Definitely seemed like that.

He’s not used to being in the middle of the field while talking to thousands of people.

by explosivo2k2 on Sep 16, 2009 10:19 PM EDT up reply actions

He's never been one for overly emotional speeches.

He’s humble. I think if he had tried to reach deeper into what he was feeling, he (and all of us) would have lost it and gotten maudlin, and I don’t think that’s how he wanted to be remembered. He just wanted to say thank you, and he wanted to do it his way.

If I’m ever in that situation, I hope I have as much grace and class.

by NCDee on Sep 16, 2009 10:21 PM EDT up reply actions

Eh, I like emotional speeches.

Wanted to cry, haha. Don’t really know his speech style, so I wasn’t sure what to expect. What we got was great though…

I hate that too

If they cut the video BEFORE the next question was asked, it wouldn’t be so bad. But once I hear the question, I want to hear the answer.

4.5 games never sounded so good

Now the best the Twinkies can do is close it to 1

Unless the Tigers think, hey, beating KC felt good, let’s do it again tomorrow!

And then start thinking, dude, winning is fun, let’s sweep the Twinkies, and then the lead will be 8 games, and we’re all be going half mad with joy.

Or is that just crazy talk?

Are the Rangers collapsing or are the A's just playing well right now?

After all, they just took two of three from Minnesota.

By the way, be glad you guys don’t have to watch the stupid “Cash Code” commercial all the time.

Rangers lose again

They’ve just been one-hit for the THIRD time this year, this time in a game started by Trevor Cahill. The other two times they’ve been one-hit this year? The starting pitchers were Chad Gaudin and Dontrelle Wilis.

(promise that will be my last pic of the night)

by ChrisDTX on Sep 16, 2009 10:32 PM EDT up reply actions

Believe it or not, he actually one-hit the Rangers this year

His lone shining moment.

FWIW

The Mariners are up 2-0 and One Year Wonder Quentin just GIDP. I’d make a DP joke, but I’m too tired.

Here's a fun stat from Jason Beck's Twitter

Miguel Cabrera now has six stolen bases, which is good enough for fourth on the team.

What a great guy. People were saying that it wasn’t like Lou Gherig’s. IMO that is because Lou was given gifts by everyone. Ernie wouldn’t even take the extra few seconds to walk slowly back into the stadium. I’ve never met him, but I know that he’s probably one of the most generous people in the world. Even tonight all he did was give out thanks, rather than letting us thank him.

Watching a bit of the Seattle-Chicago game before going to bed...

Ryan Rowland-Smith makes a weird hissing noise when he delivers the ball.

(And I’m getting a little tired of the Geico cavemen/gecko expose commercials).

Sore left hip. DJ Carrasco is in and just gave up a solo home run to Mike Carp.

I'm watching the Boston game.

The umpires just gave them a tie in the ninth. Two missed calls end up in a bases loaded walk.

by StringTheory on Sep 16, 2009 11:17 PM EDT reply actions

The Rangers are struggling at the wrong time

Apparently, the Red Sox have decided that they’re never going to lose again ever. The death knell is just about to sound for Texas. Unfortunately.

Well, I'm off to bed

I’ll leave the White Sox-M’s game up in the background. Great win tonight. If Bonine can give the same performance the rest of the way, it would be a big boost.

OT, I got my car back today!!!

The Angels were robbed.

Nick Green should have been out on strikes twice; terrible calls.

ernie is the greatest of all tigers.

Period. Back to the game, we should all remember what lyon did tonight. One of the great performances this year.

cram it hawk

4-1 final. 7 back in the loss column.

by rook34 on Sep 17, 2009 12:24 AM EDT via mobile reply actions

Ernie is great. That must have been hard

Tigers… We don’t have what it takes to make the playoffs. Twins do. Sorry to say but Twins are going to sweep us unless we gain some sense of urgency to win these KC type games.
Unless we get serious, were not going to the post season.
